The Civic Gets A $24,000 Audio Upgrade: Front Stage Build & Build Overview

  • Time for part 2 of the Civic audio install where we get into the nitty gritty of the front stage. Derek did an amazing job putting this whole system together and it's mind blowing just how sleek and OEM it looks. The true audio quality of the build would never come across on camera or through your cellphone speakers. It's one of those systems you have to hear in person to truly appreciate.

      You must be new here, and that’s ok. This is what Matt does. He gets a car dialed in, sparing no expense, and then runs a give-away through his store. The influx of revenue offsets the stratospheric costs of the cars, so it makes sense from a business standpoint. Sinking this kind of money into a home theater system that wouldn’t create any revenue, and likely wouldn’t increase the home’s value enough to recoup the costs, is just poor financial planning.

    Great two part series on your sound system Matt! EXACTLY how I would have it done as well. I competed in IASCA SQ competitions back in the days in the Street Smart category, when I had my orange Nissan Sentra SE-R SpecV. The sound system was done to perfection too, with a three way setup up front (Focal bass drivers with Alpine Type X mids and tweeters) in custom kick panels, with crossovers, sound deadening, JL Audio Slash series amps (4 channel for fronts and a separate 500/1 for the 12 inch JL Audio W6V2 subwoofer in a JL Audio Wedge enclosure), Alpine head unit, etc. My setup took pretty much first prize in all the competitions throughout the season in 2005, to eventually win first overall in my category in a finals in New York that year. Crazy memories! (I was also usually taking home the prize for the cleanest ride in show n shine portions of those meets).
    Overall, your videos put me right back in those memories and make me want to buy a project car and go have those boys in Boston work on my audio setup too! :)

      Not even close. I've installed higher dollar installs - and into CRX's as well. I'd have gone Dynaudio midbass but HLCD's in the front. The soundstage and imaging is way better with the tweeters in the kicks, but you always have a slight sensation of rolling forward. Horns provide the more balanced left and right distance (same math as having the tweeter in the kicks, but the dispersion is more natural sounding with a more open soundstage (but you also need a tonne of eq to make it work, because compression drivers).

    Speaker placement is weird, mids and tweeters in the A pillar and woofers in the kicks would make much more sense for sound quality.
    Also full active would make more sense.
    No subwoofer ?
    I don’t see how a 3 way passive front system and amp and dsp would cost anywhere near 24k , even with the hours for the install.
    Its not a bad install, just not for that money.

    He did a great job covering the install, it was a joy to watch. Installation is only half of it and tuning it properly will make or break a system. I will never forget when I did a demo and I was sitting in my passenger seat. I thought something was wrong. Absolutely a different experience when sitting in the driver seat for where it was time alignment with the rta. I used to sit in the truck for hours in a parking lot not to disturb my neighbors listening to all sorts of different music. You have to get flac files. I was hearing things that I didn't even know where there in the music. Some of my go to was Hotel California of course and Alice and Chains unplugged, Greatest hits Huey Lewis and the news. It's something very special to have a system of that quality. Enjoy it

  • @hamann8070
    @hamann8070 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    The only downside to a SQ setup is you are constantly listening to music from the past which were produced with extreme fidelity. There is only so many times I can listen to Hotel California though haha. This setup will reveal any and every flaw there is in the production of modern music. With that said, I miss my old SQ system even though I spent about 1/3 of what Matt spent (which is still a lot lol)

    This answers my question I had posted in the previous video about the doors being sealed or not. Glad to see they are! The craftsmanship and attention to detail in this build is second to none. I love it, not only is it stealthy but it's also CLEAN and aesthetically pleasing. People don't know how much of a difference a great tune with a high quality DSP makes. You can even make terrible gear sound good. I've never listened to Dynaudio but it seems we have similar ears because I too prefer silk dome tweeters than harsh metal ones.

    I shed a tear for the effort he put forth.
    I have been building Iasca winners since 1991 and that use to be the formula.
    Tweets and mids in custom kicks with midbass in the door.
    Usually used Morell 8s in the doors and 4s and those deep silk tweets that were designed for home audio. Always used electronic x overs with 6 dedicated channels.
    The drivers tweeter should point to a spot that was 2 inches to the right of your right ear. In other words if u were to stick a cigarette in your right ear hole and the tweeter were a blue laser you would light it up. The passenger tweeter should point to your left ear. This gives the most accurate imaging and the off axis response of the driver tweet reduces the localization.
    But wtf that was over 30 years ago. Richard Clark would be racing that Grand National if he wanted a trophy with today's DSP tech and processing power combined with active correction in real time with Sound cancelation tech.
    If you are going for nostalgia you hit a grand slam but if u want the combo that would max out a score sheet at the Iasca finals your on the wrong road bro

Honestly, I would keep this car for my son to learn how to drive manual transmission on and then pass it on to him. He's 13 now, so I would have another 7-8 years with it while he learned to drive and take care of a car. He wouldn't get the EM1 Civic right away. He could beat up a different Honda for his very first car. He wouldn't get gifted the EM1 until he could appreciate at it at maybe 21 years old or something.

    Nice simple 3-way SQ setup. I'm putting together an old-school setup with Alpine IVA-W505, PXA-H700, Soundstream amps and Velodyne DF10SC servo sub. This vid gave me some ideas.

    Oh, this is what you had in mind, so not a 90’s trunk filling, in your face system. Seem a bit crazy and way over the top for any car, but fun to watch and see it pulled off! I kept thinking you are going to change your mind and keep it, I’m waiting for that video.

    FYI by IASCA standpoint center image should be center of the dash not center to the driver position ... if you got a really good sounding car center image will be center of the hood

      Obsessed Garage sorry, I can’t agree. If you have a Center image in front of you, the remainder of the left stage will be squeezed and the right size stretched. The stage should be more or less symmetrical. Center image in the center of the car. Hopefully, the car images reasonably well from both sides of the car.

    EXCELLENT fabrication! ..but.... I'm afraid I just can't give the same praise for the Sound quality side of things... "Old School" methods simply don't compare to current.. Let me explain.
    - Placing the mids and tweeters down in the kick panel area, leads to your Sound Stage usually sounding like its down low - even with the best of tuning.
    - Mids and Tweeters are far more directional than midbass and sub bass. You and the passengers feet & legs are blocking them, constantly shifting the spectral balance.
    - Every kickpanel mid/tweet car i've ever sat in, paled in comparison to the Sound Quality possible when done correctly.
    What sounds DAMN good, is:
    - Mids/ Tweeters mounted near head level, in as close proximity to each other as possible (A-pillar / Dash / Sails)
    - Midbass in kickpanels or door
    - DSP to control time alignment, Level-matching, phase, EQ via Real-time-analysis, etc

    • @pocket5s1
      @pocket5s1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      marviltron which is 100% incorrect. It would mean his left stage is horribly collapsed. Center image should be in the center of the stage, and in 99% of cars that is going to be close to the center of the windshield.

    • @marviltron9562
      @marviltron9562 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      sqpapa I understand what you’re saying regarding the center image being in the center in most if not all cars but perhaps this particular setup is customized to be enjoyed just by the driver. I’m trying to understand why the left stage would collapse: could you elaborate?

    • @pocket5s1
      @pocket5s1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      marviltron think of it like this:
      L--LC--C--RC--R
      ^ that is a properly images stage. lc is left center and rc is right center. If you put the center where the driver is you end up with:
      L-LC-C----RC--R
      Collapsed stage ^
