    PLEASE NOTE: This video is several years old. I leave these videos up from my freshman year of high school because it's silly to try to delete the evidence of their existence and as a humbling reminder that we all have to start somewhere. Please understand that the person in this video is not the player I am today or strive to be in the future. Thank you.
    Excerpts played in this video:
    - Trumpet Voluntary by Jeremiah Clarke
    - Sonata for Trumpet by Henry Purcell
    This is a review of the AP190 Bach piccolo trumpet in B-flat/A. I'm extremely lucky to be able to play on such an amazing instrument. I don't have anything negative to say about how it looks or sounds. If anything, I'm not worthy of playing it. In the month or so that I have owned this instrument, I've only had one major gripe: the water key broke off. I suppose the spring was wound too tightly and it caused the key to crack under the pressure. Due to the trumpet's warranty, however, we were able to get it repaired without any expense.

    Great video man. I'm so glad you pointed out that it doesn't actually play any higher than your regular big Bb trumpet. I think a lot of people imagine they are instantly going to be able to play an octave higher when they play a picc. Props to you for showing your playing too. They are really hard to play.You done great, post another in a few months.

    Nice informative video. I perform on a Bach Artisan AP190 piccolo trumpet as well. I use the trumpet tuning slides (shanks). I love the ease and the sound of playing my piccolo trumpet. I did change one thing on the horn. I replaced the 4th slide water key with an Amado water key. Just for the ease of emptying the water from that slide. The original water key wasn’t cutting it for me.
    Happy trumpeting.

      Thanks for the comment! Lately I have been testing this instrument with my Reeves 43C trumpet mouthpiece and I feel more free than with my Blessing 3C cornet mouthpiece, but it's not a fair experiment. After all, who knows whether it's the shanks or the mouthpieces themselves? Unfortunately I'm comparing an average, run-of-the-mill cornet mouthpiece to a state-of-the-art trumpet mouthpiece. I wish I had a control mouthpiece for both so I could do a fair test.

    Just watched your "years later" updated review of this horn. Seeing how much your playing has progressed since you were 14 (not to mention your progress in narrating a useful review) makes be believe maybe there may be hope for me yet. LOL (At age 62, probably not, but hey, I can still dream, can't I?)

    Hey man, got a question.
    I’m a trombone/euph player by trade, and am looking into doing more with my trumpet than just messing around. Somethings up with my embouchure. How do I transition between the embouchure of the two?

    • @SamuelPlaysBrass
      @SamuelPlaysBrass  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for the comment. This is a tough issue that I'm not sure I'm qualified to handle, but what I've learned about the trumpet embouchure is to keep the corners firm and the aperture open. My trumpet teacher uses the analogy of saying the 'm' sound to form an embouchure. Also try backing off on the air if you're a low brass player primarily. The trumpet is half the size of a trombone or euphonium, and its bore is very small and cylindrical in comparison, so it takes much less air to play and it's much easier to 'overblow' and ruin your chops. Best of luck!

    If you keep snapping the case latches open, the springs will eventually fail. Restraining them will prevent this from happening. Moving the levers when closing the latches will prevent wear of the catches.

    • @SamuelPlaysBrass
      @SamuelPlaysBrass  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wish I'd known this earlier. Thanks for bringing it to light; one of the springs did indeed give out a number of months ago. I'd had no real idea as to why that happened.

      @@SamuelPlaysBrass My father was an engineer, and he told me about this when I was in my early teens, many decades ago. He explained that unrestrained springs will go through a number of vibration cycles, causing premature metal fatigue. This is why shock absorbers are used on cars and trucks to prevent catastrophic results of a spring breaking. Thanks to my dad's advice, I have never had a latch spring failure.

    Hey! I have a question on low brass players playing a high brass instrument, do you recommend it? Or would it mess with my embouchure ?

    • @SamuelPlaysBrass
      @SamuelPlaysBrass  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Good question! Frankly, I think it has to be done very carefully. If you do attempt to play a high brass instrument you must allow the learning curve to be very gradual. You must not try to force out the high notes because that will mess with your low brass chops. As long as you’re careful, sure everyone’s different, but I think you’ll be fine.

      @SamuelPlaysBrass  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the comment! I don't remember exactly what I was using in this video, but it must have been something generic with a 3 rim. Nowadays, I use a Blessing 3C cornet mouthpiece with the provided cornet shanks. I find it gives me slightly better intonation/freer high register than a trumpet mouthpiece

    • @earlyriser1861

    Would you use piccolo for lead trumpet in jazz band?

    • @SamuelPlaysBrass
      @SamuelPlaysBrass  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I had the same thought when I was first looking at buying one, but believe it or not you absolutely shouldn't. The piccolo is an extremely refined instrument, meant to sound like old baroque trumpets that were designed for stately, royal music. A lead player in a big band is supposed to have a great big full-size trumpet sort of sound. Plus, shakes are much harder on the picc because relatively speaking the interval gaps are wider. TD;LR definitely don't use the picc in jazz unless you're emulating a clarinet in a traditional jazz combo.

    You don't look like you use enough top lip in the mp, you use like a 35/75 placement - however why do you use a 50/50 placement on your Coventry Carol video but use such a low placement on your other trumpet videos?

    • @SamuelPlaysBrass
      @SamuelPlaysBrass  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good eye. This is because I’ve been undergoing an embouchure shift in an attempt to bring my chin up, my horn down just a tad, and my top lip 50% into the mouthpiece

      M1G Just make sure not to overblow. It only takes about half the air, but with twice the energy. Make sure you work on good tone instead of trying to play as high as you can, and never play it for more than fifteen minutes without taking a long break. It's an exhausting instrument to play!

  • @jean-pierredevent970
    @jean-pierredevent970 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have an older Selmer piccolo trumpet,not a bad instrument but so small bored that I personally find it unplayable, most likely even for many normal players. My lips get overtaxed easily and "sudden" (say during a concert). Careful practice does not work to adapt and there is also the problem that with a big mouthpiece it sounds very dull and flat. But this seems an wider bored instrument where you can perhaps even use a Bach 1.5C on and still sound very acceptable??

    • @SamuelPlaysBrass
      @SamuelPlaysBrass  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the comment! You absolutely could use as large of a mouthpiece as you want on this. I don't use anything smaller than a 3C and it works perfectly fine
