    I thought the most compost/soil I ever had delivered was 6-7 cubic yards. It was 12! I was way off!

    I’ve been watching your videos for awhile now and I’ve finally worked up enough nerve to start a garden this year! I used to loveeee makeup growing up and throughout high school .. stopped doing it because I really lost my self confidence after graduating, tried so many different hobbies.. I feel like I really lost myself for a few years after graduating.. everyone I went to school with knew exactly what they wanted to do and either went to college or immediately started their career.. I worked at the Sedgwick county Jail as a deputy at 19 because I thought I wanted to eventually be a police officer and after a year during Covid I felt it just wasn’t for me.. quit that and only made enough money to pay my car payment and burnt through my entire savings. After allll of that I felt depleted and convinced I was going to be a literal nobody. I’m 23 now and I FINALLY feel like I’m slowly getting mentally stable. I was at Walmart one day during spring time last year and stumbled across a window bird feeder.. I’ve always loved listening to the birds in the early morning. Love sitting outside with the dogs just listening to nature.. after getting that bird feeder I was like what if I started growing flowers.. so I was YouTubing helpful videos and came across your page and your entire story.. and not to mention you’re in Kansas ! I’m in Kansas too!! Anywho long-story short you have inspired me. I hope you continue to make videos because I truly enjoy your videos and advice and just your entire outlook on life.. I hope the 2024 season brings you nothing but joy and peace. Thank you for being YOU and making these amazing videos. Even if it’s just playing in the soil I love it!

      You have plenty of time to figure it all out!! When I was 23 I became extremely allergic to hair color and I was a hairdresser. I had to leave that career. I did a few other things and covid came around and I was laid off from the career I stubbed into after that. Thats when I started to really dive into gardening. The more im outside the better Ive always felt when It comes to uncertain times! Thanks for sharing your story, and congrats on starting your first garden this year!!! So exciting!!!

    We have a backyard compost bin where we just dump kitchen scraps (no cooked leftovers/meat of course), layering with brown or green doesn't matter, I throw in dried leaves, soil from my pots that I felt unusable for planting & garden trimmings. I just left it unbothered the entire fall and winter, they will somehow dry up. Come spring, I shovel from the bottom and mulch it using the mulching function of our blower then mix those in store bought compost. It acts as compost extender packed with lots of organic matter.

    I got 4 cu yards of soil last year for my raised beds, this year I went a little easier for my grow bags and only got 2 cu yards 😂. It's great exercise, and I noticed the leftover soil was perfect for worms to move in and give me free worm fertilizer!
    Also for my compost bins I use untreated pallet structures with removable wood slats for the front-it works really well.

    Hey Bre! Why don't you turn that back space into both your compost area and chicken coop, chickens will even break it down faster, plus their poop in the compost is amazing. How quickly does the bags dry out? Have you also considered letting out our chickens in the winter into your garden bed space to find those grubs? Sine there is not that much planted, it should be good? Also, do you use that wood in your house for the fireplace? Absolutely love your vids.

    I planned out my garden about 2 weeks ago and since we have had some nice 70 degree weather this week I took that time to get the garden prepped and the beds made for the first time. Last year and the year before I just shoved stuff in the ground. This was my first time doing an in ground garden the last 2 years and this year my first really planned and laid out space. My garden is about 60 by 10 with a 10 foot greenhouse I placed at the end of it. So I have 50 feet of in ground planting space. I laid out 20 beds in that space. I have 6 8x2 beds along the fence that my neighbors share and then 12 6x2 beds and 2 4x4 corn beds. This nice week of weather I laid out and tilled every single bed over 2 days and I was incredibly sore too. It makes me so happy to have a "true" garden. I am putting in tposts at the end of some of the rows for climbing veggies, I have a few more to still put in before I get twine wrapped. I'm taking that slow since I won't have plants in the ground or reaching those trellis' for a few months still. My mom scored on a pallet and a half of border bricks last year for I think about $40 total so we made 4 beds around my property and still have a ton of bricks left for us to use in her space and mine. It's made my property look so much better to have focused areas to put potted flowers in. We are hoping to move next year so I'm not putting all the flowers in the ground here.

    Looking forward to this video. I haven’t watched all of your videos, so I’m wondering if you have broken down how you compost? I’d like to start, but it kind of seems a little daunting.

    • @itsbreellis
      @itsbreellis  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      When I get a new system going ill defiantly do a video breaking down what I do. Honestly dont over think it, its pretty easy compared to what some people say. Do a even mixture of "browns" - anything dead and greens - anything alive/food scraps and make sure it stays moist and you mix it. You will be just fine!

  • @StillOnTrack
    @StillOnTrack 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Oh my god... I actualy love your compost setup! I've been stressing over affording wood and tools to build a wooden one in my yard, but you just put up some T-Posts and hog fencing. Simple and BRILLIANT! That probably breathes a lot better than wood as well, aerating the pile and speeding up the process. Only thing I might do different is put a panel on the front too to contain it from all four sides.

    • @itsbreellis
      @itsbreellis  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yup, that was the main reason we did it! Only complaint was not having something to be able to close the system off in the front. Otherwise it got the job done!

  • @StillOnTrack
    @StillOnTrack 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Thank you SO MUCH for this video, Bre. I found it anything but boring. I actually found it VERY inspirational.
    This is my 4th comment on this one video because several elements of this one video have really clicked with me.
    Most notably the reason for this comment is that your mention and demonstration of using beneficial nematodes may just be a possible solution to the ant infestation in my raised bed. I hear they don't necessarily kill them, but they can make them move without disturbing the soil, and that's great! Plus it'll be a general benefit for soil grubs and other stuff anyway so hell yeah! I'll be doing more research. Cheers! :)
