I lived thru this era. This _Star Trek_ film was huge. It had a bigger impact on culture than the box office reflects. The lack of tons of action was a welcome break from the action filled films of the time that _Star Wars_ had spawned. The _Star Trek_ films of the that time were like contemplative breaks between the roller coaster _Star Wars,_ Rambo, etc. films. The twist, that the enemy was something from us, come back as a near god, was also an important break from the norm.

My father’s cousin (Peter Krikes) was one of the screenwriters on Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home aka “The One With Space Whales”. I grew up periodically hearing the crazy stories about that film’s production. Apparently Peter and Leonard didn’t get along and disagreements led to Peter being removed from the project, only to be brought back later on to fix script issues Leonard and the screenwriting crew were having trouble resolving. All in all a crazy film, but I do love the final result.

I gotta say... I took a break from Filmjoy. I once had a commentary (welcome or not) about how I felt Mikey was eating up way too much camera time in his latest videos. In my opinion we (or at least I) came here for the informative style of film review, more enjoying the documentary style editing, versus having to watch a video that was 50% Mikey acting on screen, and 50% actual information about the property being presented. I was happy to see this in my cue. Because I love Star Trek. But what made me even happier, was it seems Mikey found a really amazing balance of getting some screen time, and his scenes actually being a TREAT, versus feeling too long and forced in your face. I don't make these kind of videos, so I don't want to be overly critical, but as a consumer, I enjoyed what I loved in the initials about Filmjoy... the focus on the films. And this honestly I think is Mikey at the top of his game. This was spectacular. I cannot overstate not only what a great piece of work this is, but how it also honors Star Trek, and what it represents. Mikey's prologue quite literally had me in tears. So Bravo, sir, BRAVO. Well done. If we were not in an economic crisis and I was not so broke, I would immediately be going to support you on Patreon. But rest assured, keep operating on this level of genius, and I promise once things begin to level out that I will happily support. You deserve it. I feel almost like every Star Trek fan should enjoy this film. I hope more people see it. Cheers.

I have always loved these movies. Ok, not really a fan of V, but love the others. TMP is beautiful and immersive in a way that's never been captured since. II was just a whale of a ride, punch after punch after punch, gritty and raw, and arguably the pinnacle of Start Trek. III was quirky and odd, but somehow quite satisfying as a transition story (and surprisingly heavy emotionally), and IV was just a fun romp with our beloved crew, and a welcome lighter moment after the darkness of the previous two films. V was...it had redeeming qualities, but overall just didn't work for me.
And then VI, to finish the saga off in spectacular fashion. Man, that one is a banger, both from an action/cinematic point of view, and from a personal/philosophical standpoint, and was an honorable send-off for the crew. Legendary stuff...from such humble beginnings...

I was happy to see the photo at 5:39. Might be hard to spot but I see my friend Eric, who sadly passed away a few years ago, dressed as the Penguin. It was surprising to see him here, but at the same time heartwarming. He loved Comic Con so much.

I'm only 15 minutes in so far, but needed to make a comment. I was 11 when "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" came out and I remember going to see it with my dad and my brother. Maybe because of my age, certain things remain special to me about the film, especially V'GER. To this day, whenever I hear anything about either Voyager I or Voyager II, my inner 11 year old screams V'GER and I get sappy smile on my face. I can totally appreciate that aspect of the film forever.

Just IN TIME!!! I was going squrrelly self isolating. A couple of things. Christian Slater is in the last one because his mother was the casting director, and he called in a favour. Who doesn't want to be in a Trek film? On the first day of the first year of Andromeda, they brought Majel Roddenberry by to christen the set. It was a big thrill to (sort of) meet her, even though Andromea was mostly a pile of hot garbage. I think you should have mentioned the Star Trek animated series, complete with original cast members doing their voices, if you were going to do a timeline of this. Beyond that, this was an awesome way to spend an hour and I am incredibly happy I spent it with you.

I don't think of IV: The Voyage Home as "the one with the whales." I think of it as the one where the core cast of TOS gets to have a fun time in my beloved San Francisco / Bay Area. And I will always love it for that. I somehow managed not to know the Time After Time connection before. I loved that movie also for that, but I love The Voyage Home even more, because it's just such a fun time.
And just a reminder - once this lockdown is over and it's safe to travel, San Francisco and the greater Bay Area is still a great place to have a fun time in.

My mom is going to love this series once she has a chance to watch it. She is a huge fan of your show and Star Trek. She has been a Trekkie since the show first aired. ST and the news were the only things she could watch without it counting as "TV time".
She would add that part of the fear with the death of Spock was that no one was certain if Leonard Nimoy would come back.
To this day, when someone plays "Amazing Grace" on the bagpipes, my mother starts tearing up and people ask, "Oh, I'm sorry. Did you lose someone?"
    My Mom, "Yeah... SPOCK!!!"
People respond, "Didn't he come back?"
    Mom: "IT WAS VERY EMOTIONAL!"

I personally really like Search for Spock. I think what draws me to it is that in a lot of 'retcon films' that bring characters back, they often don't show the sacrifice that it takes and thus those stories don't earn their payoff. In SFS, Kirk loses everything for Spock: his career (as far as we knew), the genesis planet, his son and most of all our favourite starship. I personally will never forget those immortal words:
'My god Bones... What have I done?'
'You did what you always do; cheated death and turned it into a fighting chance to live'.

'The Motion Picture' was a big pop culture event in 1979. There were many casual Star Trek watchers who went to the film and most of them didn't return to the franchise until the 4th film (if at all). The box office for 'Kahn' was inflated due to fans' multiple viewings.

38:25 Talk about "Whoa", Blossom's kitchen is also the Pinciotti's kitchen from That 70's Show. The Pinciottis are the next-door neighbors of the Formans. Red Forman is played by Kurtwood Smith, who plays the President of the Federation in Undiscovered Country.

Holy shit, Mikey! Thank you for tackling Star Trek. I've been a fan of it all my life (25 odd years) andyour videos on it have only made it more endearing to me, especially in this uncertain, confusing and I confess SCARY time in my life. In an attempt to get my shit back together as if I know exactly how to do so, you helped me remember that even the folks who created my much beloved universe found themselves in this very same boat. NO ONE KNOWS WHAT THEY'RE DOING. I guess I kind of forgot that somewhere along the way. I'm probably gonna started singing that aloud whenever life gets me down now. I blame you. Lol
    Stay safe my friend.
