If you look at a real feather, you can see the sort of "spine" of the feather. So seeing the wires seems 100% on par with realistic feathers (both cake 1 & 3). But 3 was the only one who truly followed the prompt. 1. was gravity defying but not a gravity defying CAKE. 2 was confused. that's a 3d cake. and 3. followed the prompt beautifully.
I don't think the second one is a gravity defying cake and I was SO disappointed when I heard the horse in the first one was NOT a cake... The third one though, despite the wires, was my absolute favorite
Yeah, the horse is essentially just an elaborate cake topper. It’s much much easier to stabilize a styrofoam sculpture covered in icing than an actual cake sculpture. The second cake probably required more careful structuring than the first one, even if it looks less impressive.
The third was the one that got the assignment. Even with the wiring it was a clear winner. I'm also really impressed they stuck with the white. So many cakes are a clashing mess .
I feel like the gravity defying cake challenge needs to be done again, except give each bakery a photo of what you want and see who can best recreate it. Kind of like when you did that with your crayon box cake.
I LOVE that peacock cake! I wouldn't be too bothered by seeing the wire slightly through the middle, since natural white feathers also tend to have a darker spine. It's stunning. I do think maybe a slight luster dusting with some of the gold already used in the design anyway would have made it even more dynamic. The pegasus is also gorgeous! And you get so much cake for your money, so I definitely think, based on bang for your buck, the pegasus definitely takes the cake. But for me, the peacockk wins. The character is cute, but def not gravity defying.
The peacock cake was clearly the best for the request. The horse one wasn’t even cake in the gravity defying section! Immediate disqualification for the category in my opinion.
Was it peacock? I thought phoenix. Doing gradient to give feathers texture wouldve elevated it but no complaints. I was so glad she changed her mind at the end.
I was almost legitimately angry when I heard you say the pegasus cake was your favorite but glad you came to your senses after 24 hours..lol. The third cake was the clear winner all around. It was breathtaking and awe-inspiring that the gravity defying part was actually cake. That cake artist is truly skilled and understood the assignment.
That was a lot of cake on two little legs for the owl cake. I’d call it gravity defying more than the Pegasus since the gravity defying part wasn’t cake. The owl cake was huge.
The second one was definitely not gravity-defying in the sense that we think of it but it is for sure worth the $600 or more. Remember the grocery store cake you made into a two-tier wedding cake and a baker told you they would charge $500 for that?? This character cake has SO MUCH MORE detail and would take at least double the time. Don't you think?
in that video I dont think she actually called a bakery for a quote, she cut the call out and just recorded her talking and a black screen. if she was really telling the truth i think she would put the bakery on speaker so that the viewers can actually hear the bakery saying it was worth that much. i think she was just saying that for clickbait lol. ive been thinking this exactly when watching all of her videos, how does her plain "500 dollar" wedding cake she made equal the same worth of that owl cake this baker made for $500.
For the second cake, just wanted to point out, in many places, especially in Asia, people use umbrellas during summers to shield themselves from the sun as they’re walking. Since she has an ice cream in her hand, isn’t wearing gum boots and there are all those summer flowers, I’m assuming it could be a summer time cake instead of rainy season cake.. just my thoughts
All 3 are wonderful. The Animal little girl cake truly is adorable, and it she doesn’t meet the criteria. More as you say, a 3D character cake. Gravity defying should have an element hovering above the cake. And I totally concur with flying bird cake. Love that it was monochromatic. Had they dusted/coloured the feather structure, say silver or gold, that would have hidden the wires and given depth and more interest to the overall cake.
@@TheIcingArtist Yah the owl was a bit disappointing wasn’t it. I *LOVED* the Phoenix cake's design, but the lack of colour let it down a bit I felt. I would have like to see a bit of colour in the feathers. But other than that it was very good.

The one on the left, the head facing backwards made it almost invisible and the way the feathers curled it just reminded me of a hint mound of toilet paper. And the horse one. Oh dear. @@Puglover130 i mean it can be a gravity defying cake and a 3D cake so she shouldn’t have had to correct the baker about anything if she was already explicitly told the main feature was to be gravity defying. the last cake (the phoenix) was both 3D and gravity defying. so its totally reasonable for them to be talking about 3D cakes without any red flags going up that the bakery doesn’t understand what they’re supposed to do.
I think the umbrella in the 2nd cake is a parasol. That’s why the character isn’t wet & would explain the ice cream. All beautiful cakes, the 3rd one is stunning!
Best series! Can we also say a big thank you to Kevin for driving all these cakes home! I've to traveled with a few wedding cakes to venues and that's stressful! 🥰
JUST ONCE I want to see deconstruction on some of these wild crazy cakes. I think how they're put together and able to withstand is way cooler than how they taste, the detail, etc. Also think the bird (swan? Phoenix? White peacock?) was stunning. Way cooler than the other two
At first I thought the girl was also more 3D than gravity defying but if you consider how big her body is to how thin and small her legs are, I kind of buy it a little as gravity defying. I think the concept is just spring. Spring showers, playing outside, eating ice cream. I totally expected a valentines or galentines cake challenge. Maybe next year?
The peacock cake is absolutely stunning. I wish they had airbrushed it into a phoenix to make it just a bit more magical. Only my opinion, but a little coloring, such as a red-orange ombre or fire theme, might have made it really stand out while also hiding or distracting from some of the wiring more. Still absolutely loved it!!
I would LOVE to see a cryptid cake-off! Also 90s/early 2000s cartoons like powerpuff girls, sailor moon, courage the cowardly dog, etc....and a dragon cake-off would be amazing.

i guess in the future when you want to make sure these bakeries stick to their specialty, you have to tell them. like specifically say to the high-end wedding cake shop "give me a gravity-defying *wedding* cake."
The owl cake was so adorable. And I couldn’t help but think it’s cute and funny that the umbrella is technically not big enough to cover her head but more like cover her ice cream. Lol
How to Cook That's Anne Reardon does an excellent tutorial on gravity defying cakes. She had a kettle corn cake and a gingerbread house from Up! That looked amazing.
The third one is my favourite!! It looks the best, it is so elegant, and I really like that the gravity defying part is the actual cake. I was a bit disappointed the pegasus in the first one was not the cake itself
I’m glad you changed your mind on which was your favorite because I thought about exactly what you said. In the bird cake the cake was actually defying gravity. That had to be a challenge for the bakery and she nailed it! But all three were very beautiful. Even though the penguin wasn’t gravity defying exactly it was totally amazing. I’d say yes it’s still worth $600 even though it’s not defying gravity. Those rosy cheeks and pigtails are so precious!
I have made A LOT of cakes, but I can’t even begin to imagine how much work and structure these cakes took. These are amazing. The beautiful bird (peacock?) is absolutely incredible. 💕
The cakes are beautiful. But, for $600 (each) I would expect these cakes to feed more people; especially the last one. There should have been a base cake. How to cut the last two seems to be a puzzlement. 🤷🏼♀️
thats because your more so paying for the artistry that goes into the cake and less for the actual cake itself. if you just wanted to buy a simple sheet cake youd get tremendously more cake for way less money because it would be alot less time/work/skill going into that. cakes like these are more like paying for edible art and art is expensive. i personally agree that i would never pay $600 for such little cake but thats just because i cant fathom paying so much money for art thats gonna get eaten vs art id keep forever. not saying these cakes arent worth that much money, just saying to me personally its not worth it to spend my money on one.
The white Peacock cake was truly amazing!!!!! 😍😍😍😍 It was a beautiful, elegant design. The artistry was a million times better than anything else. It looked like it should have been very, very expensive. ❤️
I’m really curious as to what the gravity defying element was made of in the first cake! My best guess is that it was probably styrofoam to stay that well assembled and able to bounce, but I can think of several other things that would’ve worked too!
Omg! That last cake is genuinely one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen! I’m single as a Pringle and over here wanting that for my future wedding!! 😍😍
it would have been so interesting to see how these cakes where made, what did hold them up, what was all cake. But woooow those were absolutly beautiful
Amazing as always! Would love to see bakeries make cakes of your dog! And also a budget wedding cake! See who can do the most for a very small budget! Thanks for sharing! 💕
I feel like the reason they were all still standing after 24 hours, is that the bakeries knew the cakes were high risk, and made extra sure they would keep standing, while with some of the other 3D cakes, they might have underestimated how much structure the cake would need.
I really like the phoenix cake...my jaw literally dropped. It is amazing! I wished it was more phoenix-ie colors...like reds, blues, golds, etc. But still crazy amazing.
I think that was the only thing missing from this masterpiece. The white is epic, but more color would have definitely helped the details pop and the white also doesn't show up on camera as well.
I was thinking the same thing. It would have been even more amazing with fiery red feathers and gold accents. I think it would have helped disguise the wires running through the feathers too.
I think a cool idea could be where you give the bakeries a real life object such as Sour path kids or even a TV! They all try to recreate it the most realistic as possible and in the end you vote which ones the best. :) Love your videos! You give a lot of helpful tips that continue to improve my baking skills!!!!
*The last cake which was the big white majestic bird IS BY FAR the best cake I've ever seen on this channel oml imagine showing up to an event and seeing that cake* 🥵❤️
As a cake decorator myself i think the cakes is totally worth the prize. Doing anything close to the cake would in total take me 30 + hours to complete which would pay me about 20 dollars per hours and that is without the cost of the materials, that I would imagine to be very costly. So if you consider that, the cakes are actually not overpriced at all!
I’d like to see a mash up cake challenge. For instance, my youngest graduated high school on my 50th bday. Typically we order an elaborate multi tiered cake for graduation (party) that incorporates all the special sport, hobby, school themes/colors and shows off what college they’re heading to & what they’re studying. So it’s ultimately over the top personal to the grad. But since a 50th bday (especially mom’s), and it signals the beginning of empty nest life... both should be celebrated in one mash up epic cake (as an example).
Love all of the cakes! They all are unique and I think whoever made one of them did an incredible job! I also think the last one totally fits the topic perfectly! Love your vids Laurie! 😊
I love you and the cakes YOU make!! You make cakes so much better than any of the cakes I’ve ever seen you had made! These were a bit disappointing for $600!!
3. Penguin girl - Not a gravity defying cake 2. Horse - Not a gravity defying cake. Just a cake with a styrofoam topper 1. Swan - Finally someone actually meets the criteria. Great detail and the actual cake is gravity defying!
I really enjoy your channel. Just wanted to let you know the Owl is holding a Parasol rather than an umbrella. One is to keep rain off the other is to keep sun off.
I feel like for the second one the theme could have been the fact that it’s summer time however it’s really hot outside which could explain the cheeks and also for the umbrella some people do use umbrellas in the summer time to avoid the sun beaming on them. IDK just my assumption😁😂
The one with the pegasus would have "won" for me, but that baker cheated, IMO. The only "gravity defying" part was just a really cool topper. The owl may not be super impressive from a gravity standpoint, but I would expect to pay $500+ for it in my area. The last cake is really impressive, but I agree that the black wires really detract from the "wonder/mystery" of a gravity defying cake...they could have also dusted more of the feathers in the gold just to give them a bit more dimension and define them a bit more because looking at it from far away, the feathers kind of look like scruffy fur. They are all better than I could do, though, so good for them! :)
I love your 3 bakery challenges. You always pick quality bakeries and pay them well enough that they can achieve something great. You legitimately want to see awesome cakes and don’t want to set bakeries up to fail just for clicks.
My favorite of all the Icing Artist videos! which amazes me because normally I like seeing you decorate far more than the "paid bakery contest" videos. As to the question, were they all worth $600? They weren't all equal... Whatever is fair for the Phoenix and Pegasus, the umbrella chick should be about 10-12% less. But I'm using "artistic impact" for that. Cost/Value per serving would have a very different result.
The 3rd is amazing! I would really like to know what’s all edible on each piece? Maybe I missed it but I was expecting all of it If not most of it to be edible! Maybe that’s just me? Obviously the support can’t be cake when it’s gravity defying! The owl/ umbrella one was kind of gravity defying but definitely agree it’s more 3D! This is all coming from my extensive “research” watching bakery videos! 😂 Love you Laurie glad your feeling better and are able to record!!
I agree! I would love to see all the different edible pieces. Especially with the first cake - I want to know how it is supported and what it is made of!
Amazing work on all of them! The owl cake was lovely and just having the two legs for support is certainly impressive, but it just doesn't have much impact. The white bird has got to be my favourite. I personally think the white colour with gold highlights looks amazing, although perhaps a little more gold to hide those wires. The pegasus was amazing too of course, and the detailing on the scenery was amazing, though I wonder what the pegasus itself was made of? Styrofoam?
Totally agree that the last one is #1 because they actually went gravity defying with the actual cake. The horse one is a good 2nd. The other one definitely kinda disappointed that it was not gravity defying and the fact they used such a basic flavor made it worse. Wish I could be there with you to help you try those cakes 😋
Hey Laurie loving this series and I love that you love doing these videos although I do really miss your decerating cakes videos, lots of love to you Archie and Kevin ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
WOW! It is mind blowing to see the creations bakers put so much effort into! I think it it would be great to see you have a tutorial for covering a cake in fondant. (The fondant base.) Thanks and I love your videos!
Here is my opinion: 1) The first one was amazing. Briliantly detailed and overall show stopping. However, it wasn't exactly a gravity defying cake. One of the reasons gravity-defying cakes are so hard to make is because cake is very heavy, so it needs a well thought-out support structure, but if the gravity-defying part is not even cake, I don't think it should count. 2) It wasn't gravity-defying at all. It was beautiful and an amazing 3-D cake, but that's it. I think the umbrella part was supposed to be 'gravity-defying', but is it truly defying gravity if there is an entire human structure holding it up? 3) Now this was what I like to call gravity-defying. I personally didn't mind the wires, as it kind of brought a realistic feel to it. Birds have quite dark spine structure which is usually visible through feathers. Kind of like veins on our wrists. In front of the pegasus, I get how it can look a bit bland, and perhaps it would have been much better if they had coloured it red-orange to make it look like a phoenix but even now, it is so beautiful and the intricate designs are just brilliant.
Honestly if they charge thousands for plain wedding cakes....idk how they aren't charging thousands for this stuff. Cake artists don't get paid even close to enough.
I don't think the criticism of "oh I can see the wire, I know where the pipe is that holds it up" is warranted. There is absolutely no way to make that cake without those things. None. I often make gravity defying objects and I 'm sorry but there is no universe where there isn't some wire or pipe under it. Furthermore, it's a tiny bit unfair that you say "oh I could never do this kind of thing" but then proceed to say "well I dont'want to see the wire and this and this" which is a tad unfair. In other videos it wasn't that harsh, but here it feels a bit unnecessary.
I’m curious where the leftovers of the cakes go? Do you guys eat all of them, do you give them to your neighbors and relatives and friends, do you give them to the people on the streets, or do you just throw them away? Cos I really doubt that you finish all of those humongous amounts of cake.
First thing I thought of when I saw "Defying Gravity" was Wicked the Musical lol. You should have a bakery make a WIcked the Musical Cake that would be awesome I would totally love that!
For $600 the second cake should have been 2-3x the size it was and I agree it is a nice cake but it doesn’t showcase the gravity defying aspect of cake art. The other 2 are epic and my favorite is the 3rd one. I do wish it had some sparkle on it. I love, love LOVE all of the movement and it easily stands out above the rest in my opinion.

The cakes are beautiful. But, for $600 (each) I would expect these cakes to feed more people; especially the last one. There should have been a base cake. How to cut the last two seems to be a puzzlement. 🤷🏼♀️
More for the art and presentation with what's being paid coz you need expertise to know how some edible and non edible parts can work with each other
thats because your more so paying for the artistry that goes into the cake and less for the actual cake itself. if you just wanted to buy a simple sheet cake youd get tremendously more cake for way less money because it would be alot less time/work/skill going into that. cakes like these are more like paying for edible art and art is expensive. i personally agree that i would never pay $600 for such little cake but thats just because i cant fathom paying so much money for art thats gonna get eaten vs art id keep forever. not saying these cakes arent worth that much money, just saying to me personally its not worth it to spend my money on one.
True its more like a centerpieces.
SHE WANTED GRAVITY DEFIYING CAKE.
I love how she is pointing out the mistakes while wearing a shirt that says “focus on the positive”
I think The last cake is the best. The second one is REALLY strange. It’s definitely more 3D
than defying gravity.
My best guess is that it was probably styrofoam to stay that well assembled and able to bounce, but I can think of several other things that would’ve worked too!
probably a styrofoam body and head, with legs primarily made of wire
@@eastdakota6954 if that’s the case it’s not really gravity defying cake, but just a pretty cake topper.
Omg! That last cake is genuinely one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen! I’m single as a Pringle and over here wanting that for my future wedding!! 😍😍
You could totally make a gravity defying cake! You’ve got mad cake decorating skills! Do it!!! Please!!! 😁🙏
it would have been so interesting to see how these cakes where made, what did hold them up, what was all cake.
I think a 3D dragon or castle cake challenge would be amazing. Both of these would have so much detail.
The beautiful white bird cake was my favorite! Absolutely stunning artistic talent to make that cake!!
I really like the phoenix cake...my jaw literally dropped.
It is amazing!
I wished it was more phoenix-ie colors...like reds, blues, golds, etc.
But still crazy amazing.
that's what I was thinking it was missing. the white is beautiful on it but reds and golds would make it beyond stunning
Exactly but it was amazing 🤩
I think that was the only thing missing from this masterpiece. The white is epic, but more color would have definitely helped the details pop and the white also doesn't show up on camera as well.
@@TheIcingArtist I agree completely, we should have gotten some pearling or extra bright colors but man, that was freaking awesome
The owl cake is absolutely adorable. What a cute little character. 😍🦉
That first cake is amazing to look at! It’s sad that there’s not much cake there, but as a visual showstopper…it’s beautiful. ❤
I like that I could cut and serve the Pegasus cake and guests could still see and enjoy its beauty to the very end!
I would LOVE that bird cake for my wedding ❤️❤️❤️❤️
The bird cake is amazing! It looks stunning and the actual cake was gravity defying.
I love you and the cakes YOU make!! You make cakes so much better than any of the cakes I’ve ever seen you had made! These were a bit disappointing for $600!!
This last cake is so insanely beautiful....would be a spectacular wedding cake (topper, much smaller)
I hope the bakeries post these all over their social media. They're so cool!
3. Penguin girl - Not a gravity defying cake
2. Horse - Not a gravity defying cake. Just a cake with a styrofoam topper
1. Swan - Finally someone actually meets the criteria. Great detail and the actual cake is gravity defying!
That white peacock is magnificent!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🤗🤗🤗🫶🏻🫶🏻💋🇺🇸🌸
The pegasus cake is just a topper. The last one not only met the challenge but was also yummy.
The Phoenix is the most creative and stunning cake I’ve ever seen. An art sculpture.
Kevin you are a magician. How on earth do you get these cakes home in one peice?
I really enjoy your channel. Just wanted to let you know the Owl is holding a Parasol rather than an umbrella. One is to keep rain off the other is to keep sun off.
I feel like for the second one the theme could have been the fact that it’s summer time however it’s really hot outside which could explain the cheeks and also for the umbrella some people do use umbrellas in the summer time to avoid the sun beaming on them. IDK just my assumption😁😂
These cakes aew so insane! They are so beautiful! It is so fun to see what artist can come up with when you let them do what ever they love.
I'm very curious to see how Kevin gets these things home in one piece. Maybe you should do a video on this lol 😂
Three amazing cakes, for me it was the white cake bird! Love this. Next cake, how about a "Carousel" cake?
These are my absolute favorite videos!!!!! 💜 u and thank you so much for these comparison videos I could literally watch them all day!!!!!!
I love how exited she always is and how you can hear how stressed Kevin is lol
The umbrella in the second cake was a parasol, not for rain. That's why her ice cream was melting.
I love the white Phoenix! It’s so pretty! I want that for my wedding.
Btw, can you do this for Easter? Third favorite holiday
Meeting and interviewing the people who make the cakes at these bakeries! And perhaps a bake-off between you and them? :)
These are incredible!!!! I love your uploads, such a great way to start the day.
Absolutely Beautiful. And Yummy looking. I love the horse leaping towards the Faire. I also love the horse that is supported by it tail feathers
Love you Laurie glad your feeling better and are able to record!!
I agree! I would love to see all the different edible pieces. Especially with the first cake - I want to know how it is supported and what it is made of!
Probably the body is edible. Wings, feathers I'd don't eat the wire lol.
The last one is so beautiful!
I absolutely love the peacock cake! But I so wish they would have done it in color! If it was in color it would just be so breathtaking!
can you sent a picture of your dog and tell the Bakeries to do a 3D cake
t think it will be sooo cute and fun to see how each Bakery did
WOW! It is mind blowing to see the creations bakers put so much effort into! I think it it would be great to see you have a tutorial for covering a cake in fondant. (The fondant base.) Thanks and I love your videos!
Here is my opinion:
1) The first one was amazing.
Agree
If I be truthful , judging other's effort is very easy ...
No hate , Just talk of heart.
I love her so much...
I’m curious where the leftovers of the cakes go? Do you guys eat all of them, do you give them to your neighbors and relatives and friends, do you give them to the people on the streets, or do you just throw them away? Cos I really doubt that you finish all of those humongous amounts of cake.
I wanna know where the cakes go too, it’d be a waste to find out if all of those tasty cakes are being thrown out
I bet the cake artist is glad once the cake is picked up and not there problem any more lol talk about a stressful job xx
First thing I thought of when I saw "Defying Gravity" was Wicked the Musical lol. You should have a bakery make a WIcked the Musical Cake that would be awesome I would totally love that!
i LOVE the swan pleaseeeeeeee omg its so BEAUTIFUL
Was just scrolling through your page and this comes up… exactly what I needed now 😍😍😍
Please start making more cakes rather than paying people to do so. I enjoy learning and you're a great teacher!
I don’t think cake 2 was gravity defying or worth the price, but it was still my favorite. SO CUTE.
