I have been trying to learn light painting. I use a mirrorless camera. I know you use a phone. My question: despite the long exposure and the long light painting, why isn't the subject blown out? Is it because you are using a phone instead of a camera? Congratulations on your job.
There are a few setting on these cameras and even mirrorless cameras. It is called additive light. Meaning, the camera will measure the photo and what is exposed and only apply more light to the photo if it is there. This a difference between a long exposure where that is constanly exposing the light. I might go over this in another video. So olympus has a light painting mode that is additive where only the brighter parts of the image are processed and the lower parts of the image are kept the same. Hope this makes sense stay tuned for more explanation and examples. Thanks again.
I’m just working through your videos and finding them really inspiring. I’m just curious, you mention in another video the option of using an Olympus camera, but all of the videos I’ve watched so far you have used a phone. Do you actually prefer the process using the Slow Shutter app, or are you focussing on it to make the technique more accessible? I’m asking this because I have both options open to me.
Allan that is a good question. I for some reason just use the iPhone to show people and inspire people more. You know like hey this is not fancy equipment and you can do it to. So you are correct trying to be more accessible. I know the hard core guys like to use more expensive equipment to get a little better image quality but to me it is the feeling of the image and not the specs of the image.. Hope that makes sense. I might try to do a few videos of with the olympus gear or just regular cameras but of course some you cant watch the exposure so it is not as step by step for viewers. Also thanks for watching....

Yes the application is called slow shutter. You can also see my video on the basics of light painting and that shows some of the other items.
