  • Cree Studios 1850's Melodeon Restoration with soundtrack...Peter Cree plays the instrument he has restored from the ground up. Both Melodeons and Reed Organs were very popular though Melodeons had a much more primitive bellows operation. For anyone who needs restoration of these or other instruments, its difficult to find craftsmen willing and able to take these on. if you want more information contact peter@creestudios.com. Cree Studios services are nationwide.

I own an 1869 Philpott & Camp Melodion I am restoring now in fact, the video looks good though it seems to me like it takes a LOT more pumping than I visualise your smaller Melodion should take to get the level of sound from it heard in the video. I've seen a few Melodion videos, one by Artis who demonstrated her 1864 instrument, and she was playing big chords and had the stops on and it didnt look like she was pumping as much as what I hear in this video to get that level.
Maybe your 1850 instrument is what Ive seen called "portable" has a much smaller winding system and thus limited resources in the first place.

Yes. It took too much effort and came as a pile of sticks wrapped in twine. It folded up and was potable. My first melodeon restoration.

Wow you made it so beautiful! I just happened into one and am so curious about it and hope to get it to work one day.

May I ask you for some advice? I've acquired on of these (Prince & Co. pt 1845), it appears to be in very intact shape, except no sound. The bellows and wind chest to exterior touch feel intact, except that I can see/feel that the (papered canvas?) top back edge of the wind chest is unglued from the top back of the box, thus letting air flow out there. Wondering if hide glue should be attempted here? The airchest seems very intact except some surface wear on the corners, and wondering if I should reinforce this with some historically appropriate material (varnish or glue? Paper as it seems to be coated with? I hesitate to do anything that makes it less flexible and needs to be undone for a proper fix). Thanks very much for any advice!
