If I'm in a triple threat position can I keep dribbling? Also if I catch the ball while dribbling, and dribble again is that a double dribble? Im confused on what a double dribble is.
I'm not sure I understand your questions. What do you mean by a "triple threat?" "Catch the ball while dribbling?" If you are dribbling then stop dribbling by catching the ball, you cannot dribble again.
Thank you for this video, it is very helpful! But one question: in the situation at 4:33, after the ball was fumbled without control could the player theoretically slap the top of the ball/dribble it with ONE hand while it is bouncing or rolling on the ground (or even after it comes to a complete stop on the ground) to continue a live dribble? On one hand I would think yes since he never had control for the dribble to end and then never picks it up with 2 hands, but on the other you said at 4:42 that the dribble "still ends" even if there is loss of control (thus implying no further dribbling at all, even with one hand). Thanks in advance!
In the fourth video clip, the ball touches the defenders foot. Since 9.5.2 says this is one of the acceptable situations where a dribbler CAN dribble a second time, this play is legal. Hope that helps.
@@OfficialsInstitute yes, it helps! Thanks for the clear explanation for this situation. However, I have the same situation as the comment below. If a ball handler ends his dribble, couldn’t shoot or pass. Then he finds a defender, intentionally and lightly throws the ball to the defender’s back. Could he start a new dribble since the ball has made contact with others. In my opinion, I consider it legal. What do you think?
9.5.3 says "a pass or fumble which has then touched, or been touched by, another player." And since the definition of a pass is not restricted to a teammate, this would be a legal play.
@@OfficialsInstitute nice! I think it right. Thank you so much for the answers. This situation has been discussed in our basketball club for 3 days. And I’ve been searching for the similar videos, only those NBA players with thrower-in situation. Many of them throw ball to opponent’s back because opponents want the thrower can’t pass the ball so that he will violate 5-second rule. Turns out they were so focused defending and forgot their back...😄
First question: Can you still establish a pivot foot after recovering a fumbled ball? Second question: if i possessed the ball on a hustle, can i stand up without dribbling the ball?
If a ball is fumbled, it is a loss of control and therefore a new pivot foot may be established. A player who has grabbed the ball and established control “on the ground” may not stand up without a violation occurring. If that player still has a dribble available to them, they may start a dribble and stand up while dribbling without penalty.
What if you accidentally mis-dribble the ball against a part of your body like your hip, you thigh , your back ( on a behind the back wrap around ) … can you continue your dribble or do you have to pick it up and pass it? … it’s a common thing and people continue dribbling
@@OfficialsInstitutelike you pin it up against your body but only for a split second due to a mis-dribble, but then the ball drops and bounces quickly and you continue to dribble with one hand.. you never touched it with 2 hands… it only came to a quick halt because of the mid-dribble pin against the body for a split second… It’s legal to then continue dribble as long as you don’t recover with 2 hands and then try to continue your dribble?
When my teammates passes the ball to me and im at a stop not moving is it a carry if i hold the the ball in the air palming it with one hand preventing the player from getting it and im trying to look for a pass is that a carry ive seen players do that before note im not moving doing it just my arm
@@OfficialsInstitute I think he means for example you are dribbling, stop and hold the ball with 2 hands and then bounce the ball off the opponent get it back and start dribbling again.
@@810ych yeah I would say so, but maybe in the rule books there is something that prevents exploiting this, like when you throw the ball while you're falling out of bounds, and hit the opponent in the legs, if you do this in another situation or with too much force, I think it could be called for something, but I don't really know :D
It seems to me by reading some of of these replies and by reffing HS games over the years a lot of players simply do not know some of the basic rules of basketball. coaches need to teach players the rules in addition to teaching plays. I think games would be a lot smoother and maybe there would be a lot less conflict between players coaches and officials! Players just don't know Basic Rules of Basketball
The first offense was called double dribble because after he dribble by his right hand and touch(received by right hand) he unintentionally pass the ball to his left hand. It's not carry or palming because it was a live ball.
Yes. Assuming the player was first dribbling the ball, as soon as the player picks up the ball with two hands, the dribbler has ended and therefore cannot start dribbling a second time.
An illegal dribble is based on a dribble ending and beginning. So, yes, if a dribble ends in one hand and then starts again from the same hand, it can still be an illegal dribble.
You could call this carry if you felt it better explains what happened, however, we feel this is more appropriately categorized as an illegal dribble. Thanks for watching.
Im still not understanding. How is it that you can’t dribble, grab the ball with 2 hands and continue dribbling, but you can catch a pass with 2 hands then dribble. Hell I see pros grab it with 2 hands and continue their drive to the net while dribbling. This rule makes absolutely no sense.
If you dribble once and grab it with two hands, your dribble is over and cannot dribble a second time. If you catch a pass with two hands, you can dribble because you haven’t yet dribbled for a first time.
i still dont get that in some of these vids the players is holding the ball with 2 hands, trying to find an opening for a pass and then starts dribbling again, and its not double dribble
Not sure what you are referring to. All the clips in this rule review segment are explained as to why a play was or was not correctly called. Do you have a specific play you’re confused about? We’re happy to review and provide further explanation if needed.
@@OfficialsInstitute it’s weird that when someone dribbles then picks it up with 2 hands to pass like at 4:30, but then if it’s deemed a fumble then they can go recover it but if it’s not deemed a fumble then they can’t recover it. Why are you just not penalize whether it’s a fumble or not. That leaves too much to discretion and it could be a bail out for the player. It’s all based on the ref and what they’d like to call almost. Also, the kickball rule is tricky. Because if the offensive player throws it off the defense foot that’s not intentional by the defender but oftentimes the offense gets the ball back… in this video while the defense was sliding and the ball went off his foot it was deemed not a kickball … basketball rules are iffy man

When the player touches it with two hands, by rule the dribble ends, regardless of fumble status or not.

If I start to dribble then pick it up but the defender touches the ball can I dribble after he touches the ball while I’m holding it
No. The touch must make the player lose control.
@@OfficialsInstitute thx cuz me and my step bro were arguing bout it (I was right)
On the fumble example it looks like the defender gets his hand on the ball from behind that that contributes to the fumble.
You could be right.
how about losing control of the ball during a dribble.
& you palm it or pick it up with 1 hand.
can you still dribble ??

Carrying the ball is a dribbling principle so if you are holding the ball it cannot be considered a carry violation.
What if I stop my dribble and a defender knocks the ball out of my hand can I pick it up and start a new dribble
Yes. If a player loses control because an opponent touches the ball, a new dribble may be started.
During a legal dribble, can the ball bounce twice between touches?
Yes. The number of bounces is not relevant to a dribble.
If a player intentionally taps the ball to an opponent when he stops his dribble to start a new dribble, is it a dribbling violation?
Not sure what you are asking. Can you provide further clarification?
