I think this interview points to the way forward for Hodinkee, no more Talking Watches with newly wealthy sports stars with their vulgar watch collection spread over the table, rather sensible conversation about watches and the industry with a quick reference to what the interviewee is wearing.

I rather like Ben Clymer, and although Hodinkee may have lost its way slightly he has made a huge contribution to the growth of watch collecting and indeed watch making.

Not slightly. They did lose their way. Time will tell on their commitment to return to their roots. Either way happy to get one less spammy email from them on $300 off an overpriced used watch.

Hodinkee was, is, a success because of Clymer. The probably put his life and soul to get the company to get where it is.

As a watch fan, I enjoy more design & the piece's history than its complication or value.

I love the “Talking to” videos on TH-cam but I feel they need to focus more on collectors and not celebrities. I want to know why they bought the watch, what they looked for, how they found it etc

@Ben and @Perpetual Passion, I was introduced into watches by Hodinkee, T&H, WatchBox or Watchuwant and so on but my journey has only really just taken off and I am in such a great mental state thanks to the great media outlets and most notably Hodinkee. Watch collecting is more than a personal statement, it is academic from what I have come to learn, people wonder why I am dying to get a simple moon swatch, from an academic stand point and thanks to all the info out there, I know it is very similar to the first wave of quartz watches swatch made to save the industry, so, academics, education, style, passion for art all come into the hobby and it should be that way for the long term health of the hobby, We lost our way to a certain degree and as mentioned by another commentator, athletes and other high profile individuals with no substance became advocates.

I do not think the older collectors are unhappy that a big wave of ppl are now into watches, I am very sure it is the big jump in prices that we see all across the board that has sort of brought an unethical side to a hobby that SHOULD be some what about passion and fun. However, I do think from my growing up as a collector watching Hodinkee talking watches, we were brought into a world were vintage watches that were the staple of the community were already at very steep prices. With my experience and memory, I think prices for so many watches have stagnated and I think it has done us new collectors a favor, the steep prices we saw over the last few years were from personalities trying to move prices on a very narrow set of watches such as new independents and the main stream pieces like Rolex, AP and so on. However, as I stated above, vintage watches in my opinion were already at a very steep position.
I think even Hodinkee is sort of a parallel example because they tried to go too up market and now, sort of going back to their roots.
