  • Vocal Coach Reaction to Stone Temple Pilots - Scott Weiland- Plush - Ken Tamplin
Guys I wanted to share with you my latest reaction for the song Plush by Stone Temple Pilots.
STP was fronted by the late Scott Weiland who was known for constantly changing his vocal style and appearance.
Criticized by some for his onstage persona, Weiland was known to be both flamboyant and chaotic with a personality akin to Jim Morrison.
Interestingly enough, Weiland has been quoted as saying “Jim Morrison was a huge inspiration and influence on me, probably for better and for worse."
Stone Temple Pilots bassist Robert DeLeo wrote the riff for Plush in the back of a U-Haul truck that the band was using. The song’ s instantly recognizable chord structure was inspired by DeLeo’s love of Ragtime music.
The lyrics for the song were inspired by an “unfortunate news story” in Weiland’s hometown and were written in a hot tub by Weiland and drummer Eric Kretz.
Weiland described the song which won a Grammy for Best Hard Rock performance, as “a metaphor for a lost obsessive relationship”.
I personally love the Led Zepplin inspired intro which was in STARK contrast to what many of the bands were doing at that time.
Check out my REACTION to the song and let me know your thoughts!

His story is so tragic, just like the other gods of this era. It's crazy to think that Eddy is the only one left of the big 4. Scott is one of my all time favorite singers. Tremendous skill and talent, and his gritty tone always seemed so effortless.

I absolutely LOVE Weiland's vocals. A couple of great songs from STP are Interstate love song, and Big Empty. His depth in 'Big empty' is just amazing. STP, Nirvana and Pearl Jam were my childhood. Have every album from each band and STILL rock them out today! Legendary music like this never grows old.

If you have time, check out Scott Weiland singing with the Doors or covering the Doors, whichever. Dude was a vocal chameleon in my opinion. I'm no expert though obviously.

    • @Soaptoaster
      @Soaptoaster 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Big Empty for a time was probably my a top five all-time modern rock track ever. It has a soulful beauty, bluesy sadness and poetic lyrics. There are so few bands that care that much about the small things in crafting a complex song that periodically explodes into a bombastic chorus. The sign of any good song is how well does it stand the test of time and that song has aged like a fine wine.
I remember when Fall To Pieces came out, I remember loving the changing shift in Weiland's vocal approach with that epic rock wail. You can hear the struggle and woe in his voice there and the FTP video was a sad foreshadow of what was to come.

Started to fall in love to Kurt, then later got hooked to Eddie's style of story telling, I then abused ny ears to Layne's tone. Last months, I have been enjoying Chris's range. Here I am loving Scott's natural raspy voice. Not mentioning his stage aura, I love his songs.

I love how Scott seemed to really develop the vibrato in his voice in the back end of his career. The distortion in his voice was always present due to him being a heavy smoker but the vibrato seems more pronounced in this concert. Another brilliant review Ken, keep em coming! 🤟🤟🤟

Scott’s voice didn’t fair well after all the drug use. The early years he was a monster vocalist. Unplugged was the prime. The acoustic version of Plush would be a great reaction. STP was such a tight group of talented musicians. Good stuff, Ken.

Hey Ken, been watching your videos for quite some while. Weiland died on my birthday, and Slash, being my hero, introduced me to Scott and grunge etc.
I would like to request one song for you to cover or react, because I find it's quite harsh vocalvise and though I am a guitar player myself, I find it intriguing how singers evolves. This one example is Sebastian Bach of Skid Row. He started as a angelic voice of glam rock, but went harsher and harsher, and I really love when singers put more on the record than they actually feel comfortable with.
This song is called Beat yourself blind - Skid Row. U can really hear the downfall of his abilities within the anger that he feels inside and it really works out great in my opinion.
Im not an Englishman, thats why my vocabulary is what it is, but hopefully you read this and give it a try, because I would really like to know what a professional like you thinks about that song.
Cheers Ken, and keep doing what you do, people love it ;)
