    I saw a scammer doing this trick in NYC, playing for money. Whenever someone chose a shell, he would say, "this one?" and roll it slightly backward and forward. The person would say yes, and of course he would turn it over and the pea would not be under there. By rolling the shell every time before turning it over (thereby removing the pea), he guaranteed that the person would always be wrong, even if they caught him switching the shells earlier.

    In my country, those who deal with it for money have tactics to gather a lot of people around them, 3-4 of whom are their "players" who mostly hit and the one who "plays with shells" pays them big money. I watched one who did it for 2 hours, and concluded that in that period of tens of thousands of euros turned, he i.e. "they" earned maybe 200, which is in fact a nice salary for such a little work.

      I once saw this done in Budapest on a beautiful sunny day. I believe it was near Buda Castle with plenty of tourists around. There was for sure an accomplice in the crowd who kept playing and "losing" lots of money by constantly picking the shell that was "obviously" the wrong one. He was there to make the game look extra easy and to bait tourist into stepping in so they could pick the "obviously" correct shell. He also kept money in the pot. There was another big guy in the crow who looked a little fishy and we believed at the time that he was blocking certain visual angles. We kept walking around and a little later we saw FIVE guys hurrying towards a tiny car, cramming in and driving off. We recognised the trickster, the guy who kept losing and the big chap, but had no idea there had been two more in the crowd the whole time.

      I've watched the dealer ensuring the "marked" player (an obvious tourist) wins a few times, by showing the pea under the cup as it's moved, to make the player confident; then the heavies move in to box in the player, who then cannot leave, and they keep them playing & betting, then losing, just long enough to earn back what was initially lost (on purpose) plus a little more. Quite a good little scam.

    The shysters who perform this trick in major tourist areas for money actually move the shells around closer to their end of the table, where - thru the same sleight of hand - they actually take the pea and drop it off the table onto their lap instead of putting it into another shell, so that if you're the sucker who just laid down hard cash, it's automatically lost - even if you try to pick another shell where logic dictates it isn't, as in the above video.

If you fully pay attention to what the trickster is stating, he's only asking you to "guess where the pea is", or with the more misleading instruction of "guess which shell the pea is under" - making that request the sole subject matter of the situation (only your "guess" - with absolutely nothing mentioned by him regarding his own actions). IOW, he will never tell you that the pea will specifically be under one of the 3 shells after he does the shuffle. In certain seedy underbelly portions of the US, the shell game is replaced by 3 card Monte. I watched and warned many military compatriots not to play, Of course, they did anyway. Marines, stay away from Oceanside, in Cali. Or at least be aware that there is more going on under the cover of darkness than you realize, especially at the bus station near the strip joint.
    I spent most of my time at Pendleton just trying to keep my nose clean, while spending weekends out in town, going to the comic shop, Sharky's pizza shop (or was it Shakey's? The manager had a bit of the shakes, whether that was from a medical condition or drinking, I have no clue) or going to the hotel "Dolphin" just to get off base and sleep like a normal MF'er back home.

    I used to often watch these scammers in NYC ply their dishonest trade. Sometimes someone would actually choose the correct shell, in which case they would still not let you win. They would just continue the game and talk over you. One time I saw a female play the game, somehow they paid her win of $20 and were sure she would lose much more by continued play, but she walked away a winner. Well these miserable thugs usually have cohorts stationed nearby in both directions. So a cohort saw this girl was walking away as a winner; he quickly tripped her so she fell flat on the sidewalk, injuring her. This is how these lowlifes play this game.

    • @KpxUrz5745
      @KpxUrz5745 ปีที่แล้ว

      Another trick these lowlifes use: If you put your money down on the wrong shell, of course they snap up your cash and open the shells, proving you picked wrong. But if you put money on the correct shell, they have a way to keep talking and keep reshuffling the shells. They do anything in order to never have to pay you. There is not a shred of honesty or fairness about this game. They are simply the lowest form of thugs and thieves.

    • @rastapete100
      @rastapete100 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The shell game isn't dishonest. There is no rule that says the pea won't be moved. You just assume it can't be. Not paying someone who picks the right one is dishonest though.

    So the key is to look for if a shell is moving bakcwards. I wonder if there is a way to transfer the object to the other hand. Because as you said noone picks that one. Could you move all 3 with the same hand.
    could a scammer actually remove the oject in one hand and have another object hidden in the other hand to start with.

    So the pea is always in a shell you touched/moved last, does it mean I can always win?
    So to make "fake" move you need to slide the shell back to cover the exposed pee? Or just move the shell backwards?

    What they do over here is that the ball is usually made of foam, so it's even easier to take it in/out of the shell or conceal in hand. And after he finishes the trick, the ball is in his hand, not under any of the shells! So, depending on which shell you put your money on he'll then pick any other. That's why they never let YOU to open the shell where the ball "is".

    In Spain (and I guess in other places too), the trick is slightly different: no matter which shell you choose, the pea won't be there. It's not that you choose the wrong shell. EVERY shell is wrong, so you can never win. Rather than a magic trick, it's a scam.
