When it comes to women in The Sopranos, there are certainly plenty that we see throughout the series. Whether it's Tonys family members in Carmela and Meadow, his insane and not to be trusted family members in Janice and Livia, or the countless of mistresses' that Tony has on the side, they can all be viewed in different lights and negatively thanks to being connected to an individual like Tony Soprano. But there's one female character on the series that never got herself involved with Tony Soprano, and she was praised for it throughout the series and made her one of the series' most likeable female characters. And this is the character of Charmaine Bucco. But what made her this way and why was she so completely against the mafia and everything it stood for with an individual like Tony Soprano at the helm?

Girls like that tend to have guys falling for them with one conversation , nvm the onslaught of back and forth attention Artie was working with. Not saying she was encouraging it, it's a byproduct of a pretty girl and friendly personality.

Charmaine was a smart woman and nobody's fool. She had Tony and Carmelo figured out from the get-go. Kathrine Narducci is a very good actress.
Absolutely the best wife in the series. She was a business partner with her husband and was satisfied with a life of hard work and a moderate income while the people around her had more--but were morally compromised due to the thing of theirs.
and although it came off as nagging--her constant insistence to Arthur that he not get too involved with his mob friends probably kept him alive.

She was totally realistic and could tell that Artie at times kind of envied Tony and the lifestyle of some of the mob guys. She knew though how things would be likely to ultimately end if Artie got involved with Tony or the mob on any sort of business venture. She was a lot less naive than Artie. And she had a nice rack too!
Honestly though, she and Artie had dated/known each other since high school. They were married and also had kids together. And they worked together. It's easy to see how it could all become too much at some point being together so much with one person.
I feel like Charmaine was portrayed at times on the show like a moody and controlling bitch but she obviously had to be the level headed one being married to Artie. And she was not amused or impressed with the mob guys who frequented their restaurant.
I like to think at some point she tells Artie the same thing she told Carmella in the exact same way. Artie needed to be taken down a peg.
Honestly I think most people would like to be in Artie’s position. Being “friends” with mob guys seems to have a lot of benefits and less downsides then being affiliated has to offer.

@STONESGAM She was smart because she knew Artie had weaknesses that the mob could exploit. His personal insecurity would have been a tougher thing to use against him, much harder than Davey Scatino’s gambling addiction was in that mess, but Visuvio could have been just another bust-out if Charmaine didn’t keep Artie on a short leash.
I respected Charmaine a lot, shes the one character that seems to understand the negative impact of having mobbed up people around. Artie was so desperate to be involved he couldn't see the monsters in front of his eyes.
Artie thought mobsters were respected and admired and he wanted the same. But they weren't respected, they were feared, not the same thing, and not something to admire.

Charmaine didn't tell Carmella before she was treated like a servant. It was after. Carmella really thought butter didn’t melt in her mouth.
I can't stand Carmella. She acts all superior and religious but ultimately does a whole lot of nothing. The only reason she's rich is because of who she married, but she goes around acting like old money.

Her mother was a self hating Italian and her father wasn't a strong figure. She ended up marrying a caricature of an Italian male, Tony.

I don't understand your comment. You're saying the only reason she is rich is because of who she married, implying that the money she has wasn't earned. Then you said but she still acts like she came from old money. Well old money isn't earned either. With old money she is rich because she was born into the right family.
I misunderstood Charmaine at first. I thought she was a bit of a shrew and I couldn’t stand her. But upon further reflection, I began to understand and admire her character. She’s incorruptible and one of the few people on the show with any kind of conscience. Kudos to Katherine Narducci for the way she made this character believable and sympathetic.
Charmaine saved Artie from being destroyed by the NJ mob. He would have ended up being Davey Scatino's mental hospital roommate if Charmaine didn't draw a hard line with him getting into any business with Tony.
I think Tony always had a soft spot for Artie and he would’ve had to fuck yo way more than Davey to really get on Tony’s bad side.

Tough and a woman of integrity...she kept artie on the straight path...not easy by the people that were in his orbit.

Charmaine was one of the very few people who actually had virtue. She’s awesome in my book.
Also another thing to point out. In the dreams Tony has as Kevin, it’s referred that this is what his life would be like if he hadn’t join the mob. There’s a scene where Kevin is on the phone with his wife, and it’s clearly Charmaine’s voice and they have two kids, a daughter and son.
Given their past history, I believe that Tony and Charmaine were meant for each other, but it was the life that drove them apart. No way could Charmaine allow herself to be with a mobster, but Tony needed someone who could. Someone who didn’t care about the side girlfriends, the blood money, violence, etc. He found that in Carmella.
To add, it’s the negative traits Tony has that Carmella explicitly found attractive. She liked the bad boy vibe Tony gave off. It’s mentioned that she fell in love with his temper, strength, and intimidation.
If you remember, she chose Tony over a guy who was going to inherent a prestigious/wealthy grocery store chain. (Which is also why her mother never liked Tony).
Overall, it’s interesting to see how Charmaine and Carmella are complete opposites in these aspects. Charmaine chose morality over materialism. She actually goes through and is able to divorce her husband and has skills to work on her own. She’s actually independent. She’s able to keep Artie in check, She’s only with Artie because she wants to be, unlike Carm who has to be with Tony. She is everything Carmella wishes she was and more.

Maybe I was imagining things, but in ‘Many Saints of Newark’ I though the younger version of Carmela was very attracted to the bad boy young Tony Soprano. I don’t think the Carmela character had any lines in the film, and that’s too bad. If there are any more prequels, I would love to see the development of Tony and Carm’s relationship. It’s funny how, as a true person of substance, even though charmaine didn’t care about all the designer clothes she still looked better than the other women.
Minor correction: Tony wasn't in on the credit card fraud that Benny and the waitress pulled on Vesuvio, to the point where Tony admonishes Benny for the stunt after Benny threatened to kill Artie for jumping him outside of his house.
In any case, great video! Charmaine is kind of an unsung supporting character, but she's fantastic in every scene she's in, and is vital to keep that outsider's perspective in a show where it's easy to sympathize with hardened criminals and killers cuz of how much airtime they get.
Yeah and Tony didn't give Artie the tickets so they could blow up the restaurant, it was so junior didn't have his hit done in the restaurant, they blew it up cause Artie turned down the tickets
That showed what kind of easy mark Artie was. Criminal mastermind Benny Fazio almost ruined him.
Also, Carmela’s treatment of Charmaine wasn’t “revenge” for Charmaine admitting that she and Tony slept together. Carmela didn’t even find out about that until after the silent auction. There’s quite a few mistakes in this video.
Also, he calls Jean’s twin sister “Mrs. Cusamano”, which makes no sense, as that’s Jean’s married name. Joan wouldn’t have the same last name as her sister.
Benny wouldn't have chosen Vescuvio if it wasn't a spot he already frequented and met the hostess.
Some people don’t like Charmaine telling Carmela about her and Tony’s past relationship but I thought it was awesome, screw her for demeaning her as the “help”.

She still looks great too ... 12 years after the Sopranos ended, she was in the Irishman , looking damn near the same. Great talent , great figure and a pretty face. We're lucky to have her.

Charmaine did what any good wife does- she tried to keep her husband from making stupid decisions. Sometimes you need someone with an outside perspective to enlighten you to what is really going on with one of your friendships or associations. Though far from perfect, Artie was basically a decent guy who was slightly envious of the lives of his criminal childhood friends, which made him more susceptible to manipulation. Char could see this when he could not. Sadly, of all the characters in the show, Arthur was probably Tony's only true friend in the entire show- one of the only guys who wasn't kissing his ass because he was the boss or wanting anything from him.
She was a btich to Artie, but did have a strong moral backbone. I would go as far as saying she is one of the few characters in the series who isn't a scumbag.
Charmaine was my favorite character on the show. People that don’t like her are seeing the show wrongly. She was the only one to see what Tony and the mob stood for. Destruction and she was never romanticized by their lifestyle. She was smart, tough, independent and honest. Unlike everyone else on the show. Even Melfi, a law abiding citizen and decent person got swayed in by Tony at one point.

Great video, but I think you miss one thing. Charmaine is against the Mafia, but, tellingly, she has something in common with mob guys--she's really, really good at breaking balls. She might be the only outsider who's able to make fun of Tony, Paulie, and Silvio to their faces: "Two guys over there, at that table, yeah? I think they're FBI." She also presumably had been attracted to Tony in high school, and she was attracted to Artie, who throughout his life was drawn to the mob lifestyle, to the point of marriage. She's so relentlessly negative about the mob because in their world, it is so fascinating and magnetic, that one has to constantly be negative to avoid being drawn into it.

In the end, Charmaine won didn't she? She was still alive & healthy, had her business, her family & her husband. Was not in trouble with the law & never indicted. And she had no enemies coming after her. The rest are losers, and that's hard for us loyal Sopranos fans to come to grips with. Look how they ended up. Dead, feeble, in a coma, in prison, indicted, facing trial, or always having to watch their backs.

If anyone made a clean cut from being so close to the mob, it was Tony's kid sister Barbara. Unfortunately, all her screen time would be shorter than a video made about her.
Charmaine rocks. She's beautiful and strong. But you're way off in saying that Charmaine was polite to Carmella. She totally told Carmella off and made it clear she thought Carmella was an immoral user. First, she implies Tony isn't very good. Then she says "you made your choice and I made mine. I'm good with mine." I thought that was the most beautiful telling off I ever saw. Charmaine rocks.
All I know is the actress who played Charmaine is the most beautiful woman on the whole show...by miles. She is also one of the smartest characters and the only one with enough vag to talk shit to the mobsters while laughing at them to their face. Brilliant.
Charmaine's attitude toward Tony was completely reasonable, but I think he gets a bad rap when it comes to being a bad influence on Artie. Artie was a total rube. He was easily taken advantage of by anyone, especially pretty girls. All the major bad things that happened to him over the course of the series would have happened whether he'd ever met Tony or not. I'd say that Tony got him out of twice as much trouble as he got him into.
I'm pretty sure his restaurant would've never blown up had he not met Tony.
It was still an Italian restaurant in a mob neighborhood. Junior's planned hit could have easily still happened there. I never understood why that would have been worse than a fire, but that was the general consensus of the guys in the show

When I was younger I thought Charmaine was a naggy b*tch. Now older, I realize she was just a strong Italian baddie and Artie was lucky to have a ride or die like that. She was always trying to get him to do what was best for the restaurant and their family. Artie could of had an easier ride if he had just listened to her common sense more and stop trying to dip his toes into the underworld
Charmaine was such a great character. Artie had a longtime friendship with Tony and while he did a decent job of keeping a safe distance from Tony's business dealings, he stepped over the line a couple of times. Charmaine kept Artie grounded and made sure her husband never got too involved with the mafia guys. She also was completely unimpressed with Tony, which drove Tony nuts since most women were drawn to him. By the end of the series, Artie seemed to be finding his roots again (The great scene where he was looking at his old family cook books in the episode he feuded with Benny) and he and Charmaine looked like their future was solid.
She's the only thing that kept Artie from getting his ass in real trouble and she almost didn't succeed. The Frech dude scam episode was proof of this. Imagine going to Ralph to help you get money. Oofah.

Melfi is the personification of the viewer. Someone who is duped by Tony, intereted in his life and sees him weekly.

By making a stand instead of continuing to treat him is her making a choice, meaning she has some emotional connection to the subject and cannot be considered as the personification of the viewer, but i agree that it would make the most sense seeing as they see each other on a regular baiss
@@gibanicarstolar2149 You don't have to agree with only Melfi. She finally realized Tony was furthering himself as a criminal through therapy because his colleagues brought it up and she studied the literature that supports it. It is literally spelled out to Melfi and the viewer.

Ironic because I hear Katherine's dad was connected. But we needed the Buccos, because people wouldn't realise not every Italian American is mob adjacent without them because this show as big as it was gave a lot of exposure to the culture to people who might not have ever crossed the tunnel

My high school was actually used for filming in season 6 (Montclair high school). One of my best friends has the surname “Gambino”. Every single day of her life, she was questioned by some ignorant random weirdo about whether or not her dad is a mobster. She found it infuriating and embarrassing, but for some reason, people thought it was a funny thing to joke ad speculate about.

I really like how they wrote so many of these characters. Its so atypical of so many shows with only a handful that I can think of that do anything like this.
So many of the worst people on this show are still charismatic, superficially charming, complicated, cool, interesting, etc, but those who eschew their racism, sexism, homophobia, willingness to hurt people, predatory behavior, lack of self/impulse control, who have genuine decency and want to do right by others, etc, are portrayed as wet blankets, nags, squares, boring, and sometimes a little disingenuous and maybe hypocritical.
Chase has expressed many times that he was unhappy at how uncritical some of the audience was even going as far as having whole episodes ("University" and the way Tracee is treated like crap by T when shes alive, abused by everyone including Sil, and eventually killed by Ralph while people like Paulie are more offended thay he "disrespected the Bing") that try to snap the audience back into reality as to who these people were. But he also didn't hesitate to show unethical behavior by civilians to show it wasn't just a mafia thing.
But in writing these characters this way he did a great job at showing that the better way to move ain't always glamorous or easy but in the end its usually worth it for most people without universally condemning the crooks and gangsters or the people who empower em or reifying the civilians as beacons of ethics.
She is a prime example of one of those people who come off as annoying and nagging at times but is almost always, if not always, right. It's not glamorous, its not easy, she's not special or a great person otherwise, it just is. Most shows wouldn't have characters like this even today.
Charmaine had the strongest backbone on the show. Salute.
Charmaine would be the closest to David Chase's "voice" in the show. Closest to the opinions he voices in interviews, and the message he is trying to convey about his characters.

Also, Artie was NOT offered the cruise tickets in exchange for blowing up his restaurant. That’s absurd.
You also refer to Joan as “Mrs. Cusamano”, when that’s Jean’s married name. Jean’s twin sister wouldn’t have the same last name as Jean and her husband, Dr. Cusamano.
And how on earth could you characterize Dr. Melfi as “selfish”? There’s sooooo many careless mistakes in this video. 😏
Lastly, as someone else in the comments pointed out, Tony was NOT part of Benny Fazio’s AmEx fraud scheme at Vesuvio. That was all Benny and Martina, and Tony actually admonished Benny for it later on.
For the most part, The Sopranos loves showcasing how the mafia grants these guys inexplicable wealth compared to the common man. A good example of this is Johnny and Tony driving around in a Maserati while Sal Vitro is forced to mow their lawns on comp. However, Charmaine is the best counter to all of that. Even though neither her nor Artie are perfect, you can tell that she's always been content. And that's something that none of the mob guys, despite raking in millions, can't say.

If you get through the mafia, you're going to have to get your hands bloody, and that might end up with you being in jail or dead. The Sopranos showed the stressful side of the mob more than any other mob show/movie. But even in the legit world, if you make that money through legit business, there's a lot of stress, headaches, agony, misery. The smartest among us are those that realize that early, grab a 9 to 5, find a good spouse, raise some kids, and sit the stresses of the world out. The extra money is rarely worth it.
Every husband like Artie needs a wife like Charmaine. Us fellas need to be grounded in reality most of the time.

Charmaine was a great character played by a great actress. One correction, Jeanie Cusomanio was nit tied to the mob in any way.
The amount of bs that she had to deal with that because of the stupid things that arsehole Artie was doing and even disrespecting her by constantly simping for his waitresses right in front of ger face trying to play "hide the baguette" lol.
He did not deserve a good woman like that.
I like how she wasn't intimidated by Artie flirting with those younger ladies (who ultimately scammed him). She could see through that, and we shouldn't be surprised if a great person enters our life and out of nowhere, money is mentioned (a sign of a con artist or shady individual). She was a voice of reason and somewhat of a breath of fresh air in a show with characters that are far from honourable. I can't remember the ending of her and artie lol. Truly, she is a great character. In a series about bad guys, you need legit good guys to balance the show just right, she and Melfi did a good job.

I think that Charmaine is a fabulous and alluring character not primarily because of her bangin bod: she’s down to earth and has clarity, a good head on her shoulders so Artie is willing to take tough love and follow her advice

Not much to uncover here. She and the show were crystal clear on why she didn’t like the mob life.
She was a master player with the Mafia, similar to the priest who tried to shake down Paulie for more money. She accepted the Mafia at Vesuvios to a certain point (I wonder how much she was really against their coming, the prestige must have been great even though Tony rarely paid his bill). Her getting married to Tony or any of the Alpha Males of that North Jersey universe would have been catastrophic (great sex but loads of fighting ), so she smartly picked a man who has always been emasculated by the mob. She did get the last word against Tony and Carmela, and yeah, very petty, but pettiness is power in that environment. It helps that she is incredible looking and has a way with words.
