Like many of you, I have a morning ritual that includes prayer and meditation. For many years, part of that ritual has been praying that "all beings be free of suffering" -- which is a traditional Buddhist loving-kindness mantra. However, over the course of this practice, I realized that my conceptualization of suffering -- and prayer and God -- was superficial and immature. To liberate people from suffering, we will all need to address the root cause of the problem.

This is outstanding, I knew I liked you for a reason...just discovering Buddhism in depth, my morning prayer and meditation has been for a different reason (I'm a member of the largest selfless group in the world that nobody initially wants to be a member of)
But truly helping others suffer less is how I stay alive, it is how I am happy and have a fulfilled life.

I was bullied as a child. Sx abused as a kid. Abandoned by my mother. I always did my best to be optimistic and helpful. Joined the fire service to help. I met a nurse who turned out to be a narcissist. She eventually caused me to have a seizure. She then disappeared. I'm still struggling to get out of this hole. I watch this channel and every upload. However, life is hard and brutal. We could all do with spreading love and kindness. Of which you do. So sincere thanks for your efforts and time. Much love from the UK ❤️.

I was clinically diagnosed with depression, I had two failed suicide attempts until I finally understood that there is nothing worth suffering for. I understood the psychological pain that made me suffer was actually self inflicted by the way I viewed the world. I didn't meditate, but I trained my mind to have positive thoughts, especially in the morning, when I was waking up. After some time of blocking my negative thoughts and replacing them with more pleasant ones, I gradually became a happier person. Now I have many friends, I feel normal and I am not married or intend to. Ahh, life is good people, I tell you! Always look at the bright side..

That's so good you found a way out. Any other info that could help out? I don't like taking advice from people that have never been there and felt REAL depression. Too many people telling others to " Chin up" "it will get better" some how magically I assume.

  • @tonybernard4444
    @tonybernard4444 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I have a tolerance for pain as long as I understand it. I had kidney surgery and they poked me through the belly 5 places, including a four inch cut up the middle, and wow did that hurt when I moved. But I didn't waste time with pain meds, because I understood that getting stabbed 5 times is going to hurt while the wounds heal. Back spasms and sciatica on the other hand hurt pretty good, but I was angry about it because I didn't understand what was going on or how to get better.
Similarly, I've had anger issues and outbursts for minor stresses. It turns out I have some unresolved issues from childhood, and not recognizing where the real pain was coming from caused my suffering to magnify. As I work things out, my stress and anxiety are going away; my suffering is relieved.
That said, there are comments about people and pets dying, injury and illness, and that suffering isn't avoided with a morning prayer or whatever. This is real pain, however, and it's supposed to hurt; the root cause is external and obvious. By getting our affairs in order, we can avoid the daily grind of wallowing in self inflicted misery, so when life happens to us, we can suffer that problem genuinely and grow from it.

I found that gratitude was something I was missing throughout much of my life. A sense of entitlement lead me to believe that if I didn't have what I wanted, then I was being wronged. The truth is, I don't deserve anything. Just being alive is a gift. I will hold onto this realization because God gave it to me. Now I dedicate that which was given to me back to Him.

Its so refreshing to hear someone like yourself come to the exact same realizations that I have. Long fought realizations in my case. It took me years of questions and trial and error. Often going against the grain. Often being ridiculed or scorned for my approach. For a long time I've not been interested in Dogma or being politically correct or sugar coating things just to tell people what they want to hear. I'm a practical guy. I've had a strong BS meter from an early age. I have my Father to thank for this. But I took it to the next level. Life has pain. The pain of life is unavoidable. However suffering is a choice. When I feel forgotten and hopeless Lord let your water of life comfort me. Even though I fell on hard times these pass three years. I’m holding on and keeping faith even though it’s hard. Faith is our armor against the enemy. I keep faith even as I constantly struggle to provide for my children and I constantly struggle to buy groceries. My husband died years ago. At times I feel so alone especially as a single mom. Since suffering a heart attack two years ago and my on going battle with lupus I’m overwhelmed and discouraged. Both of my sons are autistic but because of you Lord they are thriving. I’m now homeschooling them so my hours to work are limited. I’m afraid Lord. Afraid of homelessness. Thankfully I have you Lord! I know you will continue to provide you have this far. I LOVE YOU HEAVENLY FATHER.

People's character develops when they are in the valley not when they are on the mountain top. We live in a sinful world because of the fall of man. Buddha didn't die on a cross for our sins. It's about this time you would have already clicked from reading the rest of what I have to say. Why? You have a very tenacious/aggressive personality. One that is set in your own ways and beliefs. It's great that you are taking an empathetic approach to mankind. Your prayers are misguided because your praying to the wrong God. I do like your content. Much of it has accuracy. I expect it to since you have a psychology degree. However, most psychologists never come to a faith in Christ because their overly logical side can't wrap their head around the ways of Jesus. Malice is common and the cause of much suffering. That said, the harder truth is that our response should be the same whether the source of suffering is our own sin or being "sinned against." Repent for the sin, including in in our response to abuse, whether pride, rage, or despair. That may be unwelcome advice for a victim to pray to let go of their anger, for example, but it's the path back to joy.

All suffering is perception. True suffering is experienced by the person who gets everything he always wanted but finds that he is still not happy.
All guilt is in our thoughts about the past, and all fear is in our thoughts about the future. There is no past or future. The past is gone. The future is not yet. All there is is our thoughts about the past and our thoughts about the future. Those thoughts are the veil that hides the present -- the only thing that is real. The only real reality.
Almost all thoughts about the past are about guilt. "I wish I had done that differently." Almost all thoughts about the future are about fear. "I need to think about what I'm going to do, so I don't screw up."
Letting all those thoughts go allows us to be pulled into the present moment. The only reality there is.
Letting go of thoughts about the past is letting go of all guilt. All of our guilt is in those thoughts.
Letting go of thoughts about the future is letting go of all fear. All of our fear is in those thoughts.
Having let go of guilt and fear, the only thing left is love. Love is all we experience in the present moment. Seeing the world through the eyes of love makes us experience everything as beautiful and everyone as wonderful. It is true perception. It is the end of suffering.

True libertarian values. I see the similarities to real Christian values there as well. Only the individual can basically save themselves. This needs to happen before they can fully contribute to their communities and greater society as a whole. Being more aware of one's self as an individual and not part of a collective brings great benefits... it's not being selfish. That's a different story and not a bad one either

Rev 21:3-4 and Matt 6:10 give us something to pray for that will alleviate mankind's suffering inside and out.

We can’t escape suffering. Period. We all have crosses to bear. The short, lighter cross piece is other people and environment. The long, heaviest piece is ourselves. CHRIST IS 👑

Suffering and pain are inevitable. Even Jesus, Himself the Truth, suffered by choosing to relate to those who couldn't understand Him. The greatest suffering we cannot imagine. To love the ones you die for and know their lack of understanding of Him and his purpose.
We too must suffer greatly in proportion to the love we choose to live toward others who will not understand our intentions.

People who lose their dear ones, know the true meaning of life, as they know the other side of life pretty well, they are very much sure about the present phase of their life, and know the value of life and people around, it's often the most difficult thing to accept. When people die and part away, life takes a sudden big turn, something we have never imagined and are least equipped to carry on this journey of life. Move on they say, for all they know.

Hi Dr. Taraban, I know you two likely have very conflicting views, but I think it would be very interesting to see you have a discussion with Dr. K (Healthygamergg). He is a psychiatrist who incorporates a lot of practices from Eastern religions (such as various meditations and such).
