Great video! I'm currently finishing my BSN program and I've been thinking about becoming a FNP with a DNP because I love working with lots of different populations, plus I can see myself teaching one day!

Hi friend. Im currently in N.P. school, just started and I wanted to get DNP but my school talked me out of it for good reason starting out. (CHEAPER PER CREDIT HOUR). Anyway, I am struggling trying to figure out if I do want to continue to a DNP in nursing, or actually both DNP and Phd in something else. Phd. in neuroscience or nero physics (hopeing there will be such a thing eventually). This content has helped tremendously so thank you. Obviously will still be struggling with my decision for a while, but I want to teach, want to practice, and want to change how research is done and discover establish new pathways. So I guess I'm on the path to lots of money in education! 😂❤

Hello:) love your content. Can you cover the topic of DNP- Executive Leadership and if this pathway allows for an opportunity to practice in the clinical setting/bedside as an NP/APRN later on if I desires to change jobs? Also, can you verify whether getting a MSN means you're automatically a NP or if one needs to apply to a specific NP program alongside their MSN? Sorry if I made that confusing. I have a BSN and a Healthcare Management MBA and looking to get a DNP-Executive Leadership terminal degree next. Because the DNP is relatively "new" there isn't much info that I can find for what it means for me if I'd want to return to the bedside later on down the line as a NP. Would I have to go back to get my MSN-FNP or obtain a FNP-BC certification from ANCC as a way to circumvent for example. Will the "Nurse Executive" concentration hurt me if I would want to apply to NP roles in the clinical setting? Because I have my MBA in HC Mgmt, I can apply to DNP Exec. Leadership programs but not Clinical DNP programs bc I don't have a MSN. I'm SOOOO confused. Please help

Thanks for watching! Basically, there are three ways to become a nurse practitioner-- 1) earn MSN with the specialty, 2) earn DNP with the specialty, or 3) earn a post-graduate certificate in the specialty. In the specialty means that your degree/certificate must be in the same program of study--in this case, an NP specialty. The third option means you must already have a graduate degree in nursing and then can enroll in a post-graduate certificate program. In the situation you described, you could earn a DNP in executive leadership, however, in order to practice as an NP, you would then have to enroll in a post-graduate certificate program of the NP specialty you are trying to earn. Earning a DNP in Exec Leadership will not allow you to practice as an NP. Now, you could earn an MSN in the NP specialty you choose, then enroll in an MSN to DNP to Nurse Exec Leadership. It really depends on what your career goals are. I am always happy to chat. If you would like to discuss further, email me at info@theacademicnurse.com and we can set up a time to chat! Happy to help :)

Thank you for your kind words! There are paths to PhD that do not require a Master's degree. In most cases, you will need a BSN, then you can apply to BSN to PhD programs. There are several reputable programs--most require you to take at least some classes on campus. There are online options, but those are few in PhD study. Good luck on your journey! Message me if you have any questions 🙂

Glad to help! On campus means that you would have to physically attend classes at the college or university. Keep me updated on your journey! 🩺😊
