An obsessive collector, the banker-turned-entrepreneur/journalist shares the source for his passion about timepieces and shows us some of the most meaningful and rare items in his collection.
A watch influencer who values the purpose-driven designs, functionality, history and story of watches more than the brand and price. Glad this guy's on the front line.
I believe the telemetry scale works is by starting the chronograph when you see a flash of light and then stop the chronograph once you hear the sound of the light. Its designed to measure distance based on the speed of sound.

You are so right, buy what you like, what give you a good feeling. I bought a tudor sub from 1969 on eBay, wasn't in a good condition but a real good watchmaker helpt me and i love it. It may not be the best looking and you can see time hasnt been very kind to it, but it is in my collection and works perfect. Buy what gives you a good feeling, that is the only thing.

Ben - I am a fan. Though this is two years ago, I've been curious about your background. Great story (yours), great journalism, great content. Your interviewing style. Knowledge. Demeanor. It's all admirable. Keep up the good work. Perhaps it's time for a refresh - some more content about you and the office (showcase some of the items - looks interesting). Best.
The amount of times I have re-watched this video is beyond ridiculous
My father gave me his Explorer 114270. Not only I will cherish it, but I'm purely astound at how accurate and rugged the watch was. My father kept his 1016.

I am, and will always, my father has a sub 5512, limited edition omega speed master and a cal. 321 (fucken beautiful chronograph). Vacheron Constatin, and a 1920 omega tank. The way how me and my father connect are watches, business, and life. That Omega cal. 321. really gorgeous! I will pass down my Explorer when I have a son.
Your daddy's collection has nothing on my Casio BP120. Relax buddy.

I agree that the story behind the watch carries more weight than the amount of money spent on it. I recently bought my first true luxury watch. And while it is a milestone in its own way, it is still just a new watch and "just a product". Unlike my old beat up watches that have been around the world with me and one that was a gift from my dad in the early 90's.

Speaking of Tag Heuer, I watched “The Exorcist” the movie yesterday, and in the movie there’s a scene with a Doctor that’s telling the main character her daughter might need to see an exorcist if she believes. In that scene he was wearing a beast Tag Heuer Autiva chronograph that was blue and white with a blue nato strap. Best scene of the whole movie!

This guy and Federico are the two best watch guys on youtube. Nobody else is even close. I'd have dinner with either of these guys because they are interesting and could probably talk about something besides watches, but the rest of the youtubers not so much. Who would win a watch knowledge cage match fight between Ben and Federico? I don't know. These are the important kinds of existential questions that keep me up late at night.
1:19 is such a beautiful watch. That one is probably top 3 in terms of dream watches of mine. Ben has immaculate taste in watches.
Universal Geneve are amazing watch company, especially their vintage kind, I've been trying to look for a tri-compax.
I agree, that is a very handsome watch. Small diameter, thin, symmetrical, all face/little bezel, decorated yet simple dial, etc.
I prefer 34mm-41mm My wrist are small I enjoy a 36mm its a good size.

This is just a phase a lot of guys go through. Eventually, you will keep 2 or 3 watches and will be happy with them for the rest of your life. Sadly, the only way to get there is to spend a fortune and make a lot of mistakes.
Not really how telemetry scale works. It has to do with the speed of sound. You start the stopwatch when you see an event, and stop when you hear it. The scale tells you how far away the event was. You can use it for explosions, lightning, etc. so still useful in combat, but not exactly like Ben said.
I own a Universal Geneve Tri compax 1944 just like yours in the video. I'm proud owner.

its just an inexpensive piece of decoration for a watch collector, most of them wealthy, it's just like a vase or a painting, but cheaper.
the quality is superb and the knowledge inside.
mondani books are high end just like this and priced high but the knowledge inisde is nuts. rolex has gone to the family for questions its in such detail
$2,300 for that Carrera chronograph? You'd never see one at that price today. Crazy the price level some of these vintage models are reaching.

Funnily enough, you do not hear about Ebel anymore. It was one of my first watch when I started working in the early eighties and it used to be so popular!

1:20 , "this watch dates back to 1943, so kind of last few days of Second World War....", Ben it might shock you to learn a basic fact ; that WWII ended in 1945. I wish you were correct though , then 10 to15 million people would not have to die.
Have you ever thought that maybe he meant to say last few years but accidentally said days? Because 1943 is a year not a day. So why would he say last few days? Must've been a mistake.
Maybe it was manufactured in 43, do we know when delivery was taken.......

Just a guess, maybe the engraving on the watch stands for a day they met or gor married and the watch is a later thought of present? I guess there are a lot more story behind the watch that the video does not mention..

+alex24389 It's a Heuer Carrera made for the Volvo top executives in the 60's. I believe this actual watch is currently for sale at Christie's, you should check it out if you're interested.
Not to be pedantic, but that's not how a telemeter scale works. It has nothing to do with "by the time the shell would reach you". I do suspect Clymer knows better and just got mixed up.

Explanation of the telemetric scale failed. Not to mention the fact that if an artillery shell reached you, the distance of the enemy doesn't concern you anymore.

ebay may be fake, where else can you get second hand?
"True journalism?" That doesn't involve conflicts of interest Ben. Baselworld: Patek pays for your dinner and you post a Patek article. I'm supposed to take that at face value? Zenith car drives you all day and then an article is released. That is unbiased? Auction house articles and undisclosed ad revenue? Does not appear to be conflict free journalism Ben.
+Samson518 Unfortunately, most people wouldn't take Hodinkee as a journalism site, it's more of a product introductory and analysis site. Being such a site does mean they need ad revenue to keep the travel, staff, production, publishing etc costs up. I respect what you're saying, but Hodinkee is doing more good than harm for the watch world, it's bringing younger generations like myself into this world of engineering, architecture and sheer beauty. I would say the net good it's doing heavily outweighs almost every site out there.
+Blake Lee Well spoken, and would agree with you, however, I think Ben views himself as a "journalist" and not just sales/product promotion. Alex Williams' NYT article (and others) would seem to support that, however, when you ask if there is an editorial policy on separation of business development/sales from the articles so that the appearance of conflicts is mitigated or eliminated entirely it would appear to not be the case. I would look to car journals that explicitly disclose if the author was flown out, housed and provided any other remuneration or benefit for the chance to write an article. It's fairly straightforward and important for the readers to know this when reading what they perceive to be an unbiased article.
With that said, I am happy to see the interest in watches expand.
If there is money involved, it's a business. Real journalism never really existed (Some European Press, but not anymore) Just look at the Watchfinder & Co. since they were bought by Richemont - they always now "independently" decided that every A. Lange & Sohne is better than Patek.

So Tag Heuer either do not know their history or you talked to the wrong person or still that engraving means another thing during 1963. Just my thoughts....

Almost all of these guys with great watch collections seem to have a father who gifted them a rare Rolex or Omega when they were a teenager. I did not. So, I blame my father for the $100 Seiko on my wrist.
My dad and grand dad gave me like 20 Poljot and Vostok watches when I was a kid. I lost them all xD
