    Man, my grandparents kept a freezer full of bass filets in the 80s and early 90s. I had no idea people didn't eat bass lol. I just started fishing as an adult this past year. Largemouth bass are my favorite freshwater fish to eat! Big bluegills are second and crappie are 3rd. There's nothing wrong with taking out 1-2 pounders to eat. It actually helps the bass population to eat some here and there. Ponds and lakes get stunted when you catch and release every bass

    • @stephenmartinez1
      @stephenmartinez1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Amen to that! All the freshwater pan fish like bass, blue gill and crappie taste very similar. There’s so many lakes and freshwater fish in the US, that keeping a few here and there certainly doesn’t harm the population. Especially if you fish in some of the remote lakes. Growing up camping in northern Michigan, my family kept all the fish we caught because a communal fish fry is just part of the camping experience.

      @Cash-pd6di 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@twraoylnledyou8511 usually over 2 pounds people throw them back so they can get healthier and bigger and the reason people eat 2 pounds is because some fishing spots are over populated with 1-2 pounders and 9 times out of 10 the little fish will bite before the big ones

    The way my family cooked bass and other pan fish growing up; we did not filet them. Mostly because the bulk of the fish for our communal family meal were smaller pan fish like blue gill, crappie. We’d remove the scales, head, and guts, and fry them as is, with the bones all still there. We’d just eat around the bones, and pick them out of the meat and out of our mouths while we ate .

    I’ve eaten all types of Bass on river and lake shores over the years. They taste good. I almost never went fishing for them to eat. Seems like we’d catch a mess of Bluegill and need a couple small Bass to round out the dinner. The people that freak out over eating Bass are the tournament fishermen. "Only 1 bait" for year round bass fishing? Hhhmm, that's a tough one. I believe I would have to pick the ole tried & true plastic worm, because you can fish it SO many different ways year round. Fish it fast weightless & twitch it like a soft jerk bait on the surface, add a little weight & fish it the same way just under the surface.........fish it like a slower swimming worm, or any number of ways on or near the bottom. You can even pitch & flip the shorter worms on a typical flipping rig with a pegged heavy weight. Find the type of retrieve & presentation the fish want. PLUS, IT'S TOTALLY WEEDLESS. I can't think of any other lure that you can fish so many different ways as the old plastic worm. So many sizes, styles, and colors to choose from as well. I love & use all lures as much as anybody.......I always keep 8 different lures rigged on 8 different reels & rods at all times........but forced to use only one year round? Yeah.......the plastic worm......definitely.

    I love fishing with soft plastics and jerk baits but if I had to choose here in Covington Louisiana a pumpkin chartreuse salamander is my #1 got to. You can pitch it flip it throw it at a bank and just make it swim on the surface I just love how it looks and feels.

    Bass is delicious... That Danco net is a game changer. Fishing out of a canoe or kayak it would be awesome. Put it on a long lanyard so if you needed you could just drop it and not worry.

    Go Bluegabe! I think that it's usually half and half to bass because bass eat everything and sometimes they have worms, but if the bass are in fresh and clean water, they are usually very good to eat. Steamed black bass with soy sauce, ginger, and green onions is what I used to eat.

    The one “go to” bait would be a shad swim bait. Many colors; but the blue gill is hands down bass candy.

    Cooking in cast iron is an art in itself. First, you have to season it properly and then you need to know how to bring the vessel up to temp and then know how to regulate that temp for the type of food you are cooking. I haven't seasoned my vessels in at least six months (and I use them a lot).
    Cook with the cast iron to your heart's content then let it cool down and when you are all done scrape any stickins off and then rinse with warm water and a Chore Boy or a Chain Mail scrubber for stubborn spots. Dry well and lightly oil if you live in a humid climate, otherwise just thoroughly dry and store until the next use.
