  • Individually, I've heard Scott Weiland on a few Stone Temple Pilots tracks, and of course Slash, Duff McKagan, and Matt Sorum from Guns & Roses. And having talked with Myles Kennedy extensively in a tea time about his offer to front Velvet Revolver and turning it down, it's just been an itch I knew I needed to scratch at some point. And here we are! What a rollercoaster this one is!

Scott made it to 48, which is something of a miracle. He was a man who was not likely to make it to 30. He was on the Howard Stern show one time and just picked up a gas mask and put it on to start a song, and it was just epic. What a performer. RIP

After that I was making monthly visits to the hospital after bingeing so I could get ativan so it could ease my hangovers. They were getting so bad I was getting very scared I was on my way out. Slash has an amazing ability to weave his guitar around the vocals in a way that almost makes it another voice. Not quite a harmony, but a counterpoint. When I was in music school, I learned the language to speak of things I only intuitively knew, but couldn't put into words. I imagine his guitar like a dragon flying around the serpent of the vocal line. They dance around each other and it's wondrous to behold.

The members of Velvet Revolver had been through wild bouts of drug addiction and alcoholism which in many ways were the byproduct of the rock stardom they experienced with their previous bands (Scott Weiland was ex-Stone Temple Pilots; Slash, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum were in Guns N' Roses).
"Fall to Pieces" relates to their tribulations, specifically those of Weiland, who wrote the lyric. He said the song deals with two issues:
    1) Coming to terms with his heroin addiction.
    2) His relationship with his second wife, Mary, which was falling apart.
In both cases, Weiland felt like he was "falling to pieces."

Scott was an incredible singer and songwriter. Even though he was a prominent figure in the 90’s rock scene I still don’t think he gets enough credit for his work. People always talk about Cornell, Staley, and Veder during that era. Rarely do you hear mention of Scott. Weiland was right there with them. RIP legend

It's been a rough ride as a fan of all these grunge bands, seeing so many of the singers leave us. What's worse, I remember all the criticism they took for being miserable and having depressing lyrics. Well, yes. They were depressed and using music as a release. That's not to say the choice to get help isn't ultimately their own, but compassion would be more helpful than judgement. I read Scott Weiland's book 'Not Dead and Not for Sale' shortly after his passing and the disappointment he felt in himself for never staying clean was heartbreaking.

Ian Thornley, of Big Wreck and Thornley, was contacted twice by the guys forming Velvet Revolver to try out. The first time he declined because he was working on a Thornley album. The second time was after Scott was fired. He went and jammed with the guys and had a good experience but management wanted him to front with no guitar. He says maybe when he was younger but now set in his ways he didn't want to ditch the guitar. In retrospect he's never wanted to be "that guy" and isn't the 'peacock' type. He never set out to sing and didn't know he could sing like he does. Coincidentally his good friend Myles Kennedy was also asked to try out but now plays on occasion with Slash. It's a small world!

The rock songs of really outstanding singers are so full of pain and the gift they give us , helps keep us smiling and functioning when they couldn't .
