If I were to show you some Chinese celebrities, you might not know their names or which countries they are from since they could be from Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan or China. Would I be presumptuous to say that I need to educate you? Using the word 'to educate others' is a sign of having inferiority complex, as Wode always used, "to educate the Chinese." On what aspect is he to educate the Chinese? First, his Mandarin has to be learnt from Chinese persons. Nationality has less and less to do with race, but in the old world races were defined by nationality. It's a slow process to change the way people think and it's kind of understandable that it's even slower in China where they are somewhat cut off from other countries. As an American I look more at how someone is dressed and of course when I speak to them. I guess growing up with all races you just don't think of it the same. I am African American living in America born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana. I am light skin with bushy, thick, kinky, wavy hair, I have no knowledge of any Caucasian people in my family. My Mother and Father are listed both as Negroes on my birth certificate. I asked a latino woman who I worked with who was almost the same color as me if I looked latino or spanish and she said no. You look African or Black. I just wanted to know how other races besides African viewed me because my own black people use to tell me I don't look black. They always asked me if I was mixed or Indian. All along, whites, latinos, Chinese etc., told me I look African or Black. We as African people need to know if you have color to your skin, we are all African PERIOD! AND WE NEED TO STOP CLAIMING OTHER RACES AND BE PROUD TO BE BLACK/AFRICAN! The ancestors of all black people came from Africa. Blacks should be proud of their ancestry and identity. Africa will be strong in the future if they unite as one. Even Many blacks look down on Africa.
(I encountered this problem often in Asia) Its obvious to say that black people are from Africa, but its impossible to say that Europeans or whites are from Africa. I think you're asking a tricky question. You should ask what nationality the people are for the pictures you're showing. Example, I am British citizen but not I'm not English by ethnicity. I am Pakistani by ethnicity. Just because my parents immigrated to England that doesn't change my ethnicity from Pakistani to English.

I don't think they understand the concept of national identification, racial background and ethnicity. But I also have to say WODE MAYA, your question were very plane, because unless you know the person you wouldn't know from were the individual is, they will therefore regard your race as a Identifiable tool. That is why they all though you were African and were right about it. Furthermore, most Chinese don't know about overseas stars. As a personal note, I think your question should have been; Do you think white Africans exist? or some thing in the line, then show them pictures as a prove. I think it would have been better if you told them more of "This black guy is British", "This black guy is Caribbean" etc. Since the point is not all blacks are from Africa, The best would be to include indigenous blacks in South Asia, Pacific Islands etc.

Nationality has less and less to do with race, but in the old world races were defined by nationality. It's a slow process to change the way people think and it's kind of understandable that it's even slower in China where they are somewhat cut off from other countries.

As an American I look more at how someone is dressed and of course when I speak to them. I guess growing up with all races you just don't think of it the same. I know when I lived in Vn people would always assume I was from the big three for whites over there. They would ask Australia ? England ? USA? I am African American living in America born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana. I am light skin with bushy, thick, kinky, wavy hair, I have no knowledge of any Caucasian people in my family. My Mother and Father are listed both as Negroes on my birth certificate. I asked a latino woman who I worked with who was almost the same color as me if I looked latino or spanish and she said no. You look African or Black. I just wanted to know how other races besides African viewed me because my own black people use to tell me I don't look black. They always asked me if I was mixed or Indian. All along, whites, latinos, Chinese etc., told me I look African or Black. We as African people need to know if you have color to your skin, we are all African PERIOD! AND WE NEED TO STOP CLAIMING OTHER RACES AND BE PROUD TO BE BLACK/AFRICAN! If you live in America and see Asian people, most people judged them from China because of their eyes even though they are Koreans or Japanese. i am a Filipino and people thought I'm Hisapanic or Mexican. Some Hispanic people get mad to me because I don't speak spanish.
Natives descend from East Asians; they crossed into the Americas on the bering strait land bridge. Many people mixed with native may have Asian characteristics. I've seen people I thought were Asian and turns out they're hispanic.

well I think if you show the same pictures in western people and if they don't know who are the people on the pictures, the answers will be almost the same. The short haired girl was a good example, she knew the people shown on pictures so she said he's American, south American for another one, but for the white woman she said she's from Europe because she didnt know her and like she said, most of White people came from Europe. For me only the two first people interviewed were really ignorants..the other ones tried to answer as much logical as possible..
People in US and UK had been shown photos of Chinese celebrities and 99% of them don't know Chinese celebrities. It is just the way it is as in most East Asian nations, they have a host of celebrities and who'd bother about Hollywood celebrities?

I think you're asking a tricky question. You should ask what nationality the people are for the pictures you're showing. Example, I am British citizen but not I'm not English by ethnicity. I am Pakistani by ethnicity. Just because my parents immigrated to England that doesn't change my ethnicity from Pakistani to English.

Further more, African is NOT a ethical identity, Italian are a ethical identity, Irish are a ethical identity, Arab & Persian are ethical identities, Han Chinese are a ethical identity because they are cultures were people have names, language & dress to go along with it, Africa is a Continent made of different ethic groups across 54 countries in Africa, that not only have ethic groups like the Berbers & Tuaregs, who are indigenous North African ethic groups and were originally Mediterranean and not black (look them up), but have black people in Africa who are genitally different and look different from each other (which these miseducated Chinese people don't understand).
