To be fair, the NBA has a different rules set to more appropriately fit their players enhanced ability and increase the entertainment value for their viewers.
Is there a way to send this to every AAU official across the country? Kids dribbling have picked up such an advantage getting away with their hand underneath the ball. As kids seem to be getting better and better, this makes it even tougher on defenders. Great video!
Good information; however, it's more simple than what's provided. Quite simply, of the hand is more than a handshake (90 deg), then it's a carry. This is the nfhs axiom for carry or no carry. Beyond 90 deg, the hand becomes part of the "south equator" of the ball. Aka '"under the ball".
In the last example it appears the player takes multiple steps before he puts it back on the floor. I may be wrong but the way I was taught this could be a carry or travel
I'd also make the argument that the player at 2:02 double dribbled. He catches the pass, hops with both feet, then begins his dribble. His dribble should have been dead when he hopped after catching the ball.
Its okey to palm the ball a little bit while dribbling. Everybody does that if you play it in slow motion. Then its kinda awkward if you dribble the ball all palm down.
Such infraction was the regular habit of Michael Jordan. His palming is what gave him such incredible ball control. And this is an infraction that is rarely called and this is especially so in the case of a "superstar."
You could call a travel or even an illegal dribble if you wanted to, as they both technically happen, but usually, when a player palms the ball, causing it to come to rest in between dribbles, a carry is the more appropriate ruling, and typically easier to understand by the player and the coach.
You mean putting his hand under the ball for a cross over that looks exactly like AI??? Oh yea any rule change, bend, overlook to sell tickets .. this is why you cant compare different eras.
As I grew up ..the definition of paling the ball ,was defined as : four or more fingers " below the equator " of the ball . And continuing.. as such ,all I see now a day's is every player on the N B A , puts the whole hand completely underneath the ball ,pauses and makes a move . W T F.
Great examples. It befuddles me that the NBA ignores these fundamental rules.

These videos are very helpful. Always good to see game footage to help with situations.
Glad you think so!
Liked the clarification on palming the ball and what to look out for in helping making the call
Thanks for watching.
Excellent examples! I appreciate the explanation and close-up review of each play.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video for young officials, as well as veterans...
Much appreciated. Thanks for watching.
And yet you see this at the highest level. The NBA allows everything. It's like a Giannis highlight reel these violations
Unfortunately, this is the case and it trickles down to the youth who try to emulate their sports heroes. Thanks for watching.
@@OfficialsInstitute so did pete maravich travel? I dont think so
Glad that carrying the ball is a point of emphasis for 2020, as it is truly a nonlegal way for the dribbler to gain an unfair advantage.
Let's hope officials are willing to call this consistently as a group. If we do, the players will adjust and the game will improve.

Wish there was. Thanks for watching.
Yeah I mean pretty much every player on every play carries or palms the ball. It's gotten so out of hand and is NEVER called.

Nicely done. Very helpful.
Glad it was helpful!

There is no player control during an interrupted dribble therefore the few steps taken are irrelevant
Good informational video.
Glad it was helpful!

Or does he hop and catch the ball with both feet off the floor. Very hard to tell, even in slow motion.
Great video...
Thanks!

There is definitely nuance in this rule, but as it is written, any time the ball comes to rest in a players hand(s), it is a carry violation.

Agreed, however, I’m sure the NBA has its own way of ruling on these types of plays.
The examples shown in the video is going to be very easy to make the correct calls this season
I hope they truly gave you the ability to recognize these fouls easier in the future.
Great video
Glad you enjoyed it.
Why is that second example not simply a travel?

Should have been called in the NCAA San Diego semi final at the buzzer shot!
Thnx for watching
Who do you think is the biggest offender of carrying in the NBA?
No opinion. We focus on High School basketball. Thanks for watching.

NBA is a whole nother monster.
Carrying & palming the ball is the standard for all players at the NBA & Collegite level. It's an absolute joke
Very much accepted these days
None of these plays would be called a violation in the NBA. In a typical game, the refs could easily call 50 violations if they adhered to the rules.
Agreed.
Palming looks awful but is all but allowed in today's NBA.
Agreed. NBA allows many moves and plays that is not allowed at the high school level.
jerry reedy likes this video and Lou's pizza
Thanks for watching. Not long now to the pizza drawing.
it seems to me that palming/pocket dribbles, and traveling are ruining the NBA. Am I within my rights to say that?
You are, by I wouldn’t know the answer. I stopped watching the NBA years ago.
@@OfficialsInstitute yeah I feel you. Way too many Blacks in the NBA
Do the NBA
Thanks for watching.
