How to Change Your Thinking and Your Life: The Four Great Efforts

  • If the Buddha were here today he would probably say, "If you want to change your life, then start by changing your thinking." In the Noble Eightfold Path, the Buddha taught that the way to happiness is to practice Right Effort, meaning that we should relinquish negative and harmful thoughts and instead cultivate positive and beneficial ones.
Peace and happiness can really be one thought away provided we know which thoughts we need to let go of and which ones we should cultivate and encourage. In this video, I explain the Four Great Efforts and give you practical tips on how to practice each one.

What is it that makes Mindah-Lee Kumar's videos so captivating? The answer is blindingly simple. She presents Buddhist concepts with no gloss, just straightforward talk and common sense and with the use of analogy that Lord Siddhartha was so fond of himself. What a great teacher she is.

I really want to thank you, especially today when my mind is at war with myself. 2015 hasn't been a good start for me. I've been having lots of negative thoughts , which has arisen due to anger and expectations. I've cried silently because I felt helpless and don't know what to do or how to react. The past few days have been really really difficult for me. It is an effort to smile. This is the second time I've watched this video and its uplifted my heavy heart and I feel so much betta. Thanks :)

Mindah-Lee...I work as a Chiropractor here in the US. One may not think so, but patients often turn to their chiros for psychological support. My wife and I have recently become interested in Buddhism as we realized we were already. So much of what I have learned from you are things we have often felt. We recently realized this is a philosophy that makes sense and could be helpful to many. I feel this is the greatest way to find peace and I will be sharing your videos with some patients who could benefit. Any thoughts on suggesting this way of thinking for those struggling, without seeming like I am pushing a religion? I do live in a dominantly Christian region and I do not wish to offend. Just curious on your thoughts and I may wish to pick your brain in the future. I will be reading some books on the subject, but please keep the videos coming.
    Best Regards...Chris

I the dance when two is born from one, When the body is dropped
And the breath no longer inhales.
There is a sense that I still exist, In completed silence, Perceiving space
No form, Identity or face, No emotion, no state
The dance of breath is felt, Eyes open
It seems I am back, Although this completed silence I had never left
Never meeting another to forget, miss or remember
I could not be alone as I had never been together

    Hi Mindah,
Thanks for the teaching and the effort on the video, it's very soothing watching your video.
I have questions which you may be able to help....
How to deal with difficult people in work, let's say there is one colleague that had been talking rudely to you and you would need to face him/her everyday due to work relation, how are we going to deal with them? I guess this might be quite a common problem bothering some people. On observation these type of colleague only rude to selective people, those who they dun like........if I would only deal with them once in a month I could have ignore them, but this is not so......thanks...

Hi Mindah-lee. In my recent journey, throw the wilderness of buddhism, i came across the text, about what buddha saw as the greatest things in life, and one of them being, disloyalty to parents, as the greatest crimes. Could you elaborate on that, because ive read that buddha left his fathers castle, despite his fathers strict orders not to. How should i understand this piece of wisdom, couse i can not on my own. Namaste

    • @NangongReng1973
      @NangongReng1973 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I guess what Buddha mean is we have to obey our parents if it is the right thing to do. For eg, we must be obedient even our parents scolded us for nothing. If our parents wanted us to steal,we should not because it was wrong. Our parents may be our siblings or friends in past lives, so relationship this live is transient , but we still have observe the right way of treating relationships. The Buddha is not disobeying his father . He is trying to seek salvation for mankind, so that all ppl, including his father, will benefit. This is just my opinion , as I am interested in Buddhism . You have to seek the advice from Buddhist monks or nuns as they are the reliable sources.

Behold and pay heed to the inerrant words of Supreme Buddha, King of Kings in the Lotus Sutra - Undisputed King of all Scriptures.
"If I (Buddha) were to lead and inspire even a single person
    Through the inferior vehicle (Hinayana),
    Having attained the highest path,
The universal Dharma of the Mahayana.
    This is simply not possible".
This means Hinayana simply CANNOT lead to enlightenment. Hinayana is destroying Buddhism and helping Christians take over South Korea. Hinayana must be erased. Mahayana is the ONLY WAY. Lotus Sutra is the ONLY way. All other ways such as Hinayana MUST BE DISCARDED now that the LORD has revealed the Lotus Sutra. Our Lord of Lords commands: COME ALL YE GODS AND HUMANS AND HEAR THE LAW OF THE LOTUS SUTRA PROCLAIMED WITH THE LION'S ROAR!!!

Thank you Mindah. The antidote to habitual anger and aversion is lovingkindness or metta meditation which then matures to compassion or karuna...I've seen some people skip the first step or confuse the two. Abandoning unwholesome (wrong) view, intention, speech, & action is right effort.
