This little gadget is FANTASTIC at really dampening down the noise of the violin whether its due to feeling self-conscious of playing with other house mates, or the bloke next door etc! Whatever the reason, this will do the job...!! enjoy!
The piece im playing is called Meadow Ayre and was composed by myself. There is no sheet music - sorry.

My neighbors love to hear me practice so much, they threw a brick through my window so they could hear better.
THIS IS SO UNDERRATED!! 😂😂😂
LOL!!!
LOL😁
Such an original comment :/
Xaxaxxaxax xD
I was going to buy a house in the countryside;but I think the mute will be a much cheaper option! Thanks! ;-)
😂😂😂😂
😅🤣😂
😂👍
😂😂😂😂...classic!
🤣🤣🤣
I love how you showed what people will hear when you played with and without mute.
Really helps. Since many of beginner tends to feel embarrassed because of the out of tune or scratching noise.
If I was your neighbour I'd be happy to listen to your playing
Same
Alexis Santa Ana yes!
Sweet people
Hahahahaha,,, I’m not that good,,, but my neighbors request her favourite song if she hear me practicing....
me too in fact id join in n improvise.
You underestimate how thin my walls in my apartment actually are.
Same haha I can often make out what my neighbours are saying when they’re speaking at a normal volume in their apartment hahaha. They would definitely notice
Very helpful for me a 73year old beginner. Thank you.
I’ve been playing the violin since the 3rd grade (nearly 15 years) and I’ve never heard of a “practice” mute. I feel like my potential was stifled through highschool because I only wanted to practice when I was home alone which was a rare occasion. I never expressed that it was a problem for me. I want to get back into playing the violin but I’m in college with roommates, thanks for making this video!
so, to put it short, the difference is like singing with your mouth open vs singing with your mouth shut: same volume, but more compression, so the waves can't reach the same distance with the same amplitude. great vid, thank you :)
you sound smart in this comment lol
@judôê Flutā I like how you replied to a 2 year comment lol.

@@lilyanne2676 Hi 🤣
I just started, in being one of those "am I too old to learn violin?" I couldn't afford lessons when I was younger, and I wasn't exactly in a cultural hub of opportunity. Now at 54, a newly opened Music School(Lakehouse Music Academy) in Asbury Park, NJ., just hired a violin instructor. I didn't hesitate, if anything, I'd pay for 4 lessons, as you can pay month to month. I wanted to learn. I didn't want to rent a violin, knowing I was going to stick with this till I could at least play something well, I bought a violin. Finding first advertised on amazon, then went directly to store website of Kennedy Violins and bought a G2 Bussell Picard violin. I like the darker grain tone and paid an additional small amount for an upgraded bow.
I know it will be awhile before playing in front of anyone, but I like it. Thank-you for reading.
never to late
+P Coleman I'm in South Jersey, I'm curious about this music academy. I just picked up violin last January. I'm out of my 'dying cat' phase, but I know I always have more to learn. I have a student level Carol Robelli now, but I have my eye on a Pfretszchner 100 for my upgrade. Played one down in Cherry Hill and fell in love with it.
Phi Colem lol ms and hs and free lessons
I think your camera is automatically adjusting the sound level, so it's hard to tell how loud it really is, unfortunately.
TooSlowTube She said the sound was getting compressed.
Interesting
I love how I never need to ask any questions after your tutorials/reviews/demos... You literally cover EVERYTHING! Thank you for being so informative and knowing exactly what people want to know! 💜🎻
...600 videos and 6 years later, I would hope so lol :)
WOWWW. When I put the mute on, it feels like there is no difference when I'm playing but this really reassures me that when I play at night, no one can actually hear me. Thank you so much!
Mute test : 6:25
Amaury アモリ not all heros wear capes
True hero
Thx
You can hear clearly that the sound is more concentrated in one place with the mute and without the mute it's more spread out so thinking logically it's louder without the mute, meaning it works. Everyone saying they can't hear the difference, listen again.
Got mine in the mail yesterday, tested it out this morning for a good half hour. I asked my roommates, approximately
You’re my go-to for anything violin related! Watching your videos is VERY helpful! Thank you!
its my own composition from my new violin book 'The Great Violin Book 1'
The download link and details are all under the video. The song is call Meadow Ayre.
So i ordered a violin and i find your videos so helpfull. I get bored easily when people are explaining things but you aint boring at all! Thank you so much for your videos🧚🏼♀️!
Thank you so much Alison for your thorough review in real life scenarios. This is exactly what I need. The embarrassment of everyone being able to hear my mistakes or distracting my daughter as she practices her piano and my husband his guitar has stopped me from practicing many many times. I didn't even know that this little contraption existed until I watched your video. I will now be able to practice with more confidence.
I found this video very helpful! I've been playing violin for almost 5 years now. Even when I started, I was always a really shy player (and I'm not kidding when I say really shy). For a year now, I've been trying to find ways to make my violin quieter or how to DIY soundproof my room or something of the sort because the fact other people in my home could have even the slightest chance of hearing me practice is unsettling to me lol. I literally heard about these mutes yesterday and they might be just the thing I need, so thanks!
Oh my gosh this lady is so helpful. Thank you!
I followed your review and decided to order one for myself, I confess it works even better than I expected. Thanks for the suggestion, it helps me practice for longer before my ears get tired.
***** welcome
When Alison is in the room doing the first demonstration, it's difficult to tell the difference immediately. You can definitely tell the difference outside in the hall and even moreso in the other room. I feel completely confident with what it'll do now, enough to decide to buy it. Thanks very much! :)
Brilliant and helpful demonstration! You're really talented and thoughtful. Thank you for this priceless stuff!
Yeah!!! Thank you going the distance and trying out the mute!! ❤️😃👏🎻😘your one in a million n you play beautifully!! Thank you. My son is disabled and I don’t want to disturb him when he’s sleeping!! Your the best!!! ❤️👏
I ordered one of those same mutes to go along with my violin, thank you for demonstrating how to apply the mute and proper use. Now I'll know exactly how to use it when I receive it in the mail. Thanks again for the proper demonstration. :-) I have a small practice space, and this mute will be invaluable to me.
Thank you so much for doing this detailed video! I was really concerned about what my neighbors were hearing. This has put my mind at ease. 😊
Thank you for this video. You play very well and it's good to hear you. I needed a mute, they did not get a good model in my town in Canada, so I ordered one on Internet, from the USA. I chose that one, the ultra practice mute, and I am very very very satisfied.
In my case, Without the mute, that is definitely not what the neighbors hear. It is more like a dying rabbit at this point but it will improve! At least the mute sounds a bit more like a dying rabbit under a cloth but one cannot be picky when learning such a wonderful instrument :-)
Having grown up on a farm that sound would make me hungry.
every day youre so nice . i love your videos .thanks
Thank you for taking the time to make these videos, they're a huge help! I've played guitar for a while and always wanted to learn violin, so all the advive and opinions are appreciated as I'm going to purchase my first violin soon! Too bad you're in the UK, you seem like you'd be a wonderful teacher!
i own one of these and I NEVER practice at home without it! I love love love it!
Thanks for showing these videos I been watching some of them and it really help me know a lot thanks
That piece is awesome. Really.
It's brilliant!! i so need one of these asap as a new player :)
Thanks for showing us the difference Allison.
Thinking about the ultra, but have been using a rolled-up dollar bill mute (when in doubt, throw money at it - literally). I have been playing/practicing (fiddle) with the local mountain dulcimer jam group, and they were all asking if I'd bought a new bow or something; When I told them I was using a mute, they cheered (lol). Sort of a wakeup call, I guess.
You are a great teacher thank you 😊
Very nice video. I must say that it fits exactly on the bridge of a Yamaha 5 4/4 student violin. Thank you. ☺
Your videos are so helpful!
I think your videos are really great, just awesome! As an eager young beginner, I am anxious for any advice I can get. I really appreciate your sharing your knowledge and experience in the way that you do. I realized that if I were sitting in a real lesson with a teacher such as yourself, I would be hanging onto every word, in order to learn and grow. Great job, and thank you so much for your efforts and your time in making so many wonderful and instructional videos for us to learn from.
9 years have gone by. Are you still playing?
I can play this violin in the quite dead of night for only my ears and my dog to appreciate.
+Robert Anderson come on be honest! The dog is probably just being polite! :D
+joelchummel , he does have good manners.
Super helpful video, thank you !
Wow awesome !! 👍👍
you're a life saver. Thank you
I don’t think you were trying to be funny or if I’m just really tired, but I laughed a lot watching this video. You’re too adorable!!
Your very through.. I'm enjoying your videos very much. Thank you '
Thanks for your reply, maybe it tested my hearing some. thanks again for being in my world
Beautiful piece!
I bought mine in Canada at one of the larger Music Store chains-I use it ALL the time! I practice so much more now. My neighbour hasnt pounded on the wall yet since so Im happy! (so is he!)
i have a mute on my recently purchased violin ,but watching your video it certainly does make a noticeable difference, it does its job for sure.:) glad I bought this at the same time as my house walls are quite thin, plus the dogs don't get so freaked out..lol
Thanks for this kind of video... it really is a big help...
Very good video. Was interested in getting one of these and I definitely will do now. Well filmed, edited and of course you are very easy to look at lol.
I watched this..and watched it again to see the difference..mine is ultra USA mute..it does take a lot of the sound down and it gives it a sense of um..choking?
I noticed that it helped to
1.reduce the sound
2. Not play too close to the bridge
And noticed that the more you push it down the lesser the sound.
Thank you again 🌟
Your video is so helpful, thank you.
That's kinda funny because I actually like to practice alone when no one can hear but I'm pretty sure my neighbors can in fact hear me..😂 But they don't see me so it's fine 😅
That's what put the dampeners on for my violin lessons in school :/ It was a long time ago and we had cat gut strings - eek! I'm in the process of looking for my first violin since I handed my school loaned one in 30 odd years ago. You have been (and will be) a great inspiration, I've been wanting to learn properly since I left school. Thank you for these wonderful videos :)
I definetly heard a difference when the microphone and camera were outside! Thankyou for all the advice :)
Awesome!
When my violin does come in I will most definitely be using this to do some late night practicing.
Thank you so much for this video! I'm going to give the Ultra Practice Mute a try - another mute I got wasn't so effective.
yes. It was professionally recorded in a professional studio and mixed by a sound tech. All properly done. It cant be bought separately as it accompanies my book called The Great Violin Book 1.
There is a link to my book under almost every single video including this one as i just checked.
there is a bit of something to lose: $9 to $15. :) but i might try it.
I have to say this is probably the most fun video of your's I've seen...not only have I been humming your Meadow Ayre all day (and I found myself trying it out on the guitar last night), but that happy little interstitial moving-the-camera theme as well. :-) As for the mute, I'm definitely going to try to get my hands on one when/if I get around to picking up a violin of my own, I'm really curious to hear the volume and tone difference in person. Thanks for demonstrating!
I like that!
Beautiful is the Player.
Very cool! I had no idea there was such a thing until a few days ago lol
I definitely need this....
I fricken love this lady so informational thanks learning alot from u n zlatas channel
I think it was a very good video, I could clearly hear the difference in the other room, but not so much in the same room! Good test thank you, all I need now is one made of lead or maybe concrete!!!
I think I'm gonna have to buy one of those
Thanks for the video! I learned how to play the violin, at least the basics, in Japan where I had a pretty solitary music room to practice in. Coming back to the states, I ended up having to go two months without practicing due to not having my own violin just yet. I'm now embarrassingly rusty and was having a hard time practicing with how loud the violin can be. I didn't really want to terrorize everyone in the area just to practice. I feel much better about using a mute now (was also worried about my bridge).
Dear Alicin! Dont be afraid to completly press down the mute on the bridge so it can muffle the volume of your instrument. Be gentle but firm and take your time use your index finger and gently rock it or almost massage it over the bridge. If your bridge isnt thin enough at the top your mute may get stuck! Dont get in a hurry with it and it shouldnt cause any damage. I HAVE THE EXACT MODEL ULTRA AND I LOVE IT. THANKS VERY MUCH. IT CANT DO ITS JOB UNLESS FULLY CAPPED OVER THE BRIDGE. THEN IT WILL SOFTEN AND GIVE NICE HARMONIOUS BUZZ. ENJOY THE PEACE OF MIND.❤
Hi, it's very nice to e-meet you. I've spent the whole evening enjoying your videos. You are incredibly talented. I am a student violinist, 40 years ago I studied in school. I'm now relearning to play. I just wanted to take a moment to e-meet you. Thank you for your help and your wisdom. Rich
Thank you beautiful Mama..
I actually have a mute, and I did notice how much the sound did mute but it still sounded very loud to me and I was being so silly that I stopped practicing all together :( this video has filled me with new life :D and I will now stop worrying so darn much. thank you
After finally getting a professional violin I decided to get one and the difference is amazing no more complaining brothers yay!!
That's a hell of a difference!
At around 6:00 you mention the mute covering vision towards the violin. I'm a new student and I bought a wooden mute. I think people refer to this issue regarding to seeing the strings next to the bridge. When we are new to violin classes, learning to slide the bow over the strings and worrying not to touch the wrong one, the mute can really obstruct the view. Using the wooden mute, I practiced the open G and D strings, but I'm having a hard time trying to isolate the A and E strings. Please note that I'm at the very beginning of my lessons. I'm sure it will become easy to do in a near future and my concern will be towards the "arm" of the violin, but by now, when I need to focus on the strings here to set the right bow inclination, mutes really do represent a bit of a nuisance - albeit a necessary one :) Thanks for all the great videos, by the way! You are awesome! :D A big hug from a 37-year-old brazilian fan ;)
Thanks Allison, once again you videos have been very informative. I have a Stentor Harlequin at the moment but I have been told that it sounds awful (maybe its just my playing ;p) and so I have stopped. I will be buying a Stentor II as you have so many recommended to people. Will be buying one of those Ultra Practice devices with it definitely. :)
Funny video indeed so wonderful. I must say this mute is as essential especially for beginners as the chin and shoulder rest. I hope i get this here. I tried to make my own mute by wrapping some wire etc on top of the bridge and even tried to close the F notch with a hanky but nothing works really, that was all on my custom made new bridge. I suggest u should use the small mute anyway in all videos coz it hurts ear if u suddenly play open string and vol is up on earphones.
Wow cool thanks for the review. I have been hesitant to buy a violin, even though I've always been intrigued by it, since I live in an apartment. I just purchased my first violin yesterday (Mendini MV300) since I saw this review of the mute I think it will be possible for me to learn this instrument and not disturb my neighbors as long as I stick to reasonable practice hours. Thank you so much for your reviews!
I have the same practice mute, and it works very well. You'll definitely hear more dramatic difference when you try this on your own. It was about $4.
you are so good
Blue-tac works just as well. You can stick some weight in it(coins etc.) if you really want to quieten it down. You can also put a very small blob just to cut the high frequencies( the E string side of bridge) which cheap beginner violins suffer from. Especially useful for younger players who can hear high frequencies better than us oldies. I use this wheeze a lot with my pupils. If they pull a face when on the E string bring out the blue-tac, try it, it works.
Hi Alison, great video! I wouldn't have purchased the ULTRA practice mute if not for your superb video demonstration. I immediately noticed a significant difference in sound with the mute when placed on my violin. I didn't notice a major change in sound on your video, that is with the exception when you played your violin next door with the door closed. On my violin, I got used to the muted sound immediately; and it sounds really nice. The mute gives my violin a nice soft, mellow tone. In fact, the strings don't even sound like steel strings with the mute in place. The strings actually sound rubbery when played -- to add to the new rubber smell of the mute. I'm sure that new rubber smell will eventually wear off in time. BTW, for me the mute fits and plays the same regardless of its high or low placement on the bridge; and it fits all the way down onto the bridge. In closing, I am practicing more since I purchased the mute -- and loving it! : )
Thank you!!!
i was playing a Meadow Ayre which was composed by me and is from my violin book I have recently written. You can buy it using the link under the video in the description box.
I have no idea im afraid! I have never heard of this before. Are you sure you are not playing closed to the bridge than before? Is it on correctly?
Other than that Im not sure I can help without seeing a video perhaps?
The biggest noticeable difference was when you played in the other room with the door closed. Thank you so much!
It's quite fantastic! Today I got my Concert Violin and I can't wait to play without being worried to annoy my family 😓 Many thanks madam
With the mute off, the sound is compressed, so with the mute on i can hear the violin louder. But, it is a good video, you explain things very well. Thakns.
+MrThanovitch When the camera is outside the room, i can here the difference.
I'm going to be as polite as humaly possible. You are a 10!
I love that mute
I have been using one for sometime.I was pushing it all the way down. The bridge is now distorted. Someone told me yesterday that you do not push it all the way down as it can also affect the tuning.
Besides anyone complaining about the sound, I use the mute to protect my hearing
I also have musician’s earplugs.I do not enjoy the music as much with mute and ear plugs.
Can tell the difference more with the door closed bit, which is actually better in my opinion cause it really ends up not making a difference to you and then a lot of difference to the people you're trying to mute it for. Thanks for the vid!
lol. I have and i did!! Its from my violin book currently on sale and its called Meadow Ayre.
Another additional thing you can do to mute it a bit it to put masking tape (better yet, Gaffing tape...leaves no residue) over the f-holes. Used to do this with my upright bass to reduce pickup feedback
I've played guitar for years but never a violin. I was thinking about getting one to mess on but was worried about the extra noise, especially with me being a learner. This makes me think it can be done though without torturing the neighbours. Although an acoustic guitar can be pretty loud too when hammering away at it sometimes. Not had any complaints about that so far, but a violin can be more piercing.
Thanks so much for this! :)
I love how helpful your tutorials are
I have this mute and it does the trick beautifully. You've got to make sure, however, that the rubber "arms" of the mute touch the strings when it rests on the bridge. Otherwise it's just a rubber thing sitting on your bridge. With the arms touching the strings, it mutes the volume quite a lot and you can practice at 4am without waking the neighbors.
Yep. I tought of that.
I've been playing violin for 5 years and recently found out what a mute was. Everybody else seemed to have it but I never knew about it
