I like how some versions have an extra bad ending if you defeat Jaffar, but time still runs out before you reach the princess. It adds an extra impact of being THAT close, but still failing to save her. Also interesting how some versions, instead of just showing an empty room and leaving it ambiguous what the princess's fate is, but others outright tell you if she gave into Jaffar and married him or was executed. The poor ZX Spectrum version however doesnt even give you that!
I find it weird you can still lose the game if time runs out after beating Jafar: you would think reaching and beating him would lift the time limit given he is no longer around to threaten the princess to execute her.
@@heroesoftomorrow3488 No, but seeing as he was trying to usurp the sultan's throne, and had many men to oppose you, he likely had a second in command to take over if something were to happen. You can't reach the princess in time, she still gets taken with or without Jaffar's word.
For its time, this was a Game Over screen that pulled no punches on showing the consequences of your failure, should you let the sands of time run out. Definitely one of the most unsettling Game Over screens in gaming history, right next to Majora's Mask and the original Donkey Kong Country trilogy.
The only consequence is that the protagonist fails to save his beloved. Who took her away and now it is only a matter of imagination to wonder if she lives as a captive of Jaffar.
I been wondering for the longest what the sega cd game over would be like considering it had cutscene. Guess it the same regardless. Thanks for showing the game overs, good video.
Lo que me sorprende bastante es el sin número de conversiones que tuvo este juego, este video podrá incluso servir a muchos a conocer sistemas nunca vistos XD.
Love the text from the NES version onwards. It's like "Damn, she died. Oh well, nevermind, I still have to fight Jaffar. There are a lot of fish in the sea, so I will find a new princess anytime soon"
I understand you perfectly. While making the PoP wins video, in some version I ran out of time on the last level several times, too many. That was exasperating, hahaha.
I was so relieved that SNES version didn't end game when the time is out. Make it more impactful in the end. It's probably redundant to include, but I wonder if there maybe a different reason for you to not include classic PoP from Forgotten Sands Wii?
@@retrosutra, I did not complete GameCube's version as it runs poorly on Dolphin emulator, but at least visually they looks the same. They both based on Mac port, so probably it's a direct port from SoT version. In Forgotten Sands Wii you need to find and drink green potion before to unlock the game.
@@retrosutra, one thing I forgot to mention. Various sources says Wii version include SNES version of PoP1. I have physical PAL version of the game and I can conform the game included is based on Mac version.
@@retrosutra, just checked GameCube version again. I noticed it gives level codes. So I struggled up to level 3 and tried to enter it's level code in Wii version. It works. Can't say for PS2 and XBox versions, but at least with GameCube version in mind it's safe to assume Wii version have exactly the same unlockable classic PoP. Only minor difference is control screen showing Wiimote instead GC controller. And I still don't know for sure if GameCube emulation is imperfect as classic PoP works very bad, while Wii version on actual Wii U seems to match Mac version perfectly. So I guess it is redundant to include Wii version in the future, but who know right? Maybe your next comparison for PoP1 will be "drinking every type of potions in all Prince of Persia versions" or "every method of defeating a guard in all Prince of Persia versions" where you can sneak in Wii version as well. Time will tell.
I owned prince of Persia on the SNES and the game over sign broke me as a kid. Hated it - especially the game over music. Just the best version of the original game to ever exist.
Macintosh (color) is probably the prettiest version of that time, only one that uses 256 colours. Its sad that VGA version doesnt. BBC fearlessly compets for the ugliest version (along with CGA).
Basically saying there still hope to save her despite time being up. It odd considering the snes retain the sadder ending in fact, you can still play actually make it’s more impactful when you see the protagonist standing there knowing he was too late
Notice how the Nes and Game Boy Game Over screen refer to Jafar as a "Tyrant", not a "Vizier" The implications here is that the Princess choose to marry Jafar and he became the new Sultan, but that one day the Prince would come back to free her and end his tyranny
Snes version not let us game over when the time runs out, the game instead let us continue to play till the last level and only find out princess's long gone then game over... idk what's the point of that, man that's cruel.

8 bit games did it well. Add the perfect music to it, and it's perfect.

Such an eerie, depressing tune; really fits the mood perfectly!

Your game is over, Prince
I'm guessing the time limit doesn't matter that much in the Prince of Persia Classic versions.
My Favorite Scene is the nes version because it doesn't have the room that like the other Versions
The one thing I love about this game is the artwork put into it
10:39 Wait what? The spectrum version shows you nothing when you run out of time!?
Yes :(
You don't know. You were probably killed. 😢

Hard to beat the simplicity of the Apple II version, the limited palette makes it that much more unsettling.
In Sega Genesis (Mega Drive) version bad ending, the Princess is forced to marry Jaffar if she wanna live.

Probably both Prince of Persia and Disney's Aladdin adopted the character Jaffar/Jafar from the 1940 movie "The Thief of Bagdad"
