The Stormlight Archive | 5 Theories For Book 5

  • Now that book four of the Stormlight Archive, Rhythm of War, has been out for a couple of months, I’ve been increasingly interested in making a few theory videos on my predictions for book five of Brandon Sanderson’s epic fantasy series. Well today is the day we discuss a few of those theories and try to make educated guesses at what’s going to happen next in this Cosmere novel.
    Now as we know, book five is the last of this arc of the Stormlight Archive. Book six will be the first of the second arc that takes place at least ten years after the events of book five. So while I feel it’s too early for prediction videos on the end of the series, I think a prediction video on the end of the first arc is perfectly doable...

    My theory: Lopen is actually Adonalsium
    Ok, haha. Now my actual prediction: I think that the 5th book will end on a bitter sweet note and that the whole second ark will be way darker and in book 10 we will actually get some kind of a happy ending.

    I don't think Kaladin's arc is heading towards death.
    I think ever since the Honor Chasm, he's been trying to convince himself that he can live, that he won't be overwhelmed by all the bad things that happen to him.
    I think it makes more sense if he dies of old age, like Syl's last Radiant.
    To die young for your oaths is one thing, but to uphold them all the days of your long life, that's a different kind of inspiring.

    I think Brandon said (somewhere, don't remember exactly when but I have the impression he said himself). That the main characters we are used to, will still be main characters to the end, and he won't end their story abruptly. I think he explained that when talking about how the "1 character focus per book dynamic" works.

    My theory is that Taravangodium convinces Dalinar to willingly join him and fight alongside him in the wider Cosmere war, possibly making some concessions related to Roshar that Odium doesn't like but Taravangian the man does.
    Taravangian the man always believes he is doing right at any cost. He's ruthless but not cruel. He's not a bad choice of person to lead a war against an external threat that could enslave or destroy all of Roshar, and while Dalinar would rather lead himself, he'd be willing to negotiate here.
    I would not be shocked to see the duel cancelled by mutual agreement, basically by Dalinar conceding in exchange for firm unbreakable promises related to Roshar.

    • @RavensRants
      @RavensRants  3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Kaladin will die but be invested, between Hoid taking a big interest in him, the story of Fleet and Zahels talk about investment the clues are there. I also think his storyline merges with Rysn to protect the Dawnshard through a relationship with Rysn or Cord. Who better to protect the Dawnshard then a loyal hero who is the epitome of Honor. He has already stepped back from the leadership role he is prime for the bodyguard protecting the love of his life and the Dawnshard role. I think the flute plays a big part in the investment.

    I'm not sure about Kaladin dying. It is the most popular prediction; however, his journey seems to be moving away from fighting. Sacrificing himself to save others would have my guess before ROW, but it contradicts his 4th oath. I want Snaderson to address long term mental recovery for him. Kaladin's death would break that thread. (unless Lirin became the first therapist which would be a good way to handle them both). ROW was about him choosing to live and realize he can't protect everyone. It just seems off to remove that growth by a martyr death. My personal guess is that Kaladin take Jerzin's place in the oathpact. We have him going to Shinovar to help Ishar - seems to be a connection there.
    Agree about Shallan and Testament.
    Dalinar will lose. I see Dalinar as the big death next book or becoming a mind-controlled Fused. Taravangium is a huge threat and him losing now would be cheap. (Unless Cultivation destroys Odium instead to become the villian. I would love to see Cultivation go evil some point in the back 5)
    I would love to see Moash redemption, but I'm not sure Sanderson will do that.
    Shallan saves Ba-Ado-Mishram. Then becomes a world-hopper at some point.

      Thank you! I see a lot of talk about Kaladin dying but I feel like it would hurt his development. Personally I feel like right now dying wouldn’t be a big choice for him, especially if he did it to save someone. Idk I just think it doesn’t make much sense as an end to his arc, but that’s just my personal opinion

  • @ianonrust5766

    I think Gavilar is exactly as dead as Kelsier is. I think we might see Gavilar as Odium’s champion. Second theory is basically baseless but I feel the first is very likely considering the way he spoke before his death. I also am kind of hoping for a mistborn-esque ending where someone becomes both Odium and Honor in order to have perfect balance in the shards that govern Roshar. Dalinar is the obvious choice, considering his early life was spent controlled by Odium, before being helped by Cultivation and living with honor later in his life. He understands both Honor and Odium.

    • @morridin7766
      @morridin7766 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I might be wrong but from what I understand the only reason Preservation and Ruin could be merged is because they were exact opposites. I believe that the only other shards that could possibly be merged are Dominion and Devotion. I believe Brandon Sanderson said this but I might be completely wrong.

    • @GarthShoemaker
      @GarthShoemaker 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Love the Galivar idea. Or, can Odium bring back Dalinar's first wife to be his champion? Dalinar is all "oh the guilt!" and Navani is all "girlfriend please".

    • @joshuafischer684
      @joshuafischer684 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Bringing Gavilar back would be an immense letdown. Also, where would Gavilar have gotten enough Investiture to become a Cognitive Shadow? He dies after failing repeatedly to bond the Stormfather, and I don't think Odium would have foreseen any future use for him to keep him around. Remember that Odium bet it all on Dalinar becoming his champion and lost.

  • @chrisblackburn6567
    @chrisblackburn6567 3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    Something that I have been thinking about, which mostly came from Odium's line about the "War for the Cosmere", is whether Brandon is trying to build up an Avengers style crossover that pits Knights Radiant against Mistborn and so on. I'm not sure if its necessarily what I want for all of his series but I could see it as something that he might do, even though he has a tendency to be more subtle with his Cosmere connection, Rhythm of War was much more blatant so it's possible.

    • @RavensRants

      I'm just as curious to see where this whole Cosmere war goes

  • @UncensoredScion
    @UncensoredScion 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    You've already been told what's going to happen to Kaladin, it's the title he (and only he) has been given along with the explanation of what the Fifth Ideal is for each Knight Radiant along with what Syl has said she believes him to be. (and no, it's not stormblessed, though that will play a part in it)
    You bring up the point I've noted since Oathbringer and how Aodlin thinks himself worthless because he's "surrounded by gods and heralds", whereas he's the only one who actively has treated others as being better than himself. He will heal Maya by saying the first and second ideals of the Edgedancers (and really, it'd fit his personality if you look at how he acts) but no, Shallan will become a worldhopper and start to affect things in the wider Cosmere akin to Hoid - likely becoming his apprentice.
    Everyone is going for the "he loses" argument, eh I dunno, unless we learn Hoid's letters are set after the current era of Stormlight then I'm not convinced, if we are told that, then yeah he does and I'd then guess that Trell is likely Dalinar working for Odium on Scadrial as Odium is likely still scared of Sazed. (oh and just to point it out here so I can say "told ya so" the main antagonist is NOT Odium. We only just met her in book 4 guys but we've heard a lot about her before now)
    Moash is going to die- by Kaladin's hands - and it'll be his struggle in book 5 to realise what Honour is and to accept it. Moash has made his choices and is too prideful to accept when he made a mistake, he isn't going to turn from Odium, he'll want to become one of the Fused so he can fight eternally. (won't happen Odium will just refuse it as he'll see the man as a failure and discard him like Taravargian does for everything not working out perfectly)
    Do not disagree at all with number 5, fits perfectly as we've already got one group who are likely already on the "listeners" side rather than the "singers" side in the Skybreakers (they side with the original rulers of Roshar) and with who I think the main threat'll be for the series, we already known who their generals are going to be and who the REAL bad guys are.

    1. Shallan and Adolin under the guidance of Restares try to find the unmade Ba-ado-Mishram before the ghostbloods do.
    2. Szeth's past will be revealed via flashbacks. I guess he will take revenge against the Shin. Also probably there might be Szeth vs Skybreakers under Nale in Shinovar. Also Szeth will take his next oath in front of Ishar.
    3. Most of the listeners might end up being Willshapers
    4. Dalinar will be forced into a situation which is emotionally devastating for him
    5. Atleast 1 of the 4 remaining female heralds will be revealed

    I do not see Kaladins death. He has grown and is on a good arc to be killed, doing so would demoralise the reader similar to the arrival of Negan in walking dead. He has achieved a lot and I anticipate him reaching the 5th ideal in the second part of the series.
    Dalanar Looses. I feel this is quite likely. It would be hard for us readers but a strong story to follow with Dalanar working with TerOdion (sitting by the fire filled with hate).
    As a side, I think we should expect something terrible will happen to Wit in the next book. A shredding of his abilities and powers? A lose of his mind? Killed by another?

    Im waiting for the cosmere shattering event that causes all the worlds from all the separate series coming into the story of Stormlight Archive. This will likely happen in book 5. We have been seeing more and more instances of workshopping getting a focus like in book four of StormLight, so slowly but surely the other worlds will become involved in major ways moving forward.

    I loved non-combatant kaladin in book 4. Him helping with therapy sessions was such a brilliant move and something I had not read before. I would be so disappointed if he died and didn’t continue being a force toward positive mental health. Also, I think Dalinar will die and I think Moash will be a more important character for the future than 99% of characters going forward. He’s a foil for kaladin and may end up being a “final boss” of sorts. And yes I think moash would be a final boss more than taravodium would be.

      So Taravangian was always crafty and willing to do unspeakably evil acts in the name of what's good. So with him becoming the new Vessel of Odium, I'm very concerned and not very confident he'll end up being good.

    here are my theories/ hunches (also keep in mind i don’t know that much about the cosmere)
    I think the twist in book five will change how we as an audience view the conflict on Roshar, so i completely agree that the enlightened singer/radiant group will become VERY relevant in the later books. fundamentally, the stormlight books are about colonialism and the complexities of such a topic in a real or fantasy setting. If the back half books continued to follow the same Singer/Human conflict presented in the earlier books, i don’t think the nuance brandon wants to portrayed would be shown. the war and shards themselves could change a lot in the fifth book, and i think they’ll be developed in a completely different direction when it comes to who is the real “good guys”. I don’t know how exactly that would happen but it would leave the first stormlight pentalogy on a bittersweet note and leave the latter pentalogy to explore even more.
    but i don’t think the change in book 5 will be dalinar’s “death” but rather his displacement, especially if he still exists, but not able to affect anything in a meaningful way for now. if he was apart from the conflict then many characters could develop a lot more (adolin and renarin especially, but the kholins and alethkar as a whole honestly). i know it wouldn’t make much sense for the “final battle” to be prolonged any further, so Dalinar neither dying not winning wouldn’t make much sense. if dalinar won there would still be issues to fix, but if he lost then the narrative would lose so much. this is all to say i’m lost on Dalinars place in book 5 and the final battle with odium.
    also i keep trying to convince myself that kaladin will live, mainly bc he still has the potential to accomplish a lot (in terms of helping others). kal was fulfilled from acting as a therapist, but he still has work to do, despite reaching a place where he is okay mentally.
    but i guess we never know until we read book 5 huh? anyway i liked watching ur video and i’m really excited for book 5

    Kaladin:
    1 - Wouldn't it be more like Sanderson to explore a character who are forced to go against what they're good at. This is a newer, less tread-upon storyline. Also, he can still have a big fight, win or flee and live.
    2 - This is why he needs to live. We've never seen a major character give up violence and be true to it, especially if Kaladin keeps that up for the 15 years during the storyline gap
    3 - An arc can change or twist just like any storyline. Moving on is just a step in the middle of a larger story arc.
    4 - Brandon will not, does not have to, and does not like to cut a cast of characters for any reason. His books and character lists are long, his fans like it and he needs it for his stories.
    5 - Agreed. But I think if we are saying this, it's probably too obvious for Sanderson to do.
    Shallan:
    1 - Agreed. But I believe this is this majority consensus.
    Dalinar:
    1 - Agreed but I'm not sure Dalinar loses is the only outcome besides Dalinar wins. There are so many scenarios or events that could occur that would change everything about the contest and how we view it and its outcomes.
    Moash:
    No comments.
    New Group:

    There is a misunderstanding of the deal that Odium and Dalinar come to at the end of RoW here. The final deal they strike is not that Odium will leave Roshar. It's that the war will stop regardless, and that Odium will not leave the Rosharan system. If Odium wins, he will keep Alethkar and Herdaz and will get Dalinar's soul to be his general. If Dalinar wins, Alethkar and Herdaz will be returned to the humans, and Dalinar will be free.
    I still feel like Odium winning will be the better narrative choice, but the evidence put forward here isn't as strong.

    Dunno. Kaladin's whole arc in the series is about him *not* dying even though he sometimes really wants it. I don't see him eventually "succeeding" at it, even in a heroic fashion, as a satisfying end for his arc. I can, however, totally see Syl dying instead (by getting stabbed with anti-stormlight), so Kaladin's arc finishes with him living through the loss of his closest friend and then going into full retirement, while helping people however he can.

    I can see Kaladins ark ending in a sacrifice, that would fit his character. Though I think it is still too early for him to go, because I see another possibility for him to develop. When looking at Adolin, it is pretty much a given, that he manages to revive Maya. I believe there is a possibility that the radiants start to care for and revive the other deadeyes after learning of Maya's resurrection. And who would be better suited for that than Kaladin himself with his therapy ark in book 4. After saving and helping humans, saving and helping himself, it is now time for him to save spren. I can see him going to lasting integrity and setting up shop to tend to the deadeyes. Also with his own experiences with Syl and straining their own bond, he may find a way to restore them (maybe getting humans that wield their shards to the spren and tending to them).
    Another argument against his death is that there is still a fifth ideal. Could sacrificing himself for others be a kind of fifth ideal? Though what is the point if he were to die then?
    That is why I'd rather go with him helping spren and reaching the fifth ideal maybe before a death far away. (Maybe also some wishthinking as Kaldin/Syl and Adolin/Maya are my favourite characters)
    Regarding Shallan, I completely agree with you. Also with Adolin's path of restoring Maya, he may help her with that. I think he is the perfect character for the part of restoring the broken bond between humans and spren.
    Dalinar loosing is also a good point. I also believe that with Taravangian being Odiums vessel that this must not necessarily be a bad thing, at least not in the beginning. There will be some kind of peace between humans and singers and Odium will actually not be the antagonist but something in between as Taravangian tries to do good and save Roshar with his powers. Maybe there will be a new threat, something from off world or something completely different.
    I don't think there needs to be a third party. Though the fight may change from radiants against singers to radiants & singers against fuzed and their loyalists, so that both sides will be more intermixed and the conflict will become more complex. Adolin may be working to find a lasting peace as Dalinars successor while Dalinar is working with Taravangian in the greater scheme.
    The aftermath of the duel will also create a new situation. Maybe some of the fuzed, namely El will rebel against Taravangian as Odium as he tries to work against the nature of his shard.
    A romantic relationship between Rlein and Renarin seems pretty weird and unnecessary to me. I would rather see them develop a deep friendship or some kind of student/ mentor relationship, maybe also with both tutoring the other and working as intermediaries between races.
    Oops that was long but I had to get it off my chest ;).

      Oh and also no redemption for Moash, he went too far and I don't see the others forgiving him. The only "redemption way" out for him would be as a sacrifice for the greater good. Maybe as you suggested for Kaladin, now that would be something.

    Had no idea why Taravangian was this Taravodium, until it clicked it my head. That took an embarrassingly long time. - / / / -
