SouthEastern to Wandsworth Road and Clapham High Street

  • There's a once-a-day parliamentary train that leaves Victoria at 0550 in the morning, that is a South Eastern service that unusually stops at Wandsworth Road and Clapham High Street. I went and met Martin early in the morning, and off we went to ride the only train of the day that does this.
This is a parliamentary train, as otherwise there's no service between London and Wandsworth Road and Clapham High Street. (Regular London Overground services come to/from Clapham Junction). It was established a few years ago when the Victoria to London Bridge service (via Denmark Hill and Peckham Rye) was abolished.
The train is the 2Y06 Victoria to Ashford International: www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train...

    I like things like this.
I discovered a similar (ish) weird journey path the other day on the Tyne and Wear Metro.
There are two lines - yellow and green. There is a part of the route map where these coincide, allowing you to get off a green line train and board a yellow line train (or vice versa), but the vast majority of stations are simply either green only, or yellow only. Green line trains only serve green line stations and yellow line trains only serve yellow line stations. You cannot get on at a yellow station and get off at a green station without changing trains or vice versa.
    Or so I thought...
Once a day, incredibly early in the morning (before 5am), there is a train you can board at the green line only station, Regent Centre, which, instead of terminating at South Hylton (green line terminus), snakes off after Pelaw (which is served by both the yellow and green line trains) towards South Shields (yellow line only station).
This is the only way you can get on a train at a green line only station and alight (without changing trains) at a yellow line only station.
    Thought it was interesting.

That train is the 0458 off RGC (Regent Centre) and operates Mon-Fri. It's purely for operational reasons, because going out the west end of the depot is much easier than going out of the east end for trains going south so to get a train towards SSS (South Shields) early enough in the AM without beginning service earlier it must go via RGC otherwise it would be going out to BTN (Benton) and crossing over (which the rest of the following SSS trains do (with the exception of the ones that continue around The Coast), the first of which departs the depot roughly the same time as the one at RGC just it goes out of the east end and up to BTN before turning and heading back).
Also, as an aside this is the only time this happens in the printed timetable. However, this does happen during disruption to assist in turning trains around as RGC is a key time recovery station. This also happens whenever the line between SGF (South Gosforth) and LBN (Longbenton) is closed. With trains from SSS travelling to RGC and using the sidings there to turn around.

I’m kind of glad you brought this video up Geoff because I experienced some strange services before.
For example: Around towards the end of the summer or the beginning of autumn last year, on Saturdays I’ve often seen some Southeastern services at East Croydon that go to Hastings from Charing Cross which was unusual considering it is not shown at least as a limited service on the national rail map.
Southeastern can run some strange services every now and then

Also A rival rail company was allowed to build a line to Victoria from Kent provided it didn't stop at any station before it got there!! There are also abandonded stations at East Brixton, Camberwell, East st and Walworth road. Ironically the nearby road, Walworth road is the most congested in london!!!!

At least it keeps the line open for future use. Would have liked to try the train that used to exit from an east-bound bay at East Ham and looped around back westward through Stratford but the line is long gone now. Also, in the old Shoreditch station you could see through to the lines to Liverpool Street and I understand that they were connected at one time, so trains from Liverpool Street could run down through New Cross/Gate and on to the South Coast.

Geoff, when you showed the timetable entry of the 05:57 from Wandsworth Road to Clapham High Street, there was no indication that the train offered First Class accommodation. A great pity as it is the ONLY train of the day between those two points with First Class, so a potential revenue loss. In fact, I wonder if you could go back to Wandsworth Road and purchase a first class single to Clapham High Street? Great video as always. 😋

    • @DavidShepheard
      @DavidShepheard 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

I did that route the other way around, getting a late train from Waterloo to Wimbledon (from a high platform at Waterloo) and then spending ages going through Wandsworth Road, East Putney, Southfields and Wimbledon Park (non stop) before eventually arriving at Wimbledon so late that there were no passenger trains back to Southfields.
So not only did I go through my home station and not get allowed to get off, I also saw District Line trains arriving at Wimbledon and going back through Southfields without stopping.
The novelty of going through my home station on a National Rail train kind of got worn off by having to walk all the way home from Wimbledon (and hearing empty trains driving past me on the way).

This is the route that used to be covered by the Victoria - Peckham Rye - London Bridge train, isn't it? For a while they ran an irregular train out of Battersea Park over the rest of that route but now it seems they've scheduled a Kent train to stop at those two stations to provide the token service. Makes a bit more sense than stopping it at Battersea Park, I guess.

That train was brought in to replace the old Victoria to London Bridge via Peckham Rye service that was withdrawn back in 2012ish, when it was replaced by London Overground, the other bit of the missing link provided by London Overground with their Battersea Park terminators twice a day.

SE services use the atlantic lines through Clapham High Street & Wandsworth Road all the time, but they don't normally stop.
At least, they used to. I could be somewhat out of date with this.
I'm pretty sure they still use the low level lines in the Stewarts Lane area often; not sure about that outbound only slip though.
In fact, looking at Carto Metro suggests that any service using pl 1 or 2 at Denmark Hill _must_ go over Brixton and through Clapham High Street on the Atlantics. And I know that SE services often use pl 1 & 2 at Denmark Hill as I've alighted there many a time.

Been into Victoria from Maidstone East by the rare branch but only on one or two occasions.
A pub probably gone now was featured in a film which I think might have been a Michael Caine '80's or '90's spy thriller.

Years ago I used to live in Croydon and normally trains towards London stop next at Selhurst (to Victoria) or Norwood Junction (to London Bridge). However, I spotted on the timetable that very early in the morning there was a train that went to Selhurst and then to Norwood Junction which would be very odd. Sadly, I never found out whether that was just a printing error on the timetable or the train actually did that.

There is a direct line {skirting Selhurst depot) between Selhurst and Norwood Junction. As far as I know, no trains use it in passenger service these days, though in the 70's it was used regularly, as there used to be a "loop" service, out via West Norwood and Crystal Palace, back via Norbury, and vice-versa. It was used as a diversionary route one Sunday in about 1989.

The fact that there is no longer a direct regular service from these two stations to Victoria is a shame. You would have to take the overground to Clapham Junction then change, taking an absurd 25-30 minutes for what should be less than 10. Clapham High Street is not far from Clapham Common on the Northern Line, but Wandsworth Road is not near a tube station. It would only add a few minutes if the Victoria-Orpington or Victoria-Dartford trains stopped there.

Stanley T. you could build a passenger footbridge to Battersea Park.

They should do a special multipack of sharpies in the colours of the tube lines.

Would you be able to investigate Chiltern line to Baker street? You can find it marked on the Marylebone-Amersham-Aylesbury timetable.

If I remember correctly, trains between Victoria and Bromley South pass through Wandsworth Road and Clapham High Street anyway. Any ideas as to why they have to take a different curve of track if they call there as to when they’re just passing through?

they go past the station on a different line not going through any platforms an up fast line so they have to cross over onto the london overground line

You could also do Wolverhampton to Walsall, avoiding Birmingham. There's one train a week that does that, in that direction only - the 06:38 on a Saturday.

@@lukejohn1277 there's a good selection of other services that are scheduled to use that line up to just before Walsall. But it's the last bit, the leg of the junction that goes towards Walsall, that's unique. It's freight only apart from that service.
