In case someone didn’t get it, in the Bolero by Ravel, the snare drum is playing the same pattern but is doing the crescendo through out the whole piece. That’s why they show the “5min later”. It is actually really hard to control the dynamic.

Plastic tie wrap is good for your triangle. Now practise hitting it in different parts of the triangle slowly, to really hear the difference between hitting it on the side and then hitting it inside the bottom, as well as right at the top, near the tie wrap. All of these sounds are different. Try it too at different dynamics PP, P , mf , f and ff (literally banging the hell out of it) in different parts of the triangle. Another hint for really accurate fast triangle playing - abandon the "proper" beater and find a fine screwdriver that has a good weight and feeling on the wrist and use that instead.Who knew there was so much to triangle playing? Yep. While I find that individual percussion auditions/exams can be easier in general, since we don’t have to worry about things like squeaking, we still have MULTIPLE. There’ll be at LEAST two, for a keyboard and snare, but it’s probably gonna be more.

Thanks. And yeah, we have to, this isn't even all the insturments we play. But these are some of the most prominent ones in orchestral percussion, and marimba is one of our most common solo instruments. But there's also vibraphone, castanets, temple blocks, tuned chinese gongs, gran cassa, bongos, congas, chimes, and more (also you should play drum kit, even as a classical player as it is often needed). We're also required to be decent on piano, because piano is sometimes included in the percussion parts. Often we'll have to learn to play new things or percussion instruments for a specific piece as you'll mostly only be taught how to play the instruments shown in the video + vibraphone and drum kit.

If you need silence, dampening them all is a must to have the conductor not murder you. Only tearing a timpani head mid-concert, thus screwing ALL of your tuning annotations AND stickings is considered a worse way to die, but at least there's some gallows humor to be found between the time the head breaks, and the conductor finds out. -- Timpanist for 20+y, massacred only 1 head (Theme from the Lost World - J. the entire orchestra/band relies on you for keeping time
if you're in marching band or indoor percussion cymbals are so hard to hold, they're heavy and there's many tricks with them.

Everyone assumes percussionists are hacks or not real musicians until they realize... they have to play like 40 different instruments at a legit pro level. Each with its own technique, nuance, artistry, and challenges. Cool bro you can double on flute and piccolo, or trumpet and flugelhorn, or alto and bari sax... percussionists do whatever the equivalent of doubling but for a few dozen. Whatever the word for that is.

@Hoaxcrit if could use an analogy to explain it, it would be like, I could pick up a flute and blow into it. That wouldn't make me a floutist, because I would need to have good intonation, Dynamics and everything else. With timpanis, there are certain stick techniques that bring out the best tone, along with certain places on the head that bring out the best sound. You are right, it doesn't take a genius to play timpanis, but you can tell when there isn't a good timpanist. That is basically all percussion instruments, it's all about finding the right place to hit and stick control, yes even the triangle has a certain technique.
