I took a special needs friend to the midland, TX airshow, back in 03-04.. B-1 flew in from the rear of the crowd, hit afterburner and climbed scarring the shit outta everyone.. but Jason who was very hearing impaired , felt the massive rumble; and got SO damn happy. Instantly falling in love with the aircraft. He never forgot that plane.
He used Lancer for his spartan name in Halo 2 and I Was aircorba lol

I saw either an F-15 or F-18, seems he got lit up by something and sped out of the area popping off flares, then one of these bad boys buzzed us SUPER low.....OMG. I was an intern with Rockwell in the logistics group for the B1-B for 3 summers. Logistics was a bit of a mess, but me and my fellow interns worked over several weekends with a General, and a few Corporals to scrub the data. We had the opportunity to visit Edwards AFB where we got a walk trough of a striped B1-B. These were the four prototypes that were referred to in the video. Two were active, and two were cannibals. The active planes were cordoned off with armed guards surrounding them. It was pretty cool.

    Early 2000's
I will never forget the BIB flying out of McConnell AFB. I was in the Commissary parking lot and heard an eerie ominous sound as a plane taxied to the end of the runway. When the unmarked B1B took off people were stopping in the streets and running out of the buildings everywhere. This was at the time a Bone base. The force and loudness was something that caught everyone's attention and made them wonder what it was. Bones have a common "set off the car alarm", Rock The Planet" kind of take off. You get use to it. The force behind this plane even, on the taxi was something no one ever experienced. It was absolutely awesome. This would have been around 1995. The entire short track it took back around was a sound I wont forget. To put it in context. When the Concord Landed taxied and took of from Wichita years later it was somewhat quieter and much more refined than this plane. When the Bone landed that day it went straight back to the Boeing hangers. I will assume the Bone has been tested beyond the limits of the structural limits at speed. I only believe this because of the sound of the engines and the speed and force of the take off of this one experience. I will assume Mach 3 plus has been achieved but modifying the air frame to sustain these speed was cost prohibitive.

I was fortunate to have a career in aircraft (B-1 104 total) development , flight test, manufacturing , record setting runs, upgrade to conventional configuration. The complexity of integration , test and delivery was due to development of an aircraft designed in the period of time represented by 100 % fly-by wire (digital domain) of the f-16 and the mechanical / analog of the F-15. Time marches on and there are upgrades that in the cockpit along with the integration of new sensors . To stand next to it during engine run-ups and full blow test and feel the organs in your chest vibrate is an amazing experience -to see and hear it break the speed of sound 200 meters of the deck... -

So at one point the B1 was this super secret item- before its present iteration. Then peeps decided it was costing too much and the project was shelved. My buddy in the UK was a super airplane nerd and, with a friend embarked on a tour of the US to find as many wrecks etc abandoned in back yards, woods, and deserts. One day they were on a backroad somewhere and he spots something big painted zinc chromate in a hanger in the near distance. He cons his way onto a poorly guarded airfield and persuades guards to allow him to look in the hanger. I remember unkempt grass in front of the hanger and woodland behind it- the back of nowhere. Crammed in the hanger, 2 fully assembled and abandoned B1s or whatever they were originally called, covered in dust and bird poop. He took pictures of the planes, snuck in and took pictures inside of them, left, went back to the UK, forgot about them. He tells the tale and shows me the pictures many years later, neither of us knowing B1s had become a thing again. The B1 pictures weren’t even the first ones he showed me because he had forgotten about them. He had no idea he had pictures of an airplane that had become top secret again. He’s dead now, 1990s, I have no idea where his piccies could be or if they still exist along with the thousands of other photos he took of other planes. I heard the family got rid of everything he had. The pictures where good for the camera tech at that time given an unlit hanger (except for a permanently open door) and unlit plane interior. We looked at the pictures one day when I went and got him because a pair of B52s had landed at the nearby aerodrome in one of the thickest fogs I had ever seen. They also snuck out again before the fog dispersed and we missed them.

Bruce, I've always wondered what that word (obsolete) means. Obsolete to who? Maybe mainly to us but I'll bet that the Iranis or even the Russians would snap those B1s up in a Georgia heartbeat ... obsolete or not. It might not be up to speed with the B2 Spirit, but I believe it would perform at least as well as a B52 ... maybe. I sure don't know for certain but when comparing the B1 and the B52, the stats discussed in this documentary indicated that they were very similar, except for bomb load capacity. I just wonder if this "obsolete" talk is propaganda ... albeit negative in nature. Maybe. I surely don't know for a fact. Many of these so called "documentaries" are loaded down with BS.
