  • What’s happening in this American Made movie clip?
    Barry Seal (Tom Cruise from Mission Impossible, Top Gun and Rain Man) fills his plane with drugs. But when the traffickers want to add more, he explains to them that it is not possible because otherwise the plane will not be able to bear the weight. With the help of the traffickers, he backs the plane as far as possible on the runway to have as much time as possible for take-off. But before he leaves, they try to get a man to come with him. He must again explain to them that the plane cannot take any additional load. He soars off and nearly crashes into the forest, but he finally manages to take off.

    What’s the American Made movie about?
    In 1978, Barry Seal (Tom Cruise from Mission Impossible, Top Gun and Rain Man), a commercial jet pilot, smuggled Cuban cigars into the United States. He is recruited by the CIA to fly clandestine reconnaissance missions over Central America. During a mission, the Medellín Cartel asks Seal to fly cocaine on his return flights to the United States. Seal accepts and starts sending the cartel's cocaine to Louisiana. The CIA turns a blind eye to the drug trade, but the DEA tracks down Seal. To avoid authorities, Seal and his family must move to a remote town in Arkansas. The small town becomes wealthy and turns out to be the center of cocaine trafficking in the United States. Eventually, the CIA shuts down the program and abandons Seal, who is arrested. He escapes prosecution by making a deal with the White House, which wants evidence that the Sandinistas are drug traffickers. Seal manages to obtain photos that link the Medellin cartel to the Nicaraguan Sandinistas, but the White House publishes them as propaganda against the Sandinistas. Seal being in the pictures, he is arrested and the cartel plots revenge. Seal is found guilty and is sentenced to hours of community service. Finally, unable to hide from the cartel, he is shot dead by assassins. The CIA destroys all evidence linking them to Seal and continues the smuggling, but using Iran instead to deliver weapons to the Contras.

      Overall, this is the most accurate fictional aviation movie I've ever seen. Rather than contriving unbelievable issues that arise with a plane and solving it stupidly, this movie has scenes regarding weight and balance, how to deal with an engine fire, and other things completely accurate to aviation it's so cool to see it done right for the most part.

      tom being a real aviator in real life won't let that happen.

    • @gammaraider
      @gammaraider 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      It's not entirely accurate. At the beginning, doing 90 knots with a nearly flat angle of attack like that, you'd never get a stall warning. That's not how the stall sensor works. Later when he pulls it up hard, maybe, but during the first part it's not accurate.
      The stall sensor is a little flap at the front of the wing, with a switch attached to it. It triggers when air starts "bleeding" up across the front of the wing, instead of flowing under it. That happens only when the angle of your wing in relation to the direction of the airflow is way too steep. IE when you're pulling up too hard or when you're about to land and you're flaring. Can't happen when you're taxying or hovering just over the runway like that at a flat angle.

      @gammaraider 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@Forbes123 Yeah he is changing the prop pitch, not the opening the throttle :D And if anything, that should have decreased the RPM a little (more load), not upped it like the sound suggests.

That the whole reason people sell drugs is usually out of necessity due to a marginalised society that works against minorities and the poorer classes. @@jordancarlson7338 first of all it’s you that are assuming a few things. The first of which is that I believe in God... I don’t , and second is that people in that industry do it to survive. They do it because it’s any easy way to make the most amount of money for the least amount of work. Illegal dugs fuel one of the largest economic sectors in the world. If the entire drug world wasn’t loaded with cash and packed with violence then there wouldn’t be an untold number of tv shows, documentaries, and Hollywood movies on the subject (which not only further fuels the drug industry but also romanticizes it and makes it more acceptable to the general public). The world at large doesn’t like the day to day reality they have to live in and so they look for an escape, be it illegal drugs or alcohol or anything that makes them feel good and helps them forget that life is hard and there’s no easy fix. As I stated I don’t believe in God but I am well versed in religion and the Bible I can’t see God forgiving people who spend their lives intentionally participating in a practice that they know is hurting people and even killing them. As for minorities being marginalized, there’s a quick fix to that. First stop breeding. If you cannot afford to support a child that you will bring into this world after a night of partying and sex,then glove up or go home and rub one out instead. And secondly the power of the people has always resided in the masses. If you can organize and stick together you can accomplish anything.

      Little of this film is true. It's spin and propaganda, _agitprop._ Those wanting to know the real deal about Seal's actions and who his actions served, should read Terry Reed's _Compromised._

    • @k.chriscaldwell4141
      @k.chriscaldwell4141 3 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      @@deerlord2363 It's agitprop, by definition. If the plan had been to make _"a fun lie based on a true story,"_ they would have used a different name for Seal.
      Terry Reed's book and documentation about Seal in his book, _Compromised,_ (And others' revelations of same) was so revealing of the US Tyranny's crimes that an ongoing misinformation , propaganda, campaign has been maintained against Seal-- _American Made_ is agitprop and a part of that misinformation campaign.
      One fact revealed in Reed's book: The US Tyranny was running guns down to Latin America paid for with money gained from running drugs up to America. Part of the proceeds from the drug running were then funneled in to black ops in Latin America and around the world, and political and black ops against America.
      I believe a main goal of this agitprop film was misinforming the American people about what really went on in Mena, Arkansas, and in Arkansas in general, and spin the US Tyranny's gun and drug running on to Seal.
      Read the book. Just the revelations about Clinton and the elder Bush are worth the read.

      In the agitprop, _American Made,_ they show Seal receiving maps to the DEA's investigative hot zones. Hot zones that Seal could avoid so as to enable his evasion of the DEA. In reality, Seal had elements of the US Tyranny and Z(C)IA turning off detection stations, etc. to facilitate his flights in and out of the nation.
      _"What Seal was preparing to do was to "blind" a Department of Defense satellite designed as a sentry to give advance warning of incoming hostile weapons systems. This would provide a window through which the Lear could fly through undetected. At the same time, Seal said, secret military surveillance tracking stations manned by U.S. Army intelligence personnel would emit large bursts of energy to jam the U.S. and Mexican ATC radar. Terry felt he was seeing the results of all the Star Wars countermeasures technology. This, he now realized, was how Seal's Operation Jade Bridge aircraft, code named Dodger, had been able to enter and leave the United States without being detected. If there had ever been a doubt in Terry's mind about who Seal was, and how high he was connected, it had been put to rest forever. Seal got his flight plan authorizations not from someone on the ground, like most pilots, but from satellites out in space."_ p. 244, _Compromised,_ Reed

    I used to fly cargo on a baron. We always fly out heavy and overloaded on a field similar to this with obstructions on both ends of the ''runway''. Our procedure for T/O was FULL throttle and FULL BACKYOKE at clean. Once the A/C build-up speed, Nose wheel starts to leave the ground. The Stall warning horn will squeak from time to time but pay no attention to it as its irrelevant. Once you feel the main landing gear "smoothen", count 2 sec, flaps to first, adjust pitch position to slightly down to gain airspeed. Once Clear of the terrain, and speed is good, retract flaps to zero and you lived that day. I never knew how dangerous that was until I became part of the airlines. I remember watching this in cinemas. I didn't watch the part he flew overload on a short runway. Reminds me of my friend who fell short clearing a high tension wire and sadly didn't make it. this is the first time I am watching this and I can't describe the feeling.

    First of all I would have taken off during the coolest part of the day which would have possibly been the morning when air is at its densest. that's a hot humid environment so you get less air density. second of all I would have held the brakes and hold them until the engines were at maximum rpm or until they started pull free from the brakes. finally I would have given the maximum amount of flaps for that takeoff.
    And I would have made them go and cut down a hundred yards worth of trees or handed the flying job to somebody else.
    apparently they didn't throw the book at Short takeoff procedures for this scene.

      I think it's kind of funny how people talk about how they would've realistically handled this fictional situation when even the movie itself isn't interested in making the scene realistic. Regardless of the takeoff, the extra weight, ANY of that stuff...I guess crashing into the treetops somehow has no effect on the airspeed? Seal BARELY got the plane in the air, then he spends the first 10 seconds of flight shaving the canopy off of the jungle. THE SECOND he made contact with the trees, he would've been dead because his airspeed instantly would've fallen below stall speed and then there would've been a very horrific, very fiery crash in which the jungle got dusted in cocaine.

      @@k.chriscaldwell4141 Unverifiable, even after classified CIA operations of similar nature were declassified. (Air America, etc.) The story kept changing every time he told it, and got bigger and better every time he was in a bar, drunk. Sorry, but its very likely not true. Also, anyone involved with operations like that were utterly silent about their participation. The CIA wasn't known for recruiting blabber mouths.
      The part about the cartels was, though. He really did fly drugs. If he wanted to tell stories that he flew for the CIA to make himself feel better, well, that's on him.

    They could've sent people to cut those trees in front of runway. Plus he could've made kind of breakers with rope for his gears: put these breakers under the gear, pull throttle to full power get on max rpm and then pull out breakers.
    Also make harder runway: if they had enough people and tools they could have covered runway with wood.

    "I'm already 1,500 pounds overweight." Then you're already WAY dead, as the Ted Smith Aerostar 600 with two 290hp Lycoming IO-540-K engines has a max takeoff weight of 5,500 lb (AOPA Pilot, Dec 1986), and 7,000 lb places you 27% over, more than seven percent further into the "IN THE RED - YOU'RE DEAD" zone beyond the roughly 20% factor of safety. Add to that the hot, humid day with a density altitude way above sea level, and all certified and current pilots will say, "Yeah, I know. Can't happen. But it's Hollywood." He's not rotating less than 84 kts, and Vx (best angle of climb airspeed) is 100 kts, so... Then there's the throttle back, then throttle about 30% more forward during the takeoff roll. Yeah... NO. ALL takeoffs -- EVERYWHERE -- are conducted at full throttle, which is never reduced until after gear/flaps are up and you're established in the climb. Also, that much foliage would probably have slowed him down enough to stall and wind up in the jungle. To top it off, he's taking off with a cold engine. Contrary to population misconception, cooler engines DO NOT make more horsepower. Hotter engines make more power. Sure, cooler air and fuel is denser, meaning more of it can fill combustion chambers to make more power, but having a hot engine doesn't heat up the same temperature ambient air very much at all. Once detonated, less energy (heat, in this case) being absorbed by the cold engine cylinders and block means more of it is available to expand the gases of combustion into producing more power i.e. thrust for forward motion. Ergo, hot engines produce more horsepower, which means more RPM and/or blade angle (for variable pitch propellers) and more thrust. They're also far less likely to break when you firewall the throttle than a cold engine. AND THEN -- FINALLY -- he utterly FAILS to compute and pace off and mark proper acceleration and stop distances based on the POH tables and current atmospheric conditions and runway slope as I've had to do while flying around South America. Looking it up only takes a couple of minutes. Failure to look up the data and use it can cost you your entire lifetime. Thus, all pilots are required to look it up. All smart pilots (the vast majority of us) DO look it up and use it. So, unless he barely has enough gas to make his destination (also foolish), he's going to sit at idle waiting for his engines to warm up -- thoroughly -- before advancing throttles to full i.e. 100% power and waiting for the temperatures to either stabilize or reach to just this side of redline before releasing brakes. Cowl flaps take energy, too, so he might shut those before beginning his takeoff roll. One more thing: While flaps reduce your stall speed, they create more drag than anything else, so your takeoff roll is minimized when you accelerate flaps up. That said, a small amount of flaps can and do improve climb angle for some airplanes. If the POH indicates a reduced takeoff roll with obstacle clearance using, say, 5% flaps, but you want to accelerate clean, I've seen pilots set flaps double the percent in seconds before they hit Vr, thus, if Vr is 84 kts, then they'd ensure the flap lever was set to 5% NLT 74 kts. I CANNOT ADVISE THIS. Far better to give yourself a proper, by the book margin of error all around and fly the plane commensurate with the checklist and POH.
