The biggest cardinal sin... Spawn without his cape, looking like a dork running about. Like, I get it, you probably couldn't see him because of how massive it is... But that is the least of their problems lol
I worked with the Lead Programmer. He seemed a bit sleepy and woefully unaware of how horrid the game was. I told him (while we were working on the killed SG1 game in 97), "we will NOT be like that craptastic Spawn game." I haven't talked to him in 20 years, though.
The Spawn franchise is hilariously one of extremes; at its peak quality, you have a sometimes poignant, well-written story of a man whose own flaws consistently drag him back into Hell's arms in spite of all his good intentions; at its nadir, you have the farting clown movie with CGI muppets, this game, and issue summaries that go "In this issue, Spawn broods on a throne of garbage, like he did in the last three. Next issue: AL SIMMONS FIGHTS A CYBORG GORILLA."
I think the movie honestly had plenty of poignancy in regards to Al's characterization. In some ways, it was actually ahead of its time and thoughtful in ways the comics and TV series weren't. Al being super protective and paternal to children out of his own regrets and guilt at never being a father, letting Wanda go for her own happiness instead of just brooding and feeling sorry for himself. Even the relationship he has with Cogliostro seemed a lot warmer than in the comics or animated series.
"You have claimed your own soul to me. You have to lead my army of hell. Oppose me or face eternal damnation!" ... that's what I think Malebolgia is saying.

the best part of this game is that the case had a shiny insert cover that looked cool. also does Fantastic 4 for ps1 count? it had neat stuff for a 4 player beatemup like a large boss you could only hit by golf swinging rocks into the background, and at the end of every level the person who did the best (i think) fought a mini-boss... for some reason. also racetrack loading screen.
I got this game for five bucks at a convention once. The manual is easily the best part. Later levels have platforming (jump with the triangle button... with tank controls) and key hunting, and I gave up around the bottomless pit floating platforms, I think in the caveman level? On the plus side, there's a move where, if you're very very close to a dude, you can rip his arm off and watch him bleed to death while he keeps trying to fight in-engine. Thought this was impressive, if impractical. The combo inputs are kind of like Masters of Teras Kasi, but less fun and don't look as good.
