    I started tomato seeds about 15 years ago. They grew so leggy and fell over and died before I could plant them. Three years ago I tried starting seeds. That too failed, SO, I am taking what I've learned from personal experience and watching you and make a go of it this year. I am hoping that i have saved enough pots and trays from over the years of having to buy starts that I can start everything I want to.😅

      If your tomato plants get leggy, you can re bury them, and they will grow roots along the stem! As long as they don't dry out, you can get a second chance!

      A stick and some cord will do wonders for your tomatoes. The tomatoes I started last yea (I live in Australia) are potted and have grow cages around them I periodically reweave the tomatoes into as the get longer.

      @richelleg225 I was so worried at the time that it wasn't past the frost date to think that I could replant them. But thank you for that piece of advice 💚

    Great job! Super informative and Yay, for Kansas 6B! I haven't seen many like you gardening in my zone, so keep up the great work. I started w/ cardboard yogurt boxes from Aldi to transport seedlings and red solo cups, so there's lots of ways to start on the "cheap". Thanks again for just the right amount of detail and info.

    I enjoyed your video. I have been starting seeds by the sunny living room window for decades. Last year I finally invested in my first two grow lights. I was blown away by the difference they made to my seedlings. So this year, I bought two more. I too prefer the square nursery pots opposed to the round ones. I live in Ontario, Canada. In early Spring I put my seedlings in two cold frames to give them more natural light. The first couple of weeks, while the nights are still too cold, I lift the trays out of the cold frame and bring them inside just for the night. The 2" deep trays work much better for the "back and forth" than the shallow cookie sheets, which I use only for the bigger, heavier pots.

      Would it not be easier on you to cover the cold frames with blankets at night so you don’t have to do all that work? (I’m a lazy gardener)

    • @JS-jl1yj
      @JS-jl1yj 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have tried covering the cold frames with a sheet of industrial clear plastic, but some nights that's not enough.@@Bandaid17

    I always learn something new from your videos. I didn’t realize the heat mats were not necessary with certain seeds or that they were not required once germination happened. Ordering from Bootstrap using your link.

    Lol… I have been using the cookie sheets in the past yrs. and they are heavy to carry so I’m switching to the plastic trays. Thank you for showing how sturdy the bootstrap trays are produced.

      Good to know I'm not the only one that's used cookie sheets! They get the job done but seedling trays are so much nicer!! Im sure you would love the difference!

    Such an informative video, thanks Bree! I invested in the 1020 trays last year, looking at the mesh and domes now. How do we prevent mold forming on tops of starts?

    • @itsbreellis

      Once seeds germinate take off the domes. Also have good airflow in the seed area!

    Have you ever heard of Cowpots ? They're made out of cow manure and you bury the pot with the plant . They completely break down and feed the plant.

    greetings fellow kansan - manhattan here, just south of tuttle creek a bit - by rocky ford. you need to get some worms. i harvest over 100# of castings a year in a 5 gallon bucket tower - in my bedroom closet. i've had them for a little over 3 years and they've reproduced to the point i need to start a second tower. easy peasy. no odor. no pests. believe me, they would be somewhere else if i had to deal with any of that. also, grow lights are incredibly easy. and incredibly inexpensive if you know what you're looking for. you want at least 5000K - kelvin - the intensity of the light and about 6500L - lumens - brightness. i have a great lighting setup in my laundry/seed starting room and i did it for less than $25. check out shop or garage led lights. going with grow lights is paying for marketing. they draw almost no power so they are safe for a power strip. getting ready to start seedlings next week. would have started this week but with the weather . . .

  • @pconan1
    @pconan1 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Bre, do you crop rotate? I watched you garden last summer but don’t recall hearing if you move your tomato plants around to different beds from year to year. If you do, how many years do you recommend before you are back to the original bed?

  • @waynespringer501
    @waynespringer501 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    You do save money, however it's not as drastic as a packet of seeds for $3 vs a single start for $3. That pack of seeds is $3, each seed pot 15 cents, good quality seed starting soil another 15 cents per plant , electricity increase for at least 2 months 15 cents per plant, and that's after you've already purchased the grow racks and grow lights.

    Great video thanks for the info, how do you deal with fungus gnats, or do you know run into that issue?

    • @itsbreellis
      @itsbreellis  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I do every so often. Typically setting sticky traps out when you first see them will do the trick! If you have a bigger problem you can use neem oil and water mixed together as a spray. Theres also some organic house plant sprays that will kill them as well. Ive used one from dr earth that worked really well and didnt smell as bad like neem. Heres a link to it - drearth.com/product/final-stop-house-plant-insect-killer/
