    As a dog trainer, people always ask what the best way to eliminate destructive or other unwanted behaviors. While most people realize that controlling our dog's environment is key, very few people realize that THIS ONE LITTLE THING is the best thing you can do to discourage your dog from being destructive and your dog will be happier too!
    What do pulling on a leash, jumping on people, barking for "no reason", and destroying property all have in common? The SAME solution!

    My oldest son is in his early 20's and he has type 1 diabetes. But thank God for this piece of article th-cam.com/users/postUgkxibD_L3sDyYENL5CwePCd9plRBqjzw2mw At first he thought he had the flu and was lying down on the bed for three days until his sister took him to the hospital. They took his blood and it was 600. What I do not understand is how he could have gotten it, since no one in the family has it. But he is winning the battle now. This is good stuff.

    Our young rescue coonhound mix was very gentle and timid that first week, but is now displaying a very strong and sassy personality! His bad habits are starting to show (he's finally settling in!). He's chewing piping on the armchair, shoes, my leather pencil case, and now he's getting a little mouthy with play.

    Releasing your dog's energy level from both the mental and physical points does help. I've worked with countless of dogs of the years and what works best is to make sure that your dog is secured in a room that cannot be a danger to himself. Giving him a toy to occupy him also works. Types of toys do play big parts. Making sure that your dog is properly drained of his energy is also important! This will give him the perfect time to refuel while you are away for the day!

      Oh yeah, those people who bring their dog home and say sit, paw, jump, etc. and are wondering why their dog is not responding because they have not taught them anything. SMH, some people are just lazy, dogs are smart, but won’t understand words without a meaning to them. Honestly, these dogs that have crazy high potential end up in shelters because of these arrogant owners.

      Hii, i need your help, my dog is a shelter terrier mix who's 1 year old, she has been abounded 2 times and stayed in the shelter for over 8 months, SHE DESTROYS EVERYTHING, and poops EVERYWHERE. Hi Zak,
    I have a 95lb 6.5 month old puppy. My otherwise sweet, well behaved and velcro puppy has been developing a growl and snarl in two circumstances. One, when I go to get him to put him in the large crate when i go to work and two, when going to reach for his leash to take him out of the back seat of the car. These are new behaviors and I want to make sure it is safe to be around him in all circumstances.

    We recently adopted a 5 year old Lab-Dane mix Duke, he was rescued by police recently and has a sad story. For 5 years the dog has been kept in a crate and starved. They do not believe he was ever really let out. Duke is a super loving and sweet dog and has been amazing with our kids and our other Lab Riley.
    Inside the house Duke is Obedient, calm and really makes and effort to please everyone. However the moment we walk out the door everything changes, in the back yard he spends all his time trying to escape no matter how much we try to engage him it's like he doesn't even registered that we are there. If we try to walk he spends the entire time on alert and no amount of redirecting or stimulation will break him from his focus. Even putting food in front of him fails to redirect his attention. Recently he has started freaking out when he gets near other dogs. It does not seem aggressive and more excitement but it annoys and scares others that do not know that the world is brand new to this 5 year old dog.
    Do you have ant advice to help this dog get use to living in a world with so much stimulation at his age?

    I like to watch a lot of the positive reinforcement videos on youtube. I enjoy your energy and approach to some behavioural issues, I think what you bring to the dog training world is pretty revolutionary and I love that you share with us. My biggest issue, both with my new puppy and my seasoned agility competitor is staying calm and quiet in the crate.

    New follower here. Our recent rescue (2 months) is a 1 year old aussie mix. He's recently started digging in just one area of our backyard playground that has a shredded rubber surface with a liner underneath. He only digs in this one specific area of the playground surface. Would love to curtail this behavior. He is walked for up to an hour in the morning, gets to the dog park in the afternoon or infrequently to doggie day care if needed, and gets another walk in the afternoon. In the meantime he gets playtime with us and has adjusted very well to crate training. Loves his crate and uses it as a resting place on his own during the day. We are also involved in a fundamentals group training class. Thank you for any advise you can give.

    Hey Zak. I have a female Dogue de Bordeaux/Pit Mix she's 16mths old and truly a wonderful and respectful member of the family. There are two things I haven't been able to train/help her with. The 1st being interactions between her and smaller dogs. She's been attacked (I know that sounds backwards) a handful of times by dogs much smaller than her. I've earned her trust and I'm always there to protect her and regain control so she will not react or "defend" herself. My concern is that I also have a smaller dog and they currently are so attached to one another however, I worry that should these negative encounters with the smaller dogs continue it will cause her to become reactive or aggressive to mine.
    The second issue we have is she is a bit timid. I've had her since she was 8 weeks old and she's never experienced anything that would have resulted in her being fearful. I only witness this "fear" when we happen to go out for a walk at night. If it's daylight she's confident- head up tail up.... total opposite when the sun goes down tail between her legs, constantly scanning, a bit jumpy and can't wait to be home. If there are any tips or advice you can share I would greatly appreciate it.
    TIA
    Amelia

    I don't have a question I just wanted to thank you for your hard work. Your videos are awesome. I have a Border Collie and Kelpie mix. Talk about energy to burn. I am 65 and my pup Chicky is almost 5 months.
    I was tearing my hair out I tried treats she ate them and ignored me. I tried a tug o war she jumped all over me. One day I tried a soft sqeeky orange ball that bounces.
    Wowzer on one day she was doing everything I asked. She is a sweetheart of a dog she loves everyone except she's teriffied of cars going by
    She will get in if it's not turned on. And rides ok no crying. So we still have lots to do. I wish I could help support you but, at the moment I'm living in a diy house and am needing to insulate and get plumbing in. Love yas keep up the good work. You have saved my relationship with my pup. I fell in love with her as she has the best of both breeds looks more Kelpie. With intelligent eyes a sassy spirit full of love.
    People are right these dogs learn fast too fast lol.

      What I would do is tell him to sit
      then give him a treat, and then to lay down = treat
      and keep on doing that . And if he does not stop the say no , if he has a kennel then tell him the kennel.
      And if you dont have a kennel get a kennel and kennel train him.
      Hope that was helpful.

    I hired a local dog trainer to teach myself and my pups. Adopting adult dogs was so different than getting them at birth! This trainer used the rewsrd technique but also used the spray and harsh leash correction methods with attendant harsh collar. That didnt last long with me. They did not do well at all. Found Zak's videoes and what a difference! More pain and fear (or any) does not make a good and happy dog. My babies are so much happier and better after a couple of months! Thank you Zak! Wish I would have looked and found your videos before I hired someone who wasn't right for training.

Arthur is a high energy dog, but he is also anxious with strangers, mostly men, and his excitement levels go through the roof. Whether it's play, exercise, meeting new people, he can't control his excitement and although he is doing better than he was at first, we are still working on this...I would love some tips on how to teach a dog self control. He is like a wild animal when he gets excited.

      FBE.... dogs are not 'cousins' to wolves. They are 2 different species, just like an Australian Dingo is a separate species from the dogs we know (Canis Familiaris). Dogs were developed over tens of thousands of years ago from wolves. That was back before people used fire... see ? Dogs are no more wolf than they are fox.

    • @fallen4life080
      @fallen4life080 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Actually in regards to species YES, they are cousins, or even more correct they are akin to siblings. Wolves are a sister taxa to Canis familiaris,

    • @fallen4life080
      @fallen4life080 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Dogs DO have a lot of similarities to wolves. Remember dogs were bred from a particular variation of wolf temperament and we humans accentuated those specific traits. Not to mention genetically a lot of those traits we selected for a genetically linked on the chromosome to OTHER traits they posessed therefore dogs share a lot of overlap with their wolf sister taxa.

    How would you train a dog that is afraid of EVERYTHING to not be afraid? If I leave something out of place he stops dead in his tracks and then runs and hides under my bed. If there is a noise when I'm letting him out he runs back and hides under the bed.If someone comes over he hides under the bed. I don't know why he is so afraid. He is a Rottweiler Basset hound mix. Zak, I just want to thank you. As a Veterinary Behaviorist new first time dog owners need to here the info about why and how dogs learn best more than once. You are saving me the time it would take to make my own video. So many folks want you to be briefer in your explanations. I want you to keep explaining for beginners. Maybe as time goes on & requests for the same problems come in you could make videos with of good technique but with more repetitions of the training sessions, beginning, middle and end. I find that the mistakes the dog and trainers make during training session are as helpful to clients and the perfect "transformed dog at the end of training. When I make a physical mistake during a training session and point it out, the clients laugh and take a big sigh of relief. I add "No-one is perfect at dog training, but that's OK. The dog will learn anyway if you can get it 80% of the time. Ignore the mistakes that you and the dog make, reward the desired behavior and the dog will love you for it.
    Can you make a video of dog's you see that have been trained with E-collars, prongs etc, where the inhibition of the bad behavior has quit working.
    I live in an area of USA where dominance and pain are still popular methods. I like to have a variety of education materials to put out there on Force-Free training to counter the volume of the later.
    Best regards and Happpy Holidays to you and your crew.
    Dr Cynthia

      i know im late, and i ain’t no dog expert at all, but what makes most sense to me is to expose your dog more to what makes them excited more often, so they think of it as a regular thing. dogs don’t understand the world, they only have the world they’re exposed to which is their owners most likely. their owners are what they think about constantly, unlike us humans who have things to look forward to and other things to think about. therefore, your dog probably gets excited because it’s not exposed to whatever they get excited about. my dog used to have the same problem towards people, bc she never was exposed to much other than me, the owner. but after she got her vaccinations, i let her around more people and dogs, and the peeing completely stopped, and hasn’t peed bc of excitement in months ( shes 10 months )

    • @uluwehi54
      @uluwehi54 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      so, if your dog pees out of excitement towards people, expose her to people more regularly, like family, friends or dog parks. if it’s toys, make sure your dog has lots of toys to play with all the time wherever they are.

    My brother's friend helped us train our dog some as a puppy (she's a trainer) and she said you shouldn't ever say "leave it" with something you're going to give them and that it's important if it's something dangerous. Do you find that to be true? Should I try "wait"? He already knows it. He does the same exact thing as Beux though with the trying to pick up before you and trying to jump and take it out of your hands. We don't necessarily want him to have perfect fetching as his breed is kind of lazy (Great Pyrenees, Lab mix) so he only fetches like 3 times before getting bored and is just not really his thing (tug more is, used to be keep-away), but I at least want him to know manners. It was reinforced before though by my brothers so he thinks it's okay (then gets yelled at just the next moment). But he also seems to lose interest when he has to listen to you?

    • @r.b.4611

      The main thing in the suggestion is that you separate the commands so that the dog doesn't think it's in a game when you tell it to not bite the electrical wire.
      It won't be important what the commands are as long as you use them correctly and the dog understands both.
      I don't know if that is necessary though.

    My Siberian Husky gets overly excited when meeting new people and dogs. When new people visit the house, she jumps, dances around, and really gets in the face of the person. There isn't an aggressive bone in her body but she can be a bit overwhelming, especially to younger kids or people who aren't really "dog people." In in the same respect, when she sees another dog, she goes insane. She jumps, pulls on her leash, and even cries and whines. She is a very friendly dog but I can see another animal taking her excitement wrongly and things getting bad if it happened to the wrong one and she happened to get loose from me or the other from wherever they are.
    These are both things that I would really like to fix with her.

    I would change nothing about my lurcher but my American bulldog mix poops in the house when we shut him in a room, if we leave all the doors open he can hold it all night but as soon as we shut the lounge door he poops, so I know he can hold it. he does pull on leash if i let him but I'm enjoying the challenge of teaching him not to so i wouldn't change that. thanks for the free videos!!!

    Recently adopted an 8month old German Shepherd Labrador cross who was separated from her mother/litter too early (Approx 4 weeks).
    She's hyper nervous and vigilient around everything, barks at anything that moves and won't socialise with any other dog in the area, but when I take her to a friends who has an adult Lab, she's almost perfectly behaved and relaxed.
    I take her to the park as often as I can, sometimes 2/3 times daily, toilet walks every hour or so and the moment she sees you leaving or putting on a hat or grabbing her lead she retreats to the furthest point from the door, if one of my daughters is in the room, she'll hop up on them and I'll practically have to carry her out of our apartment. Same thing for leaving the immediate area also has her locking down and I'll have to either coax her (with a laser pointer - which she's addicted to and will follow the 'pen' even during daylight) or lightly drag her with her front paws just off the ground in her harness or carry if on the collar across the road. Anything to help her gain some confidence or overcome her socialising problems would be an immense help.
    Thanks in advance.

    Should the person actually own a dog? Don't have time? Same with my neighbors who just put a Great Pyrenees out to bark for the neighborhood. Most humans should not own a dog. Forgotten a week after they bring them home. Hello. A dog is a huge commitment. Get a goldfish.

      One of the best comments on dog videos out of millions. You sir are correct, most people shouldn't own dogs - people think it is a right to own one like a car. If you don't have time to exercise your dog, you shouldn't have one - as simple as that!

    My dog is trained like crazy, obeys 100 % of the time, and is super smart and loyal.
    People are amazed all the time of how well he listens and the things he can do.
    What they don't understand is the very very very large amount of time, consistentancy, attention and love I had to poor into my dog to receive this behavior.
    It's a trading game.
    The better you are to your dog, the more you shape his behaviors, the better off you will be.
    And it's not a one time investment.
    This will continue till the day he dies.
    But it's the most rewarding journey and I wouldn't have it any other way.

    We just rescued an 8 month old lab mix puppy from a farm, tied up that has had no training and is trying to dominate our very sweet passive 3 year old Australian shepard mix. Mainly trying to bully between us and snapping at our other dog around dog toys and bones. We are keeping her active, crated last night well, redirecting her away quickly and saying no. Then reassuring our older dog. She went to the vet for shots this morning. She is in heat, has worms and has been with us less than 24 hours so I know things will improve but I would love some ideas to help her. My husbands working with them a lot, petting them side by side while they each have a bone, walking them together, etc.

    • @stormytrails
      @stormytrails 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes!! People need to know that there is not a chance in HELL to get a perfect dog much less a puppy. We set then up for failure even though we have such big brains!! And off they go to a shelter because 'they are a bad dog' when really the people are very bad dog owners and should never have another dog. Period. We need EDUCATION before we get a puppy or rescue a deserving dog. Breeds...fooey on that...ALL PUPPIES learn via their mouths. It is temporary and if one knows the bare bare basics it IS NOT A PROBLEM. Like give them a substitute toy to chew and my favorite is to massage their tongue, gums, teeth, upper pallet, lips...they seem to cool the biting. It isn't biting it is discovering, as important to them as eyesight is to us. People actually believe they might get the PERFECT dog. All trained, totally sensitive to their human's needs...what a load of crap. Poor dogs get taken to the shelter where they are put down. Make no mistake, that poor confused dog/puppy has no idea why it is in jail on death row. We all know it is because of laziness and non commitment of the human with oh so big a brain and such a tiny teeny heart. It breaks my heart. Humans need to be put in kennels...for being so ignorant, on purpose ignorant, for using sweet innocent animals to use for their own anger problems, for not RESEARCHING how to care, train, feed and house a domestic animal dog or cat. So scary to learn how few humans are actually educated enough to be good 'parents'.

    • @stormytrails
      @stormytrails 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lianakayarr...this is a rite of passage for you the human. Puppy biting is just NO BIG DEAL. Drawing a little blood out of you is normal and not on purpose!! This is part of their very normal, very important way to learn about this world about you. It is NO BIG DEAL. I am worried that if you think THIS is big deal what you will think of other actions they will have that will be far worse if you aren't fully committed to your puppy. Commitment means time, money and you learning a whole new world. Or you will be dragging your dog to the closest shelter saying 'it just isn't working out'....a death sentence. I take my puppies and when they get going I use the time to massage their teeth, gums tongue so I'll be able to easily brush their teeth later (don't get me started on dental costs for dogs). Your puppy needs YOU to get educated about them and how to train and how to communicate. Otherwise, if you fail, your puppy will probably get killed. It is so truly worth the effort. Anything that requires us to work, learn and care enough to step outside our once oh so comfy world IS WORTH EVERY SECOND. It is up to YOU to learn to communicate. There are no perfect puppies. All puppies teeth/mouth. All puppies need to be shown how to let us know when they need to go potty, all puppies need to learn how to operate on a leash, all puppies need to learn how to listen to their owner and that only happens if they trust you. No yelling, cussing, no hitting, no jerking, no isolation no pain...otherwise, you are failing and you will probably give up sooner than later which is a death sentence for your dog. Hang in there, get lessons, Zak's stuff is great!! He makes sense. You HAVE to spend time with your puppy. I am unbelieving anyone could work and keep their puppy inside, in a crate or in a room and expect them NOT to poop and pee and shred anything and everything they are able. Puppy daycare at the very least...

    • @TaysTings
      @TaysTings 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My sheltie did the same thing, especially when he was a puppy. Dog parks helped him, he would herd other dogs and they never minded, he also herds children when they come over. For the most part, he can't help it, but we discouraged it when we thought he was doing it for attention. I found that spending extra alone time with my dog helped the most. Like running, or rubbing his tummy, or playing with his favorite toy. idk if that helps.

    • @PeeblesPack
      @PeeblesPack 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      since border collies are so smart give him a job, it doesn't have to be herding but if you live near a rural area definitely ask if he can practice herding. Also try agility you don't even have to compete but give him something new. Border Collies and Belgian Malinois need mental stimulation so learning new tricks and task around the house like turning off lights or opening the fridge and grabbing a drink could be helpful

      Frisbee! I have a Border Collie, super active, this year I've started a new scheduled with him. I take him for a 30-45 Min walk as soon as I get up, also some mental training along the way and then a quick trip to town, when we get home he is asleep for half the day. Then later in the day we go to the dog park for 45 Mins-1 Hour, For social training, if the park is empty we play frisbee. Once again, when we get home he is gone. Asleep within mins. No more running around like a hyper child.

She wants him to play wrestle all the time and he's not up to it. I'm seeing from your videos that we have to be willing to exercise her enough. We've been saying "No" too much, as well. Jeeze, I've been blessed! My Loki was an unexpected gift! The more I watch these videos, the more I realize how AMAZING my baby boy is! He had MANY issues at first as he was abandoned (at the very least). But, he's become an angel for me. He was destructive at first (now I understand why) and SO FEARFUL! In fact, I thought he was just... a "lost cause". Now, he's still easily nervous, but knows I have his back. I try to "push" him a little, but also with recognizing if he's not comfortable or scared, etc. Despite everyone else telling me to stop "babying" him, I give him an out quickly. He can always try again if he wants to! He pushes himself more, and he's MUCH calmer, and I no longer question if he's "ok". He tells me that he is! Thanks for your vids and information! I can't imagine how many pup lives these things might save when actually put into practice.

    My rescue dogs have lived together for 3 years without any problems but have recently started fighting. One attacks the other one seemingly out of the blue and it’s very explosive. We live in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, so trainers and behaviourists are limited. It’s so confusing to me cause they’re ok together most of the time and great together on walks and outside the house, but sometimes these fights happen so now I don’t trust the one who starts the fights and I’m always on edge. I’d really appreciate your advice. Thanks so much.

    Great advice! Starting the day with a few minutes of exercise always gives great results in high energy dogs. If you see the dog starting to get naughty during the day, it is almost always out of boredom. It is no different than when a bored child starts getting into mischief. If you notice a pattern during the day of times when your dog is getting bored and starting to get naughty, try to avoid that behavior by having a few minutes of play at intervals throughout your day if possible. If you are going to be away from home, such as going to work, then give them a good play before you leave and another when you get home. It will solve a lot of issues.
