The Grandia series had the Greatest Dynamic Turn Based Battle System ever made in a JRPG and Sadly now its lost in the past, I played all four games and I just love them.
It is the best RPG combat system. I don't know why other's didn't copy it. It was the logical extension of the "Active Time Battle" system but it's more fun allowing you to see where you are in relation to when your enemy is attacking and it allows you to strategically cancel, alot of fun. I do wish the games had a better story and were more difficult but they are still some of the most fun RPGs ever for me.
Now you be able to replay the first Grandia though. A remaster is coming and will have 16:9 support and both psx and saturn sources will be used. I CAN"T WAIT!
@Codemaster Child of Light took out positioning though, so they turned a two dimensional battle system (turn bar and position) into a one dimensional system.
Great review, and I agree 100%. One thing that really irked me about this one was the fact that you never see 2 of the people after a certain point in the game until the end credits. Combat was amazing though, and is actually my favorite turn-based battle system of all-time.
This may be the most positive review i`ve seen for this game. Due to the heavy criticism it recieved by fans i never considered to play it. Maybe i should.
Truthfully, I understand the criticisms but I loved the fighting system so much that I sped right through the game. Definitely needed some distractions from the main storyline and they really could have implemented some awesome flight games or aviation-based mini games. Still worth a look in my opinion.
it's not that bad. but it could use being half as long. i got bored halway through, resumed playing and ended up selling my ps2 when i was in the last disc.
One of the best RPG combat systems around. Graphics still look decent up to this day, due to the semi-stylized aesthetic. My first Grandia game and i really enjoyed it
It's definitely nowhere near as bad as people make it out to be. True, I still prefer the first 2 games (I've never played Xtreme), but this one can definitely hold its own. Also, open world in a Grandia game?! *WHAT IS THIS SORCERY?!!*
Finished Grandia II last month. Just bought this on the PSN store via PS3. Excited to eventually jump into it. Loved the combat system in II and it sounds like it’s just as good if not better here. I’m honestly thankful for more linear games these days, so it sounds like an upside to me. Really appreciate this review. Thank you!
The battle system is great for maybe half the game, but stops being fun after that. The reason : skills quickly become overpowered, and since the enemies' difficulty seems balanced around your skills' power, you end up only using skills... ...So, after a while, the battles (this game's only strength, really) cease to be interesting, and as you finish the game, you can only think, because of the lame story : "wow, this was bad". I wouldn't be surprised if the game's development was rushed about halfway through. Game should be renamed "Downhill - the Game". Fitting for a game about planes crashing, when you think about it.
Great review, your use of language as a means of expression and emphasis came across as genuine, without ever becoming distracting nor contrived; and you chose a great range of high quality clips. You just earned another subscriber. Oh and did you use an emulator for the HD clips? Or is it from the PS3 Eshop release?
Great review! :) I have only just dipped my toes into the Grandia series. Actually, I'm playing the first one on my channel in a group Let's Play, taking hour long turns at playing through it. I'm loving it so far and can't wait to complete it, as well as get into the other games in the series. It really has a charm to it that I can't get enough of. While it is a shame that this one doesn't live up to the previous games in the series, but I'm sure I'd love it all the same. ;)
+RPGtourguide It just never really hits the stride that the first two managed to achieve. I vastly prefer the first title to the last two but any Grandia fan will enjoy 3 all the same. I'm going to check out your Let's Play, that's really cool.
I like games that people don't like. I think Chrono Cross is better than Chrono Trigger. I like FF13(The whole series) because it plays like Grandia II. IGrandia 2 is comedic as heck. I also liked Star Ocean: Integrity and Justice better than a Last Hope, but that's because the Battle System played like Star Ocean 3. So if the battle System out shines Grandia 2 and it's a little darker, but has some comedy still, then I know I made a good purchase today.
This was another awesome review man. I never heard of this series before and man this look very interesting. I think I will try this game. Again Awesome review man.
After trying this game, it was pretty fun - it wasn't great, but it's still worth giving it a try! It does have voice actors I recognize and love, and not to mention I liked the new changes to the combat, like the aerial finishers. There is ONE boss I loathed in this game.....the Mother Breed, that boss can go straight to hell.
Recommendations for other game with a similar well-made fighting mechanic? So many of the fights in this were so fun that I want to experience something similar or better instead of replaying it again.
Bought this last week (this didn't get a release here in Europe) and I would have to say this is better than Grandia 2. The story may not be so great as 1 or 2 but otherwise it's just as good as Grandia 1 and better than 2, better graphics, better battle system, harder. The voices aren't bad, like many people state they are. No Grandia had great voices (or at least all characters having great voices). The music is still great, though I am not a fan of the intro song either. Would have liked a more traditional Grandia theme. 8.5+/10 game right here. Buy it while it's still cheap, people. You may regret it in the next 5 years. They won't be releasing any more Grandias... (and btw Grandia Xtreme is not that bad. It's a 6.5/10 game, has a terrible story and some tacky graphics, but it's still a decent game).
***** Can't you create an American Psn account? I heard this was on the US's PSN. Or you could import the Ps2 original - I bought Grandia 3 from ebay UK, I have a modded Ps2 so I could play Ntsc Ps2 games.I cost me like 24 pounds all included (this was a few months ago).
true grandia 3(and 2) are nowhere near as bad as xtreme. I still recommend xtreme though for the battle system but there is no story/good characters compared to the greats The problem with this game for me is they develop the first characters so much..... and then get rid of them and then have the 2 mains run around by themselves until they shoehorn in 2 new characters because thats what grandia 1 did. but the difference is grandia 1 did it better
Honestly I prefer this and Xtreme over the first two entries in the series. But my only gripe is the unfinished locations in Grandia 3 that could've added more hours to the game.
My memory was of brilliant visuals, awkward writing and all three games with roughly the worst voice acting ever that marred the best combat system in JRPG history.
Yeah it's pretty horrible. In my opinion anyway. As a whole it all seems incredibly cheap and rushed, the animations are really bad with no life or charm at all. The level design really annoyed me too, again cheap lifeless 3D animation, and each new dungeon was the same thing over n over, It's hard to go into too much depth without any spoilers (not that it would be spoiling much anyway) but when you play through a few dungeons and fight their bosses you will see what I mean. While I think they are both made by the same studio I really doubt they were made by the same crew, it felt like a KOTOR 1 and 2 thing were they made a great game then another studio got their hands on it because it was a popular title and pumped out something just for the sake of it, without any of the care and effort the real team had put into the first. I was in love with the first though so I could have been expecting too much but I really don't think so.
Fuck off! Grandia 2 was a great game! Stop Bitching. Don't listen to Ben Williams, High Level Reviews. Grandia 2 is one the best Jrpgs to play. If your going to play it, play the dreamcast version.
i played the steam version that came out last year. i enjoyed the game exepct i felt the main villain was under developed and the world felt smaller then in the first game. but i still enjoyed the game even tho it's one of 4 games with the same plot set up [ ff10, tales of symphonia, and now i am setsuna.] give the game .

Even if I agree or disagree with your reviews, it doesn't matter quite so much because of how they're presented. Great work!
Grandia lowkey one of my all time favourites jrpg to this day. l adore the active trunbased battle system too!
I wish they'd get this on Steam
Another cool review. I knew nothing about Grandia 3 before this, now I wanna check it out. You're really good... more people need to see your stuff!
+drawcomics Holy crap, thank you man! Made my day.
The battle mechanics and battle animations are in a league of their own as far as ps1 ps2 era rpgs go. And that goes for grandia 1 2 and 3
Never played Grandia 3 and I might after this review. Good stuff, you got yourself a new sub.
Thanks! Grandia 3 was far better than I thought it would be.
I actually just started my first play through of grandia 2 on dreamcast and am loving tf out of it so far

Actually i never care about side content in JRPGs, but i rather enjoyed the character interactions and well written NPCs in gamearts games.
it's not that bad.
but it could use being half as long. i got bored halway through, resumed playing and ended up selling my ps2 when i was in the last disc.
It is honestly in my top 5 jrpgs and my favourite Grandia game. The visual design and battle system are both amazing!
The visuals look quite good still.
Also, great review!
pantcake True.
Great reviews! love your intro and theme music too. Recently subbed👍

Grandia 3 is probably the worst story wise but the best gameplay wise. The story isn't terrible but pales in comparison to the first two games.
completely agree.
I literally just picked this game up. I can’t wait to get into it. I got into the grandia franchise real late. And I’m upset
It was made without the series creator and really suffers for it.

I remember having fun with the battles all up til towards the very end of the game but lord the story left a horrible taste in my mouth

Yuki: ugh iam a pilot. I dont have time for this?
Me: Yeah . How you can learn such sword skill even Dragon slash without master? If you are a pilot?
the best battle system even to day it turn base really well done and dynamic
Try Legend of Legaia.... Your perspective will most likely change...
Quality review. Subbed.
thank you!

Both, pretty sure you can find this below 25$ and Suikoden III as well.
Love this game, too bad SE has the publishing rights and don’t seem to want to do anything with it.
Can we get a review for xenosaga?
Of course! Might take a bit to get to but I will certainly add it to my list.
my fav of the series.

Hi, can someone tell me the name of the games in the intro please ?
Grandia 2 is on steam I wish they would put 3 too
apparently this game was never published in Europe.. these things make me furious.
If you have ps3 you can create a ps3 USA account and purchase this game form the us psn store
@@MeWojak yes but in order to do that, I need also either a US credit card or a US PS Store card. This is why I have not done it so far.

coming to ps4
PS3, actually.

Ah love this game!
looks good

Alonso is literally the worst character in the game. Ive completed this game atleast 5 times and still skip his scenes.
Yeah he was a dirtbag for most of the game. Tho I give him props for helping Miranda let go of Yuki. Too bad they made him a liar right off the bat.
Please for the love of God, to all game devs, stop trying to make your games look like Disney. It's revolting.
jesus this game sux..
+ricardo gomes marques I actually really enjoyed the combat. The story on the other hand...
@@HighLevelReviews i remember playing just for the graphics, but the story omg
This game is trash they should have never made another after the creator died.
Grandia 2 was a piece of cheapy made trash. There was nothing good about that game, it was not a great. 1 was however, amazing.
