    The piccolo trumpet exposes the "fast air" thing for the myth it is. High-range playing is actually falsetto playing. Just as you do when singing, you drive the falsetto range down into the normal range and vice versa, in order to disguise the transition. The falsetto knack is the very thing that prevents most players from developing the extreme high register, and educators aren't aware they're doing it so they can't teach it. They attribute it to "fast air", but they're sadly mistaken. Percentage-wise, a very small proportion of trumpet players ever manage the knack of falsetto playing. Extra support plus feel is what they're mistaking for "fast air". It's the embouchure set for playing in the falsetto range that squeezes their air-column, the way air moves between blades of grass trapped between the thumbs.

    • @bkf8166
      @bkf8166 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      When you talk about 'squeezes the air-column', like between two blades of grass, that's a drop in pressure and an increase in velocity. Bernoulli is pretty clear on that. You're describing a venturi.
      Could you talk about the falsetto knack some more? Never heard that term before.

    • @artvandelay8090
      @artvandelay8090 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You're right, the whole "fast air" thing is a myth, yet you have people like Bobby Shew and James Morrison going around talkin' this "faster air" bullshit and because these guys are great players, everyone believes them. These guys should stick to playing the trumpet instead of talking about it and leave the physics conversations to the physics experts.

    Great primer on the picc. Thanks. One thing I noticed about the picc is that air velocity is even more important than on a B flat. Increased velocity, decreased volume (like you said).

    In my youth (Early 80s) I played a Bach Piccolo trumpet, and found it very easy to play. It would be great if you could partner with a distributor to compare and comment on the playability of different horns. As a music teacher I have access to a lot of different student horns and a few intermediate level, in addition to my professional horns, the differences in intonation and playability can be startling.

    I bought a piccolo trumpet, and indded with the standard mouthpieces it does not play easier the higher octave Bb4-Bb5. BUT then I realized that the fault is in the mouthpieces and I bought small mouthpieces of 11mm-14,4.mm diameter from resin or acorn that are normally used for wooden cornetti musical instruments , AND THE MIRACLE HAPPENED ! Playing the Bb4-Bb5 octave became almost as easy as playing the Bb3-Bb4 octave in the standard trumpet.

    • @gregmonks

      It was the cornetto that in part fixed my embouchure. Bottomed out at first until someone showed me the off-set embouchure plus a very light touch.

      The mouthpiece that the guy in the video is using looks about the same size as a normal Bb trumpet mouthpiece, which is probably why it's not easy to play high notes. The smaller the mouthpiece, the easier it is to play high.

    when i played one, i used a Bach 7e which, although it wasnt comfortable in the high pitches of the Brandenburg, its did everything else extremely well, and was comfortable and had a full sound. The horn responded to it very well and did not cause me to over exert on most anything.

    Piccolo with A pipe allowed me to play notes written in the treble key of keyboards. The transposition is somewhat staightforward by reading the treble notes as if they were in the Bass clef. Allowed me to play along with organ or piano and directly reading the same sheet.

    This talks sense. The piccolo trumpet is very difficult to play and requires a totally different technique. For most starting players the piccolo ends up sounding like a kazoo, until you learn not to overblow which is harder than you think. This guy with his little sample at the end shows he’s mastered the instrument. One comment there are very many variants of design of piccolo trumpets depending on the trumpet maker.

  • @martineyles

    It must be technically possible to play Brandenburg 2 on a modern non-piccolo trumpet, but you only hear it played on replica baroque trumpets or on piccolo trumpets. I suppose players who aren't aiming for "authenticity" just go for the tool that will make hitting the correct notes more reliable.

    • @crispiansp
      @crispiansp ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It depends what type of orchestra you play with. A modern one like English Chamber orchestra or Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra will require piccolo trumpet pitched at A=440
      A ‘period’ instrument orchestra like the Academy of Ancient Music will use a so called Baroque trumpet pitched 1/2 a tone lower at A=415
      Performing Bach’s 2nd Brandenburg Concerto ( which I performed and recorded many times on both) is like running a 4 minute mile in my opinion. Other musicians do not understand that you cannot just play it again straight away. Even the great Maurice Andre agreed with me !

    The Bach mouthpieces for the high register have often a rounded rim which digs in my lips. The Schilke 15A4a works much better . It is big and flat but falls immediately straight down in the cup so those bottoming out easily have normally enough room. The wide diameter assures flexibility. The tone however is sadly (at first?) not really beautiful. The 14A4a is more rounded, I think. I never tried it.

      Sorry I’m so late in responding! There is loads of beginner trumpet music available on the internet. As for piccolo trumpet, from the comments I feel there is some confusion on the topic of fingerings. The fingerings are the same across all trumpets. An F is 1st valve on any horn you play, etc with all notes. The difference is when you begin to transpose. Although the fingerings of the notes you are playing are the same as you’re used to, you are now reading and playing different notes than those on the page. Does that make sense?

    • @codybtrumpet
      @codybtrumpet  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Chris! If the part is written in A, you would just play it as written on the A side of the piccolo trumpet (assuming we’re only talking about piccolo trumpet pieces) no additional slides needed. i don’t believe you would find anything in E that you would play on n piccolo trumpet. The Brandenburg concerto is in F. That’s about as close as you would get.
      However to give you an answer - Ein Heldenleben for example has a short part written for trumpet in E. I would play a C trumpet and read up a major 3rd.
      Hmm, perhaps I should do a video on transposition 🤔

      Normally you have to pull out the 4th slide to get the lower register in tune with the normal register without use of the 4th valve. When the tuning are in A sometimes the 1st slide has to pulled oud. But it really depends of the trumpet.

    It costs more, is harder to play, requires relearning your fingerings, sounds objectively worse unless your are Maurice Andre (no offense but I'd give odds that almost everyone sounds better on a Bb (pic wise, hats off man)), doesn't swing and qualifies you to play Penny Lane. On the upside, it will actually help you to learn to play upstairs by giving you the sense of where the sweetspot is up there... It obviously takes years to decades play.

The mouthpiece I used here was a cornet shank, and had a small rim and shallow cup. Perfect for piccolo trumpet!

      Picc does suck for a while until you figure it out. Even at the point I made this video there were many things I struggled with on this instrument.

    And if your videos that long I'm surprised that it cannot be that bored like for example it's nothing interesting I'm looking at it sounds like like nothing I can't even describe

      Selena Belteus thanks for the wonderful comment! You know what the best part of TH-cam is? If you don’t like something, you don’t have to watch it :) if your looking for mindless entertainment, try some cat videos, might suit you.

      TrumpetGeek NATION was just saying like if you want like more views and more people to subscribe like you at least have to make it more interesting like I didn't really say to be like more meaner things and I never watched cat videos I guess that am not a cat person but thinks and I was just saying like if you want like like I know what you do is you think it's interesting but I don't see it as it's true thing as you do and I was just saying that if you want more views or subscribers you should at least do fun things I was just saying

      It is boring to you because you obviously aren't a serious trumpet player (if you are a trumpet player at all). Please, just leave.
