I still have my PC copy from when I was a kid, and certainly picked up Saturn and Gems version years later. Comparing it to the 2:00 Tony Hawk runs is very applicable, as this game is more than just racing. It's a great blast to hop back into for an hour every year or so, especially as a Sonic fan from those simpler times. Got to admit though, I don't think anyone would get through this game if not for the amazing soundtrack.

    • @Lethargy514
      @Lethargy514 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@Ezra Nobleheart It's not as simple as that. Challenge has to be rewarding in order to be worthwhile. People don't like challenge just because it's a bitch. They like it because the journey and the result of conquering that challenge is rewarding. Justifying a poorly executed game with "It's not broken you just have to learn how to play it" is stupid because I can theoretically say that about any game that IS broken.
Example? Sonic Boom Rise of Lyric isn't broken, you just have to learn how to play it. Like by executing those Knuckles pause skips so you don't have to go through buggy ass sections.

Honestly this was a really special little video. I too didn't really understand the idea of a _bad game_ when I was a small child, and I played Sonic R on PC all the time. Nowadays, I can definitely see how flawed and poorly put together it is, but part of me also understands the exact kind of fondness you describe here. It's good to see more people sharing their experiences of this kind with the Sonic franchise, instead of taking the easy clickbait approach of yet another "Sonic was great in the 90's but then 3D happened" review. Good stuff.

The games controls aren’t that bad when you stop thinking of this game as a 3D platformer and strictly as a driving game. Still weirdly slippery but I don’t think it’s bad.
Just recently got my self the old PC version to mod to work on my PC and I had a alright time.
My biggest problem with this game is that you can 100% before this video ends. Time attack and other modes kinda make up for the lack of content.
Also, Liam, if you want to race someone that knows how to play this game, maybe there’s a way to have netplay on this thing. I’d be up for it!

You probably can't get netplay on the PC version, but with Dolphin and the Gamecube release of Sonic Gems Collection, it's indeed possible to play with someone else thanks to Dolphin's netplay feature. Both players must have the same ISO, and I'm not completely sure but I think memory cards need to be disabled (this is fixed in more recent releases, I believe).
The requirements do increase, but I got a really bad computer (Pentium DC 3GHz, 2GB RAM, integrated Intel GPU, so yes really bad not just bad in today's terms) and the game runs at a stable 30fps, so I imagine most other people should be able to run it very well and even at HD resolutions.

I agree with most of your comments but.... Have you seen any other Saturn games? Travellers Tales performed a miracle by even getting this to run - the programming is beyond state of the art for the time! Sega's designs (though great) were just unrealistic for what the console (that Sega provided) could realistically manage.

I just watched the video and for the most part agree with every part of your assessment. My history with Sonic R goes back to 1998 when Best Buy was clearing out Saturn games and I picked this up for 9.99 brand new. Took it home and through sheer force of will as a teenager learned to like the game. The cheesey soundtrack, to the "I can't believe it's Saturn" graphics, to the wonderful level design grew on me over time despite the admittedly terrible controls and I unlocked everything in the game and had a lot of fun with it. Fast forward to 20 years later and I tried replaying it with friends and admittedly sat back and wondered how and why I liked this game so much in my youth. Your video sums it up very nicely, great job and you have a new subscriber!

This was such an excellent video. You really captured why I kept coming back to Sonic R as a kid. Your discussion of how the game gets rewarding as you learn the level design's intricacies and adapt to the weird controls reminded me of ExoParadigmGamer's idea of the SEGA Learning Curve, how some games feel janky and frustrating when you first pick them up but reveal a lot of replay value as you adapt to their quirks. Great stuff.

That section around 22.15 really encapsulates how I feel about the game, and why I keep coming back to it. I've had a lot of crazy things happen to me in the last 7 years. Some good. Some not so good, and your explanation really hits the nail on the head. It really takes me back to a much more carefree time.

Although you've made an amazing video in general, I'm so saddened to hear that in the year 2020 people still think it's okay to bash programmers (or any game staff for that matter) shipping a working videogame.
As you said yourself this was made in a time where people were just figuring out, how to deal with the 3rd dimension in games and that was especially made worse by the Saturn being notoriously hard to program for. Only 6 programmers worked on the game and the main programming for the Terrian System was done by a single person, which makes this on the contrary quite impressive, I think.
In addition to that I'm pretty sure that crunch was a thing, even back then and especially with the _Sega_ from back then, who cared more about quantity than quality. And it'd be a double-edged sword to criticize crunch in the modern day but bashing people who suffered from it in yesteryear.
Lastly I want to point out that Jon Burton, founder and Lead Programmer of Traveler's Tales back then, found its source code and released a "DX Patch" for Sonic 3D Blast which you may want to check out, improving on controls and many other things *_and_* revealed some of the beta music Jun Senoue composed for the game (which appeared in later games as remixes):
    th-cam.com/video/TO-N2WHbnqU/w-d-xo.html
The TL;DR is: When criticizing a game or any other piece of art, be fair to the people who did it and ask yourself whether you'd be able to do it (better) yourself.
I'm still stoked for your future videos! Have a nice day! =)

You don't need to be master chef to judge if food tastes bad or not. Games will be judged on it's merits alone and no amount a apologist rhetoric will change that. We are considerate to people who had a bad past and may act a certain way but they don't avoid jail time or judgement as much as we judge a game on its merits we are understanding to their situation but it doesn't change anything if it's a shit game. Of course, I never played it to the extent that you have done but you've certainly given me a new appreciation for the game as a whole since I haven't played it in years since I don't have my Gems Collection disc anymore. Also, I'm glad to see you give History and Manual the love that I gushed over in the comments of the Understanding Sonic Music video. I'll stand to always enjoy Sonic R's soundtrack more than the game itself in the long haul since the emotions of those songs really hit me hard, but I really grew to extremely loving Diamond in the Sky after hearing a beautiful cover that is unfortunately unlisted, but not gone from TH-cam. This game's music as a whole is phenomenal in terms of its vibes, but Livin in the City is probably my favorite of the whole OST but the whole soundtrack is so damn good even choosing a favorite is insanely difficult. So congrats Liam you're 2 for 2 on overloading me with Sonic nostalgia from my silly childhood.

Its amazing to me that pretty much everything you mentioned in this video echoes my own thoughts on the game as well. The music especially always makes me just feel so good and it's probably in my top 5 favorite sonic OST's despite how little music is here and it makes me forget sometimes that so many people hate the soundtrack which still surprises me to this day.
Also, if you have an original xbox i'd highly recommend a game called mad dash racing, it's essentially what I think sonic r would've been had it been given the proper care that it deserved featuring some genuinely well designed tracks to run through as well as character abilities that play way more into the levels than this game did and on top of all that it is just a whole lot of fun to play, has a pretty cool single player and a good deal of unlockable content that's pretty satisfying to go through.
Also also (i'm sorry this is the last one) give this game called Metropolis Street Racer's soundtrack a listen, I swear to you it will not disappoint ;)

Thank you for this video and... you're now my favourite content creator officialy. 🏅I watched a lot of your videos before and really enjoyed them. Now I found this one and... yeah this is my kind of content. Keep it up man! Great work!

This video popped in my feed.
It's great to see another fan enjoy Sonic R.
My first experience was on my cousin's Saturn. We would sometimes break the rules of Sonic R to play tag or hide and seek.

Dude YES Sonic R was fantastic, thank you! I grew up with the Saturn when everyone else had the PS1, and this was one of my favorites. The OST and controls become addicting, and the multiplayer was a blast! I remember playing on New Years Eve with family and friends decades back. Awesome channel!

Dude I’ve never resonated with a video so much. If I was making this same video I’d parrot everything you said but add much more, like the fact they finally made a sonic racing game where, I dunno, they use their FEET? Not only that but it’s one of if not the only sonic game that has footstep sounds and those just make any game feel nice

  • @midorifox
    @midorifox 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

The OST is amazing, and I truly wish they'd give another go at the spin offs, with better controls (even SA2 controls were better) and a good multiplayer. And maybe with also some of more obscure characters (like Bark the polar bear)

The graphics and level designs in conjunction with the weather and music made it so beautiful to look at. I had/have the PC version and still remember the joy of being immersed in the levels. There are still plenty of days where experiencing something such as a sun shower in the city brings me back to Sonic R. I don't know how to put into words how well they captured tranquility and joy, but Sonic R to me was more of a piece of art than a game, and it just happens to be experienced through a game.

Great video man, you know it took me years to figure out that you could hold down a button to accelerate instead of holding forward. Controls still suck but I find that a lot of people don't realise you can do that and I think it makes it a little more playable.

Glad to see some love given to both R and Gems Collection as a whole, since it’s a fond childhood memory for me as well. The composers and designers really didn’t have to go as hard as they did on the menus, but man it’s great that they did.

If you like Richard Jacques' and TJ Davis' OST in Sonic , I definitely you recommend listening to Metropolis Street Racer on the Dreamcast. It has brand new songs by TJ Davis, Richard Jacques, and other artists that play up the cheese factor to 100, but I honestly love listening to it every once in a while.

This is a great video and I'm glad to see some positivity toward this game for once. As others have said though, there were a lot of logistics and circumstantial issues that are likely what caused the game's issues, rather than programming. In fact, Traveler's Tales are known for employing some of the most talented Western programmers in gaming, which is clear considering they managed to pull something like this off so quickly on Saturn (possibly the hardest console to ever develop for). Sometimes limitations just cause a game to not quite work out as well as everyone working on it had hoped.

Just want to say, along with your video and some of the other warm comments, that completing Sonic R in about a half hour was my gaming ritual as a kid. Why? Because I had fun. I played the PC port quite a bit, and rekindled my love with the Gems collection. A few years ago I picked up a Japanese Saturn just to mainly play the Saturn version of Sonic R (and also Jam collection), and I recommend it as you can get both for about the same price as a US copy of the game. Not being able to set the weather to snow was kind of refreshing!

I am so happy I am not the only one who enjoys sonic R too. I was introduced to it, through the TH-camr ClementJ64, I thought it still looks great (this is when I was 14-16, I can't remember). I got Sonic Gems Collection for the Gamecube and started playing it on my wii, along with Sonic CD, I enjoyed it and never knew why, I want to go back onto Sonic Gems collection and play it again, I miss everything about it now because you talked about it.
I will also say it's a shame my Sonic Gems Collection crashes when I do the bad ending of sonic CD, I'd never see the end cutscene. But now I got Sonic CD for the MegaCD I bought 3 years ago, so now I can get that Sonic CD experience of the bad ending

You spoke to my heart about this game. Particularly the part about making you brother play it because no one else wants to. I know my cousin was my victim. I really appreciate the branching paths of this game particularly using rings to open shortcuts or not shortcuts. It is a mechanic that I really love and haven't seen used in any racer since. I have long given up playing the game with friends or other people. But seeing this video makes me feel better knowing that I'm not the only one who enjoys this "terrible game".

It is so good to hear someone else enjoyed Sonic R as much as I did. Man, that Sonic Gems collection wasn't as packed as Mega Collection, but I'de argue it had so much charm that it's important to own simply as it's own cheesy, delightful, amazing visit on how to do presentation right when it comes to a classic collection. I owned this thing on Gamecube, and I will never, ever regret having bought it.

I had the Xplosiv PC collection of sonic 3D blast, sonic R and Sega rally, sonic R became my favourite game in that collection, it's fun to do the first races, but then it becomes better as you begin to explore the levels and unlocking everything by further sharping your skills and it's just something gratifying about seeing that true end splash screen when finishing the game. However after doing it all it's not much to come back to, it's more fun to begin a new save rather than keep playing on an completed save.

I've been telling everyone about this game and how much I love it for over 20 years straight. People always say I'm insane, I definitely am, but it always does my heart good to see someone else that see's the magic in this game. Sonic R is more than just my favorite *Sonic* game, but one of my favorite games of ALL TIME. I try to run it at least once a week. It's just oozing personality and love, and the controls feel like butter once you get the hang of bumping off the right objects and drifting the right way. I know I'm just a nobody with no videos on my channel and no subscribers, so all my ideas all fall on deaf ears; so seeing a *real* youtuber talk positively about something this special to me is really something great. I rarely ever comment on videos, but thank you.

Because of how fun Sonic R is it has made my all time favorites list along with hi quality titles like Mirrors Edge,Fable 1 & 2, Fallout 3, ACWW, Sega Rally and.... Aliens Colonial Marines, seriously I love that game, gameplay is fun, graphics are atmospheric and the PvP was awesome. customizable weapons was a nice touch too.

I haven't played Sonic R in probably 20 years, but I relate to what you said about it taking you back to a simpler time. I had it on PC when I was like 6-7, and used to play it all the time. Back then I always just called it "sonic racing", and I have clear memories of playing some Sonic R in the computer room, then going back in my room and watching Toonami on Cartoon Network. It was only in the past few years I actually learned that it's something of a meme.
