Making masala fried sardines we got in Shallcross yesterday!

  • Hi all
We are down in Durban for the long weekend. Before we left we got news of a number of shoals that were netted along the KZN coast so we decided we will go looking for them. Just as we arrived in Shallcross we heard the van going past with some (not so fresh) sardines. We decided to get some just in case we didn't find any ourselves. We went out this morning and couldn't track where the shoals were, stopping at Amanzimtoti and Warner beach and getting news that Winklespruit was also a no show.
So we got back to Shallcross and marinated and fried up the one we got yesterday!
    Ingredients
    12 sardines
    Marinated with
    1 tbs chillie powder
    1/2 tbs crushed garlic
    1 tbs lemon juice
    1/2 tbs salt
    2 tbs oil
We usually eat sardines with fresh soft white bread or with dhal and rice.

Wow Pranesh and mum traveled all the way from Jhb for the sardine run. Atleast you got to buy some sardines. Every year we enjoyed watching the sardines comes to the shores in Toti as we lived there previously. Last 3yrs we missed out on the action as we relocated home. Crispy and delicious, you did such a great job, MA!❤

No offense but no old person grew up in Durban taking out the heads off sardines. I grew up in natal live in Cape Town and say this all the time keep to tridiagonal ways. Great recipe for those that don't know how to fry them. Be safe and God bless 🙏

    • @GaithreeDeviLuckan
      @GaithreeDeviLuckan  ปีที่แล้ว

No offense taken. We grew up in Sezala and sardines were plentiful so my mom would not cook the sardines with the head on as it was just easier. So for my family at least this is how we would always do it.

We haven't tried because like pranesh says there are so many bones in the sardines, getting them all out to used the meat in fishcakes will be difficult.
We made fishcakes with middle cut mackerel and they came out very good.

So regarding the bones/thorns, i normally soak the sardines in vinegar for 5min before marinating it as this process will make the bones/thornes so crispy that you dont need to sift the fish removing the thorns/bones as it all get crispy enough to eat. you will only be left with the centre bone.....try it😃...why work hard removing thorns when eating.
