Charlie Wilson tells a story (next to impossible to find the story) that there was an original recording/version of this song that was done in Ike Turner's studio. Apparently there was a dispute over payment for studio time, and Ike Turner "took" Stevie's master recordings for the song. According to Charlie, the original version of the song was not country themed, and supposedly was more R&B funk. I have not been able to find any evidence of such a track, but I would love to hear that. I know Stevie has tons of music that we will never get to hear. For instance there was a snippet of a more jazzy version 'I Love You Too Much' from the In Square Circle album that just recently surfaced on TH-cam. While I can understand why he chose the version that he ultimately released on that album, the snippet that I heard sounded much more timeless and catchy. I would love to get stranded in his music vault (with a sufficient supply of food & drink) for a month or year or two.
This song is one of my all time Stevie favorites for so many reason, one being that he artfully features Charlie Wilson on background vocals! At the time of Hotter Than July’s release, The GAP Band were ascending to new levels, Burning & Yearning if I may! 😊 What an amazing time for music!
It REALLY pisses me off when idiots say Stevie isn't actually blind, any fool can clearly see he's truly blind. I was a kid when this was out and I really liked that whole Hotter Than July album...
Questioning it is ignorant, ugly, ridiculous. So is mentioning those peoples’ idiocy here for no reason! It’s literally a conspiracy theory, that thousands of people have been keeping this secret for 60 years. THINK, just try thinking.
I tell them to go look at his "Send One Your Love" video from '79. Stevie has his shades off at certain points of the video and you can clearly see that his eyes aren't functional. That shuts down all that "He's not blind" nonsense.
When I close my eyes, I still have visions.... I am still able to see at night. Eyes closed, I have dreams.... I still see. I'm even able to see the same things that I see when my eyes are closed, as I do when my eyes are opened.

Wondering if that's the first Linn drum machine, the LM1. Maybe a prototype?!
Yes, looks and sounds like an LM-1 to me - it was released in 1980, and Stevie reportedly bought one of the first.
