Fun history fact, Chaviniac (the larger Marq that contains Gevaudan) is the family seat of the Marquis de Lafayette of American Revolution fame. He would often tell stories of pretending to hunt the Beast in the nearby forest as a child. (The narrator of this movie would likely have been playing his father)

"Deep Dive" has become like finding a $10 bill in my pocket... something that I should keep better track of but am utterly delighted to be surprised by.
Also, like "Sky Capitan", this is a movie that I didn't know was poorly regarded enough to warrant a Deep Dive... yet, I can still kinda see why.

It was so different and melded a bunch of different styles and genres so I really enjoyed it: Fairy Tale, Urban Legend, Science vs. Magic, Mystery, Historical Drama, Martial Arts, Political Intrigue, Romantic Triangle, Class and Culture Clashes, Vengeance Mission, etc.

  • @WrathOfTheGoth

"The Beast" gets capitalized because like "The Ripper" this is the shorthand by which it became known. Its full moniker is "The Beast of Gévaudan." This movie is very similar to "From Hell" in that it is weaving multiple legends, myths, and conspiracy theories about a real series of events (a series of brutal slayings in a specific region of France) into a single story. As with Jack the Ripper, the truth has sort of been lost to all the myth-making. And like "The Ghost and the Darkness" a large number of people really did lose their lives. Estimates range everywhere from 60 - 500 people slain by The Beast. The Beast might have been an actual animal, or an extremely prolific serial killer, or a government sponsored culling to keep the peasantry in line. A lion was one of the animals proposed as the beast (either somehow the last of a surviving European lion pride that should have gone extinct centuries ago or an escaped circus animal). As was a wolf, wolf-dog hybrid, or pack of wolves. The Beast of Gévaudan is also been claimed to have been a werewolf. It is a really interesting bit of history that more people should check out.

I saw both the French with English subtitles, and the dubbed version in a theater. In the 90’s, far more movies made it to theaters, even in smaller towns.
      Nowadays, it’s the same movies
playing at every theater, with a random place having older movies, and/or smaller productions.
I loved this movie, and it introduced me to Monica Belucci.

Ahah It's so cool seeing you expericen this movie as a french persone. It's a really special film for our french production, it was one of the few attempt to produce a movie "a la Hollywood" (but with a french touch bc we are chauvin ahah).
Funfact : The Beast of Gevaudant, is a french enigma, but a real story, there was a case of multiple "beast" attacks against humans. It was suspected to be wolf or dogs, but it did mobilised a lot of royal soldiers. But at the end nobody really know what or why people were attacked. Of course with time it kind of became kind of a folk tale.

I don't know of anybody who actually saw this as considering it 'bad'. If anything it was highly overlooked by an American audience that still had predispositions on what French made films were. It is an odd fusion of horror, martial arts action, and period drama that shouldn't work on paper let alone the big screen, and yet it does. What's even more insane is it is fairly accurate to historical accounts both in actual events and the wilder aspects are based on the popular conspiracy theories of its time. It is a truly unique experience that, as best I'm aware of, hasn't been done before or since.

Can't agree more. Mark Dacascos needs to be more thing. That man brings 110% to every role I've seen him in ever.

I'll have to go dig through my dvd's for this now and give it a re-watch. I remember my Wife (R.I.P.) and I really liking the movie at the time. The cinematography is outstanding as are the costumes as you all stated and aside from the meandering pace I quite liked the concept of taking an old French Folk Tale about a werewolf attacking the region and subbing in the Lion decked out in it's own funky armour. I gladly give it 3 and 1/2 AWOOOO's out of 5.

This movie feels like it picked a genre and a runtime out of a hat and just ran with it. "Mystery/Thriller? Four and a half hours (or however long)? Sounds good!"

I've always loved this movie. It felt so different than what I was watching at thr time. And as mentioned in the video, the costumes, the photography, the combat, and the color saturation is absolutely beautiful. I recall being thrown by the pacing but not caring enough to stop.

I saw this in the theater, and around 10 minutes into the movie - when it became clear that it would be fully subtitled - a man in the front of the theater stood up and shouted "I didn't come here to read!" and stormed out. That's my most distinctly American core memory.

oh man, love this movie. This should be fun.
It's loosely based on the Beast of Gévaudan, which also has a song about it by German power metal band Powerwolf.

Oh dang, I watched Salt for the first time earlier this year & it has one of the FUNNIEST scenes I've seen in a movie in a long time. It's not supposed to be funny, to be perfectly clear, but it would be a fun watch haha

Best part about this was it was recorded in French. So when they did the English dubbing Mark Dacascos did his own dubbing.
