So many similarities to my mom's story. She came to Denmark 32 or 33 years ago and is also from Nakhon Phanom. She tried not to get too involved with other thai people in order to get better at danish. While studying she had me and my five brothers and she's now an intensive care nurse :D Anyway great story. Might visit the restaurant some day!

Sounds like my Thai wife. We first lived in Bangkok 5 years together before moving to Sweden 29 years ago. I want to retire in Thailand but she will never move back there. We visit relatives in ChiangRai once or twice per year. That’s enough she says!? She also has her own business that pays for a comfortable life here. She also refere to the lack of openness in Thailand as the main reason. And we have two grown up sons that have good lives here. Both of them are dual citizens and spent a few years in Thailand to explore the possibilities there, both opted to stay in Sweden

Funny enough, I am living within a few minutes walk from her restaurant. Even thought, it was a new place. Now learning, that it has been there for 16-17 years. I am ashamed to say, that I never been there. Even lived in the neighborhood for five years. But I am definitely visiting it in the near future.

Would have loved to but unfortunately I won’t be getting to Iceland on this particular trip!
My Thai mother is the opposite. She wants to return to Thailand after nearly 30 years, but then again we live in Canada which has become kind of an awful place to live (increased prices everywhere, competitive housing and jobs, and crimes have also been worsening).
And drugs in Vancouver. Zombie city.
Denmark has also become and awful place to live.
Thats why there are so many who moves from denmark..
Thailand is a great place to live if you have money.

Brilliant Interview!. I m from North eastern Thailand like her. I feel the same way as i don't feel I can fit in with Thai ways of thinking and culture anymore. You cant say something, you are forced to say only nice things in particular topics, to particular group of people, you have to be a people pleaser even you think differently deep inside you.
If you don't, your life won't go far. Very happy living in Australia atm, more open-minded society. Of course not everyone is open-minded or good like everywhere else in the world but it doesn't affect me at all as i choose not to worry about them, just focus on good people and your own positivity. I find that Many people here are taking things for granted because they don't grow up in a disadvantaged background in country like Thailand where the struggle is a lot harsher. For me, Australia is the land of opportunities, you just need to work hard , be smart on how you live and spend, show your capabilities, skills, good ethic, honesty to people who you work for and work with. Then, opportunities will arise . You definitely can move up your social status easier than living in Thailand. Social structure is fairer and a lot less corruptions. Nowhere is perfect either Australia or Thailand. Life is short and you choose to live where you can fit in and enjoy your lifestyle the most. Thailand also has many good things and i may go back to live in Thailand again to fullfill my responsibilities in the future but for now i love where I live. 😊

I'm half Thai half Danish, 18 years old, born and raised in denmark, and my dream is to move to Thailand! I'll be travelling to Thailand ALONE (I've never travelled anywhere alone before!), in about a month, for 6 months. To see if I actually like being there for a long period of time or not. I'm so nervous, but I'm sure It'll be fine.
But to be honest, I do wonder how my mum feels... Since she did move here to Denmark, just for her kid to want to move to her home country.
My mum was born in lop buri, but my whole family lives in khrungthep, so Ill be going to khrungthep kha
If you never lived abroad you might quickly learn that living in places like Thailand might not be the dream you make it into, I lived in SEA and everything is more a challenge there due to infrastructure among other reasons, also some of the things and products we take for granted either isn’t there or are hard and often more expensive there.
@ completely valid, but so far it’s going great. Getting a job soon. ☺️ keep in mind I’ve been to Thailand like 21 times, and I have a lot of relatives over here. 🥹 and I do speak Thai so I haven’t had a problem yet.
@@Lisanont There is a huge difference between staying, visiting and living there. Once you start needing to go to/from work every day, do shopping and other daily tasks your perspective changes, what becomes interesting in a visit can turn into an annoyance once you have to deal with it every single day for months or even years … for some visit a country SEA traffic is mostly interesting might even be fun for a change, but once you have to show up at given hours those traffic issues might suddenly become one of the big issues and complaints, shopping isn’t as straightforward either anymore as in Europe either. I love and still adore the region and go there every year… but I came to realisation having the less challenges in my daily life should not be underestimated. If SEA had our infrastructure etc. I would have stayed there. Several who moved from there to here actually said the easiness of daily life is what made them stay in europe… the fact you can easily walk, bike have reliable public transportation not being stuck hours in traffic Is worth more then you think especially once you reach a certain age
@ well that’s how we’re two different people. I’ve been suffering with depression for a very long time, I feel so lonely whenever I’m in Denmark I have nothing to do there. Everyone I know and love lives here so I will stay. You might be right, but as for now I’m pretty confident in myself and my decision. My mom has already bought a condo. Planning to move here when she’s done paying for it, moving with me, of course.

I have lived half my life here in Thailand....however, I have never met a Thai living in the west that wants to return to thailand to live.
It is different. You are granted with the right for freedom of speech the day you were born. While Thai people have to be careful of what they say in public, until they secure citizenship in a western country. Thai culture, like many Asian cultures, is authoritarian.

Because usually poor people became immigrants, of course in Denmark they have more opportunities.
@@maximb7225 Yes, that's exactly the main reason for most Thai immigrants in western countries. Even if the taxes are high, they would likely find it more convenient and organized along with better quality of life than their homeland
I have only ever met one Thai who wants to remain in the western world, all the rest will return home !!

What a lovely lady she is, really inspiring! My wife has been living with me in England for just under 5 months now and she’s slowly starting to adapt to our way of life over here and is loving it.. regarding the politics subject she mentioned comparing between Europe and Thailand she’s right but since our new government came into power, we aren’t allowed an opinion here if it doesn’t fit their agenda otherwise we end up in prison but I’ll leave that one there.. lol, another great video paddy and once again an inspiring lady that my wife can look up to! I first visited Koh Samet about 40 years ago, and it was a truly beautiful little island. I was one of the very few farang there, amongst many students from Krung Thep. I got to know the old lady who was "gifted" some of the island many years before, by her fabulously wealthy lover! (Like Ranee, my wife was also from a rural Isaan family).
love these. great questions. ranee’s suggestion to learn the language is so spot on. i knew a thai lady that lived in los angeles for 9 years and didn’t speak a lick of english. stayed in her thai enclave. must have been stressful to navigate through life.

Just a thought but when you're interviewing folk it may be good if they provide their Thai answers just a little slower than the breakneck speed answers are sometimes provided.

This is what lot of Thais have been saying for years that once they are gone they are gone forever from Thailand. I wonder why her perspective is very shocking to most westerners who moved to Thailand and found that Thai people have been calling Thailand hell on earth or purgatory.
I suppose as a westerner with a means to live with the best Thailand has to offer gives us a unreal perspective, for Thais grinding away every day for a few hundred baht just to barely make ends meet must feel like hell.
She couldnt make it with her own ability unfortunately. It’s quite common and they are just the lucky ones.
I'm a Danish American married to a Thai woman and living in southern California. When it gets below 78F (25C), she can barely stand it. I honestly think she would die in Denmark!
I would think that you would get used to it. But then I think about when I have been in VN in 40+ C°. 😅
Even DK can be too hot, imo. I prefer the winter, and can walk outside in shorts and t-shirt in -10C° without it bothering me. 🙂
The cold is generally not a problem at all for thais because you can buy warm clothes and go outside : (constant) rain day in day out like in Belgium or UK is what thais really dislike, especially cycling in the rain as you cannot hold an umbrella.

If she backs to Thailand, she has to start from scratch again, while living in Denmark after paying huge tax all of her life, she can enjoy retirement benefit while earning more money from her restaurant.
What she's also saying is Thailand is a wonderful place for people who want to start a small restaurant because there's so little paperwork you just start your business and in that way I think the Thailand government is wonderful

If I was a single mom like her,. I would decide to leave abroad as well. Living in Bangkok I don't have my last security when I'm getting older. I do not look for new love. I only wish I could work part-time abroad and return back to live in Thailand some part of the year. That will be my dream. I love to travel and explore🎉

Usually after 4 years living and working abroad you would already able to a acclimatise with the local environment, create bonds with people around you while at the same time detaching urself from your homeland. Her case is not unusual.

Any good advice on how to teach Thai's to speak better Danish..? 32 years and still not fluent in Danish..? And she is not alone.. so don't take it personal.. i'm just curious why this is..I have met around 30 men and women from Tailand and none of them were able to speak proper Danish..even if they have been in Denmark for several years. Anyone who might have an explanation to this..? And yes.. she is indeed an inspiration and amazing woman... I promiss to visit you restaurant Ranee.. :-)
There are diffrent factors, some of them are:
Social circle: Even for Thais who are married to Danes, it is nice to be with other thais, so they can express themselves fully, without having to explain or repeat themselves. Also after a certain age you have all the friends you need, and don't put in much energy in finding others. Danes can be tricky to befriend if you don't know the cultural gateways, and at some point some people just stop trying.
Low language requirement jobs: Some thais in Denmark work within physical labour where there are little demand for them to learn advanced or corporate danish.
Content with very little: Some Thais come from poor backgrounds with a lot of hardship and generational trauma. Having the minimum of comforts that Danish welfare can provide is enough for them, so they have minimal interest in improving their danish to climb the corporate ladder or improve their future prospects.
Different learning aptitude: While basic and higher education is the norm in Denmark, that is not the case in Thailand, some of the Thais who come to Denmark through either marriage or work visa, don't necessarily have any academic or basic schooling, which can make learning a new language with a completely different logic from thai extra difficult, and without proper mentorship and encouragement they simply fall through.
They are here because of necessity or for practical reasons: Some Thais come to Denmark through a partner or a spouse, and while there is love for their partner, that doesn't necessarily mean that they have a love for Denmark, meaning a bare minimum effort can be expected, and if you add the other factor I mentioned, there really isn't any incentive to improve.

The problem with Thai and Philipine girls is that they do not wish to become part of her new family but still feel she need to help her old family. This may place a heavy burdan on her marrige. Many girls only get married because they wish to support the old family and get a citicensship . It is understandable but will in most cases rouin the new marrage and create misery only

My girlfriends' relatives, including her brother and his kids and a few of her aunties/cousins live in Denmark, Switzerland and Norway.
These are the countries that seem appropriate for Thai people to move into and build their life. Rich countries, LOL.

It was a good interview but let's be honest, if she hadn't met and relied on a Danish man to marry and move her she wouldn't be where she is today.
Immigration legally to any western country is difficult for most people; marriage is the quickest.
No kidding, just 4 billions more to go.
