"A guy like that and my mother wore him down to a little nub. He was a squeaky little gerbil when he died." This is Tony Soprano, the same individual and son of the infamous Johnny Boy Soprano, describing his father in the pilot episode of The Sopranos. But what did Tony always mean by this infamous quote? Wasn't Tony always bragging to Doctor Melfi, his friends, and anyone that would listen, about how tough, proud, and a great father figure and role model Johnny Boy Soprano was? Or was this all a mirage that Tony had thought his dad was the entire time? Was Johnny Boy Soprano a great dad after all? Or was he just a selfish mafioso. In conclusion, he is basically responsible for giving us the narcissistic, sociopathic, and heinous murderer that we all love in Tony Soprano!

Johny Boy was one of the main characters of the series, despite not being alive, he is mentioned in most of the episodes. There's a minor overlooked line of dialogue that I don't see a lot of people bringing, when Fran tells a story to Tony she mentions that she was smoking but Tony realizes that the time that story happened was when his father already was diagnosed of his lung emphysema. He tries to call her out but Frans tells Tony that she asked if she should stop and Johnny boy said no, Tony notes that even Livia stopped her smoking once Johnny Boy got diagnosed. Even when Johnny Boy got closer to his death bed, he wouldn't stop coming to Fran and she probably has more to do with his death than Livia since I doubt she even asked Johnny Boy if she should stop smoking since she's a bullshitter. Tony probably misconstrued the situation as Livia wearing him down. He spent most of his time away from his family having sex with a golddigger, and while Livia was no saint at least she did care about Johnny Boy to stop smoking when he got sick, and Fran didn't.

You’re missing the part where Livia is a horrid person to be around and Johnny is a human being. Who wouldn’t want to escape from his wretched abusive wife, even if it’s just temporarily? I don’t condone cheating but I understand why someone would do that. It’s not like Livia was a terrific wife and he was just sleeping around. She was a cancer to the soul, both emotionally and spiritually considering she didn’t even let him leave the mob life. It’s not valid to blame Johnny when he’s trapped in a relationship with a monster.

@@ExternusArmy Oh, poor Johnny Boy Soprano. He was such a loving father who was never around, used his daughter as a front for a racket, and saw the potential of Tony being in the mob because he didn't flinch when he saw him cutting up Mr. Satriale's finger. At least Junior stuck around with Tony, played catch and even talked to him about sports. Johnny Boy could only spew out fake fatherly spiel (When he was around) and even when Tony got in the mafia, he never knew where he stood with his father. Oh, but I guess assigning him his first murder is proof Johnny Boy really did love his son. For how much of a shit father Tony was, he was way better than Johnny Boy.

Not necessarily true. It’s stated by experts that Livia would be diagnosed with narcissism and anti-personality disorders. Conditions that a person usually is born with or develops at a very young age. Chances are she was already like that and for someone like Johnny, that’s a perfect fit. Not an excuse for how Johnny treated her, but she most likely was already like that by the time she met him and it just got worse.

Great video. Two more things: First, Johnny Boy and Livia kept the existence of Ercole hidden from Tony, even to Junior's surprise, which shows the lack of acceptance for disability and mental illness that Tony must overcome. Second, in The Many Saints of Newark, we see Johnny Boy treat Uncle Junior with obvious disdain, contributing to Junior's prickly defensiveness, which led him to murder Dickie and later try to kill Tony. Arguably, with a different Johnny, season 1 of The Sopranos would have been very different.

    1. Why is it odd (your word) that Tony grew up to be like his father? In my life experience, the apple usually doesn't fall far from the tree. 2. That said, Tony had a wee bit more character than his father (he was a pretty good parent), which is how it usually goes, meaning the next generation. 3. Duh! Tony had a good relationship with his uncle because Johnny Boy was dead! We have no way of knowing how Tony and Johnny would have been had Johnny lived. Come on! 4. It is understandable how everyone idolized Johnny Boy after he died. That is also how the world works. Sorry, but your synopsis of Johnny Boy is lame.

I didnt care for the false racism that the movie added to the history of the scene. Many Saints was not realistic in many aspects. One of them is the brutal racism they portray virtually all Italians to have towards blacks and hispanics. Perhaps the creator experienced a different reality than many did, but racism wasnt running rampant in the Italian communities any more than it ran through every other segregated community of the time. That was the way people chose to live. Italians lived in Italian communities by choice, Polish did the same with their fellow Polish, the same with Russians, and minorities. Blacks chose to live with blacks. Many African immigrants chose to live around other African immigrants rather than african american communities. Hispanics were divided too. Mexicans with Mexicans, Puerto Ricans to their own, Salvadoran Guatemalan and Honduran in their own areas separate from other hispanics. This was the way all people throughout history chose to live. Its ingrained in our nature to seek out others that are as much like us as we can find and stick together. Hell, its still alive and kicking in Africa. Look at the different tribes who choose to live in their tribes instead of mingling with other tribes and creating a community of diversity. Just because Italians stuck together doesnt make them racist. It made them human beings who acted like human beings. As far as the unprovoked violence towards blacks on a grand scale at the hands of Italians, this was not the case for a substantial majority of Italians. I am not Italian, but i feel like someone should be sticking up for Italians in this department because many people who saw the film believe that it was an accurate portrayal of history when it was absolute fiction. Chase knew it would be taken as cannon when he added it to beef up the drama of the movie. I feel like it was done in bad taste. Those who lived that lifestyle were guilty of many things, Chase did not need to fabricate more immorality to burden them further. It didnt need to be done. If shock and awe was what he was looking for, then he should have done it tactfully with something a bit more true to life. God knows the criminal element of all nationalities has more than enough juicy vice that can be portrayed in film without having to fabricate untruths. Sorry for the novella, i just dont like dishonesty in film when a film maker is representing an entire group of people and it paints them in an unfair way to such an extreme. Especially when the film maker knows that people will think it was all true. He knows that he portrayed that life with such accuracy in the show that anything he put in the film would be accepted as truth by the viewers. Most people disliked the film because they didnt care for the storyline and felt it was boring and predictable, as opposed to my gripe with it.

I do not think Tony automatically looked up to Uncle Junior or Dick Moltisanti more than his father, but remember there were long stretches where Johnny was away in prison, so during those times, it's understandable that Tony would get influenced by those guys in Johnny's absence. (As for teenage Tony, it's common for young guys to stop getting along with their own fathers during those years.)
Johnny in MSON seems more distant to Tony, because it's also not like the stuff in the series which is just Tony's *memory* of events, and memories can be tainted.

What would’ve happened had he lived? That’s the REAL question. Imagine how he would’ve dealt with Janice dating Richie Aprile. Would Johnny have treated A.J. better than he treated his own son like Livia? How about Meadow, what would Johnny have thought of her, his granddaughter? It’d have been interesting.

I’m going to go out on a limb and assume in my early 30s had more emotional development than Tony had at say 40 something during the series. As an adult my memories are all I have of my father in his early 30s and on. A dysfunctional family with criminal ties I also have. As I grew and developed, I seen my father differently, no worse or better, just different. There were many coping mechanisms in lies that developed from childhood, every so often in my own journey of growth I came upon little realizations. I see this a lot in Tony. His sessions with Melfi and the little growth opportunities in between sessions that would inevitably arise.
