I didn't hear him offer any particular insight. all the other actors gave opinions and thoughtful observation about their characters. No unkindness intended. I thought after the former mrs bates/prison episode they should have left them alone. Her sudden turning to stone after the rape--no way. Rape endless scenario was NOT necessary
It's a shame and an insult to the fans that their loving relationship was ignored in the film. (not even a kiss) Based on what family interaction was shown, it wasn't even worth casting an actor to play their son. I did notice that there were scenes that were cut so hopefully they'll be included when the DVD comes out.

What I love the most is how Anna never hides her attraction to him; from the start, it’s clear how she feels. But because of his past mistakes and his terrible marriage to Vera, Bates doesn’t think himself worthy of her and thus does his best to hide his feelings to the point where we’re not sure at first if he actually loves her as much as she loves him. But then, especially in season 2, with every episode that passes, he opens himself up to her more and more until, during their beautiful wedding night scene, he is glowing with love and happiness which he can finally express.
These two actors are so talented, they just bring the characters to life. As another said, Anna's character is inherently elegant, proving once more that true elegance and 'class' is not tied to money at all. And Bates is like a rock, especially given his background as revealed later.
Bates is by far the sexiest character on the show. The internet goes goo goo over Thomas because he’s a pretty boy. But Bates is a powerful, kind, wise man. Not a bratty little boy.
My favourite scene of Bates and Anna is in prison, after the verdict, when they know he'll be hanged and they speak of "no regret". The moment Bates says the phrase "No man can regret loving as I have loved you" and we see his tears, is the strongest scene for me. And it was played so remarkably well!
The way the two actors play their romance in this show has been so fantastic and fascinating - everyone could believe Anna and Bates have fallen in love for real ... they show a tenderly nearly old fashioned love , a real love , a devotion to each other . They have gone threw so many hard stuff - but at the end their marriage is crowned by the birth of their son . I also love the special role Mary plays here ... she shows a real friendship ... Anna & John Bates are my favourite couple - for sure I love the other couples , too , but these two people are very special ... 🌹💞
That end scene of episode 1 where he stopped the car and told Bates to go back inside... that was the moment I decided to keep watching the show. Until then, I had no reason. Bates and Daisy where my reason to watch the second episode. And then I was hooked.
The first show I saw was when Mary and Mr. Parmuk the Turkish Ambassador were getting it on and he died in her bed! Then Cora and Anna dragged him out of her room undercover. I thought...'hmmm, this is interesting!'
What struck me as I am rewatching the show is they bonded over their shared integrity. It was a union of minds and souls that turned into love. They are the superior straight couple on TV no one even comes close
Ahhh, Bates and Anna have a son! I've only begun watching in the last year, and I am hooked! Anna says, "We have a son, John." First time I recall her not saying "Mr. Bates."
Joanne Froggatt is soooooo gorgeous. I've seen many of her interviews and just can't take my eyes off her. Intelligent and fabulous personality to boot. 😍🥰🤪

How do you feel now? I could argue what happened with them specifically Bates is equally worse. He felt almost unimportant and thrown in there for the sake of being thrown in.
@@RonnieR29 I am glad nothing bad happened to them. That being said, of course I was disappointed when we didn't get fluff and family time. I liked the movie nevertheless. It wasn't meant to be centred around drama and I was well entertained. What I took out of it was, that they are doing well, their son is healthy and that was all I needed to make peace with it.
@@Shenayakita - Exactly, I totally agree. It's impossible to fit a dozen separate, detailed storylines into a 2 or even 3 hour movie and I thought the movie did a great job of giving everyone screen time, despite the fact that obviously certain characters had more screen time than others. The movie was really good and I was thoroughly entertained. I laughed and I cried, especially during the scene with Lady Violet & Mary at the end.
They fell for one another in the most organic way. The sincere sweetness is heartwarming. I have watched these seasons dozens of times. I never tire of it! I came in late in the watching game. At 8:40 as Anna reels and Bates looks on after Lady Mary says 'Isn't she marvelous?' ..... The music stops for Bates and all he can do is look at Anna and smile. That smile says it all, for me.
Honestly, Bates and Anna were the best thing about Downton Abby for me and that’s saying quite a bit. I loved Tom and Sybil, they were wonderful and Mary and Matthew were epic but nothing came close to the magic of Anna and Bates.
I’ve been rewatching this series recently and as usual I was touched by their love story…but I have to say, Joanna Froggatt’s performance stood out the most, even more than the actor who played Mr. Bates. Where a lot of the characterizations on this show can seem kind of forced sometimes, the portrayal of Anna seems so natural. Her acting is unaffected and the character comes across as completely sincere. I’m so glad she won a golden globe for her performance.
Mr.Bates established himself as my downstairs favorite really quick. It's no surprise though, I love Brendan Coyle. From North and South to Larkrise and then to Downton. He is easily one of my favorite British actors.
My favorite scene between Ana and Bates is when he forces her to tell him about her rape. Such a powerful and heartbreaking moment, he was so tender and strong, he made her (almost) whole again.
I couldn't watch that scene, my heart broke when this evil happened to Anna (such a lovely person), and then the fallout … her gut wrenching pain and then the distancing of herself from Bates …. UGH!!!! My eyes tear up just thinking about it. I am so happy things worked out … they had to work out because John Bates and Anna have the truest love of anyone on DA.
Well yes maybe that is it. He does sound cheerier! I suppose Brits can hear subtle differences also which I cannot. I did hear one of the actresses say once that most of them are from the same part of England the story takes place in, so there was not much to change in their accents.
I was just thinking about the scene when they were in Scotland and Anna starts to dance … the way Bates was looking at her … OMG!! … and when Mary says, she is marvelous … and then Bates, looking at Anna with such love, says, "Yes she is Marvelous!!" My eyes tear up every time I watch that scene.
I respected a lot how Bates has never complained of the tricks played by Thomas and O,Brian on him... he didn,t keep grudges or at least not in a devious way, great man... 👍
I remember when Bates and Anna despite the fact they didn't like Thomas actually helped him stay at Downton Abbey when they realised O'Brien was manipulating Jimmy to make sure Thomas was sacked with no reference until Bates said in O'Brien's ear 👂"her ladyship's soap 🧼".

Same! They’re the ones who shine the most in rewatches. Anna & Bates are so adorable and resilient through their difficult times. And Maggie Smith, what can I say, “is this an instrument of communication or torture?”
It sure is. Maggie Smith is such an AMAZING actress and the former Coronation Street actors Robert James - Collier and Joanne Froggatt are really good too. Every actor / actress brings their A game to the show.
I love Mr bates his way of acting is fantastic. He mad me fall in love with him lol. Anna is fantastic actress. I love watching the series over an over again. Can't wait for the new movie new Era to come to Canada.
They had the heaviest plotlines because they’re the two best actors on the show. They can deliver gut-punching emotion like nobody else. And it’s what makes them such a great onscreen couple because they go through hell and back multiple times and emerge from every trial more in love than ever.
Neither of the films are as good as the series. They’re really unnecessary afterthoughts. Except Thomas’ storyline in the second film; after all he went though, he deserved to find true love!
First episode I fell in love with them and I have been with them through every up and the very many downs. Oh my heart. I cannot express just how much I adore them, I can’t wait to just get to see them again on the big screen! Their tender love is everything I want in life.
I love Anna and Bates. The storyline between the two of these characters was amazing. They've gone through so much. I love how they go to great lengths to show their love for one another. P.S. I like Thomas too - that little cheeky sneak! He's an outsider and I suppose that's why he acts the way he does.
I have just discovered Downtown Abby and oh wow! I am ridiculously obsessed.. I want to have my way with Mr. Bates. Lol sorry Anna. I love them. And now I'm upset that there are no more sessions to watch
Bates' stoicism and honest directness got me first, but his wanting equality with all the staff brings me to tears because of the pain he endures. Anna is his angel on earth.
I binge-watched the entire show this summer on Amazon Prime. I specifically remember my first impressions of the show based solely on the first episode were like, “Yeah, it’s _okay,_ but it probably won’t be one of my favorite shows.” The biggest thing that really motivated me to continue was seeing what happened to Bates. Now I’m obsessed.
@@nw7408 I put it on while cleaning the house! Just listening to it makes me happy. Goes to show how good they are, and the writing. Even without looking at the gorgeous sets and clothes, just hearing it while washing the dishes is enough for me!
@@carollund8251 And don't you love the variety of accents.. Upper class English, Scottish (Mrs Hughes & Dr Clarkson), Irish (Bates and Tom)? Love the Scottish broque
I recently re-watched the series in preparation for the movie, and I swear it breaks my heart every time I see Bates so broken and crying in his room when he loses his position, and then I cry some more when Lord Gratham runs up to the car and tells Bates to get out. I boohoo some more.
I started watching this series during the Fall of my junior year of college. I was instantly obsessed! It was the only semester in 4 yrs where my GPA dropped below 4.0. It really is that good!
The relationship between Lord Grantham and Mr Bates is timeless. It had me hooked from the first episode. Then the way Anna starts to fall for him and a love affair begins so sweetly. I loved when they finally kissed and their relationship began. These two are endgame for sure 😍😍😍❤️💕💕💕
I didn't realise Ygritte was in Downton!! I have such a crush on Brendan Coyle! Mr Bates and Anna were perfect together. Anna was a beautiful character, played so well by Joanne Froggatt.
I actually did not want to watch Downton Abbey, but wife insisted that I "give it a try." After I watched a 2nd episode I was completely hooked. I LOVED the romance between Anna & Bates. Probably my favorite 2 characters. Just hearing the theme song always plays on my heartstrings in a way like something else since the theme song from Ken Burns Civil War series. Thanks for posting this video. I really enjoyed it.
I agree. I didn’t want to watch it either. I was hooked from the first episode. I binge watched the first four seasons. Half way through the fifth season, I find out that the sixth season was going to be the last season. I was so mad at myself for not giving it a chance sooner.
Loved Anna & Bates from the start of this wonderful drama series. In fact I was at a Screenwriter's Festival in Cheltenham back in 2009 where I met Julian Fellowes and he told me about the very first episode being filmed as we spoke - and sure enough his mobile kept ringing as the Director had queries he needed to sort out with JF. Annoying interruptions then, but what an amazing success it has become!
I think that other than Cora, Anna is the most elegant and true ladylike person in the entire series. Title or not, she shows class at every moment.
I'll never forget the scene where Bates was crying in his room and Anna heard him. Loved her compassion.
Her emotional intelligence here was outstanding. Instead of barging in, she acted like she was just in the corridor and didn’t know what was happening, letting him keep his pride and comport himself.
I will admit it.. cried like a baby!
And when he brought her a tray when she was sick...I love the compassion they have towards each other~
I love the way Bates always looks at Anna. He absolutely worships her you can see it in his eyes & his sweet smile. 😍
I have a soft spot for men crying, especially tough ones who aren't supposed to show emotion. I fell for him right away.
The Anna and John Bates storyline is one of the things that kept me coming back to Downton. I adore these two together.
Laura Buckles me too. Every. Time.
It *was* what kept me coming back. I could handle every other curveball and pothole and tragic death as long as Mr. Bates & Anna were okay.

Awwww I love them! Through thick and thin Anna and John Bates stick together! It’s amazing! I love it!!❤️❤️❤️❤️
I love this because Anna and Mr. Bates is my favorite downstairs characters on the show. Maggie Smith is my favorite upstairs character.
Same! They’re the ones who shine the most in rewatches. Anna & Bates are so adorable and resilient through their difficult times. And Maggie Smith, what can I say, “is this an instrument of communication or torture?”
Maria Doyle Kennedy who plays Vera did a very good job. The whole series is just filled with fine acting talent.
But when he brings her a tray when Ana is sick..that’s THE BEST
Anna and Mr Bates should have a spinoff show I love their relationship
I think it would be a pity if they keep on at it. I feel that a spinoff is more of an American idea. My opinion only.
Their chemistry was off the chart from the beginning.
Bates is a dream! Anna as well! Such a beautiful wonderful couple!
I never got so angry at writers like I did with the way they treated Bates and Anna. Which shows how good the writing really was.
They had the heaviest plotlines because they’re the two best actors on the show. They can deliver gut-punching emotion like nobody else. And it’s what makes them such a great onscreen couple because they go through hell and back multiple times and emerge from every trial more in love than ever.
I felt like shouting at the TV “stop making Anna cry!” 😢💔
Brilliant actors. I love this show and can't wait for the film.
Only a few more days
Neither of the films are as good as the series. They’re really unnecessary afterthoughts. Except Thomas’ storyline in the second film; after all he went though, he deserved to find true love!
First episode I fell in love with them and I have been with them through every up and the very many downs. Oh my heart. I cannot express just how much I adore them, I can’t wait to just get to see them again on the big screen! Their tender love is everything I want in life.
When Lord Grantham refuses to fire Bates that was the greatest scene for me
I love Anna and Bates. The storyline between the two of these characters was amazing. They've gone through so much. I love how they go to great lengths to show their love for one another. P.S. I like Thomas too - that little cheeky sneak! He's an outsider and I suppose that's why he acts the way he does.
I'm up to about 40 times IN A YEAR! Bates is my absolute favorite! I LOVE Brendan Coyle!!!
Agree, the two characters had chemistry and well played. The storyline was a good one.
Love these two, they have always been my favourite characters right from the beginning 😍
This is the only show I've ever re-watched several times. Love it! can't wait for the movie to come out!
Upper class English, Scottish (Mrs Hughes & Dr Clarkson),
Irish (Bates and Tom)? Love the Scottish broque
@@sandrasharp2934 Music to my ears!
I've lost count of how many times I've binge watched the entire series.
Outstanding acting. Can not wait for the movie
Jim Carter has the perfect voice in his role as Charles Carson.
My Coyle has such a kind face. A fine looking Celtic man.
This is what I was thinking during the show, kind face and kind smile.
I recently re-watched the series in preparation for the movie, and I swear it breaks my heart every time I see Bates so broken and crying in his room when he loses his position, and then I cry some more when Lord Gratham runs up to the car and tells Bates to get out. I boohoo some more.
We love you all...
We do
I started watching this series during the Fall of my junior year of college. I was instantly obsessed! It was the only semester in 4 yrs where my GPA dropped below 4.0.
It really is that good!
This couple were the only ones to make me cry real tears.😄 I would literally be so sad for them like it was real life...
Didn't realise? you know nothing, -John Snow- itsacarolbthing5221
I wish men like John Bates existed in today's world.
He truly was an ( _ex_ ) Officer and a Gentleman.
Sergeant and an gentleman
Not exactly like him. I don’t want be husband to be arrested
They do exist. They're often friend-zoned and told "I don't want to give this a try because I'm not good enough for you"
I am fortunate to be married to a man who is considerate, kind and looks out for me.
@@slcRN1971 you are among the few lucky ones.
This makes me want to rewatch the whole series!!! I feel like I watched this so long ago!!!
Lillian, go ahead and re-watch the series. I just finished re-watching in preparation for the movie, and I still love it!!!
