DOWNSWING: The Eureka Move

- If you are trying to rotate in the downswing then you need to STOP! One of the most common issues I see is golfers don't prioritise the correct downswing movements.
In todays video I'm going to show you how maintaining great hip depth will natrually produce the rotation you desire, shallow the club and give you loads of space. This is a key move every top golfer in the world does in their golf swing and you need to do it too!
For more golf swing tips and guidance, make sure to explore my golf channel. And as always, feel free to suggest any other golf-related topics about which you would like me to create videos.

I was given this lesson nearly 10 years ago & since then I haven’t ever thought about downswing rotation!
“Eureka” my “Nemesis”! You’re speaking my language… I mean literally 😂 I need to work really hard on this move which I find difficult but I’m hoping to get there one day. Thank you, Coach!
@@miketsirogiannis9206 good luck! I hope this helps!
this is a good explanation. The key thing is that your right hip HAS TO COME OFF THE WALL for the left hip to move back. You cant do one without the other. Too many other videos talk about just keeping your hips back and its impossible to get left hip depth without letting your right hip rotate out. Just don't "hump" the ball.
Exactly that!
Yes but the right hip shouldn't get closer to the ball through impact.
My golf has been pretty rubbish of late, played today trying out this drill , shot my best round for 20 years. The amazing thing was i did not think about anything but this drill in the swing and literally hit everything out the middle.
Wow that’s amazing! Glad I could help you shoot your lowest score in 20 years!
First rate golf instruction content Giles. Simple, easily digested, memorable. Sincere thanks!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video
Another really good video Giles.
I must say again, you have such a gift for breaking things down and explaining them in a clear, concise and easy to understand manner.
I've been a subscriber from the early days on this channel, and it's awesome to see the rapid growth in your numbers.
Keep them coming mate.
Thank you Shaun! Great to hear you’re following along with the journey
Incredible! I’ve seen hundreds of videos saying turn, turn, turn. I always swing over the top when this happens. This just makes way more sense to me. Thank you
Thank you mate!
Turning is great but where do you turn from? I realized I was trying to turn with my trail hip, and it would make me lose my balance and stand up. Once I started throwing my lead knee at my target in the downswing it caused my turn to happen with the lead leg….changed my world.
@@AlphaPoppa38 lead knee moves as a byproduct of pressing into the left leg
@@Gilesgillgolf Sounds right, the feeling for me was turning with my lead hip instead of trying to rotate with my trail hip.

Great interpretation for effective swing thought. Allows natural shallowing of the club from the top due to clearance in swing path cause by the hip depth. Easy thought to remember this way!!!!!

Incredibly important video! Absolutely revealing the pro secrets here.

Great video and tip Giles. Thank you. As someone who has played this game we love for over 40 years I still get excited when I see something untried. I’m not hitting off scratch anymore however still have a single digit handicap (with both hips being replaced) so looking forward testing this out. Just subscribed. 👍😎🇦🇺
Amazing! Thank you for subscribing
Love this swing thought. That’s for sharing.
No problem
Excellent suggestion and demonstration Giles on your " Eureka Move!" This "squat move" that you are suggesting be emphasized more than rotation is an interesting one! I can see, where if this move is done properly, it would help to generate rotation! It would also help to keep the golfer from "standing up" in the transition to the downswing! Something to think about! Well Done Giles!
Exactly that! I don’t even see it as a squat, I see it more as pushing the hips back so I can keep it as simple as possible
Excellent tip at 3:00 worked great for me today, with my irons. Thank you!
Great to hear!
That's a great drill for me. I've been taught the reverse K right sided swing method by my pro recently , because I have a really bad hip, but it doesn't work at all for the driver, so now, when I go for the driver, I've got a horrible slice that's come into my game, instead of the straight or draw shot I used to get. It's hard to have one swing for one club and another for others, but this drill could just save my driver again! Thank you for making the video!
Sounds like there could be other issues at play here
Hi mate just want to say this is the best tip I’ve ever had. Been trying it and it’s so simple to do. My swing and ball striking is much better. Currently playing off 9. Hopefully lower it in the new season. Thanks again 👍🏽

Really appreciate this mental model. As a beginner I’ve been struggling with the concept of hitting down but this makes a lot more sense to me. Hopefully this will help reduce my topping.
I do have videos on what the correct way to hit down is so go check them out
Recently learned this myself. It makes so much sense and helps a ton. Butt on the wall is a good thing to practice at home. Keep that butt on the wall and get rid of early extension and get shallow much easier.
Glad this helped!

A very simple explanation of the kinematic sequence and the relationship (separation) between the pelvis and the thorax. For those with reasonable hip flexibility and right hip anterior tilt, squatting is definitely a necessary movement during the downswing to create the “space” for the hand path as well as avoid the dreaded pelvic thrust (aka early extension ) but for those who over-squat, the risk of S-posture when the hips are pushed back too deep will adversely limit the rotation, particularly from P6 to Impact.
It’s a subtle movement, doesn’t need to be over done
This is what Mike Malaska said his good friend Jack Niclaus always worked on , & Tiger btw , he said they were always thinking about right butt cheek back , left butt cheek back. Good stuff man , just subscribed.
Also Greg Normans best swing thought was R.P.B. ( right pocket back )
That’s amazing! Thanks for sharing these swing thoughts from the greats
Thanks!
Thank you!!!
I practiced this in slow motion in my net all week, I have a tendency to thrust towards the ball in transition - it was tougher to do on the course as ball position must need adjustment as I toe balled a few. How ever in the main it was awesome I seemed to have more power with no effort - the spin seemed to lower on my drives - for me the 50% swings all week will continue. Such a mental door way this for me thank you ❤
Amazing! Keep grinding away as these moves take a while in settle in
I've been working on my out to in swing for a year and nothing has permanently stuck. I have even watched this drill from other coaches with limited success. For some reason, your explanation sparked something in my brain. I have tried everything from rotating different legs, pushing left shoulder up and out, visual and physical aids - nothing worked. I have tried this chair drill into the net and everything you have explained is immediately sticking with positive results. Can't wait to get back to the course and see how this plays out. Well done!
Hope this helps! Also check out my fix your pulls video. That fixes a similar issue too
I see this was done in November 2023. I think you have a more recent one in April 2024 on the same thing, but using the mental image of the left or lead glute pushing back against a hand that is pushing your flute forward. You also explain the role of the left or lead foot exerting horizontal torque to push the left or lead hip back against the hand, which automatically creates rotation. That was a super valuable lesson. Much easier to hold in your mind as you prepare to start your backswing that you will push back with your lead foot on the downswing and that will push the lead hip back automatically, and create rotation automatically. That from the 7:23 ground up sequence works much better than trying to think about pulling the lead hip back all by itself unconnected to foot pressure. Besides, the invisible hand is more fun to have in mind than a clunky chair or a solid wall. !!! Finally, many thanks for both this and the newer one, I put the hand image to work at the indoor practice bay I go to and when done right it adds 2 to 4 mph higher ball speed and 5 - 10 yds more carry with my 7 iron. So thank you.
Great work figuring out what works for your swing
and here is something else awesome - when you maintain hip depth and actually lower your chest to the ground to generate power (the “squat” action all pros and scratch golfers have) your shaft plane will naturally flatten into the ball without any manipulation of wrists, arms - anything. So this advice here is pure gold 👍🏻
Thank you!
Excellent!!
Glad you like it!
Good video. This is tougher than it seems.
It sure is but it’s key. Have more videos coming out on this
Thanks for this video!
Can you give your thoughts on first shifting your weight to your left leg prior to hip rotation?
All technically blends together in a fluid motion but you start to shift back towards the target around chest height or lead arm parallel in the backswing
This may be the best video you've come up with, yet Giles. The chair drill is another drill that creates feels by focusing on a single thing. Your cheeks and your bum!! You certainly are no bum as a golf instructor. In fact, you continue to show that you are the finest golf teacher in the world. So much of proper rotation, footwork, and spine angle in the downswing comes from this position. Once referred to as "The Snead Squat." It is the position every top player gets into that I've ever seen. Without exception. Your focus on this primary position is a fast track to success. Keep sending these marvelous videos. Unrivaled instruction in the world of golf.
Exactly that! The primary movements are the key movements and getting them right sets off a lot of positive chain reactions. Thank you!

Awesome hip depth is now my only swing thought 👌
Amazing
Great video.

If i keep bending my both knees that will take care my both hips touching the wall and then slide towards the target . It helps me to maintain the hips move in a proper way as you described.
If that’s your sensation and it achieves the outcome then great
Best rotation drill ever. Thumbs-up from Korea 😂
Wow, thanks!
Thank you for a clear and concise lesson. One question does this move still apply for chipping and pitching or is a modification required?
This has nothing to do with them as that is a different form of technique
Eureka move indeed! The thought of trying to get open instead of creating space on the downswing is killing my swing.
Exactly! Glad you agree!
Perfect just like the video of Tiger and his exaggerated hip depth routine.

Great video.. I tend to have a 2 way miss lately..slices and hooks and realised Im kicking that back leg out and rotating the back hip too early. Quite often feel like I get stuck which causes a flip and a terrible duck hook. Thank You and Subscribed

After 20 years of not playing golf, I decided to take back to the game I love. BUT omg, I've watch a gazillion videos and practice at a park in a small town for the last three months, hitting 60-70 ball a day. I do not want to go to the course until I can paly relatively good and be confident. SO each video or other pro will tell me different things, do this, not dont do this. Anyway I am anxious to try this tomorrow Giles. Never seen this drill before and just went outside in the freakin dark and grabbed a chair. Tomorrow I will be working on this. I'll let you know what I find. Ive always been a hand/eye swinger and always come over the top no matter what I do. Its driving me nuts that I cant get on an inside path to save my bum. THis tip looks promising. Thanks
I would also make sure your backswing is set up correctly. Often players swing over the top because they have to
Best little tweak tip I've had Giles. i hit the ball with much more control yesterday and it feels weird at first, a grown man like me, trying to twurk on the golf swing. :) But yes it really helped. I am at a little loss for distance, but zero mishits yesterday. My Bum feels it but looking forward to working on this and making sure my path is on. Very true and it is something I struggle with frequently. Hard to fix 30 years of bad habits
It definitely is but make sure there isn’t a root cause issue
Finding out the club really should never stop has worked wonders on my game. It's really you get it going in the take away and allow the club to swing you. If you slice you rotate usually how typical instruction tells you
Exactly that
Never grasped the hip rotation but pushing my left butt cheek (hip) back to start the downswing allowed the club to be delivered in a great position and the thighs together in the follow through. Has improved ball striking considerably, thanks Giles very well explained with the correct feels as usual.
Amazing! Glad it helped!

I had this conscious thought throughout my range session, only been golfing 3 months but I’ve got from on a 7i slicing to around 110 yards to a slight hook as for as 150 yards. Which is bloody amazing, and my fw is all of a sudden easier to hit and I got it to nearly 200 yards today- so thank you. However I am really struggling with driver? Is it the same motion?
It is the same motion however it’s crucial you get your setup right with driver
Great tip for my #1 priority swing fault. Additional question. How should I think about blending this thought/move with shifting to the lead side for compression? Thank you.
Well when you shift/push into your lead leg do you hips go back?
@@Gilesgillgolf yes. I'm also pushing from the inside of my trail foot.
@@jimjanlivin5152 so there’s your answer
Gill...I'm having great success applying this with the mid to long clubs...where I want the power....but for pitches? I don't want to rock the boat with the dead-hand swing...even a 3/4 to full one. Please advise
Pitching is a different motion. See my pitching videos for that
Hey coach! I got to ask this question again on a different video lol.. is the butt move necessary for 40+ yard pitch shots as well?
No it’s not
Really good and simple explanation. Does the same apply to driver?
Yes it does!
@@Gilesgillgolf great, I'll give it a go. Early extension is an issue in my swing which I think leads to toe strikes. Going to try the chair drill and see how that goes. Now subbed to the channel.

I love the shift turn shift principle as ive struggled for years to inderstand how to use the ground esp with all the dribble all the so called pros put out. Ive got the turn aspect of the golf swing down and hit some pretty decent straight drives. I have seen one of your videos where you talk about hinging wrists which was a good video but slightly confused as body rotation for myself takes the feel from my hands to body rotation but deliberately hinging wrist puts the feel into the hands... should the feel be in the core rotation or should the swing be hand feeling driven... or should it he shift - turn/set wrists (and forget wrists) then shift and turn through impact... intetested to know your opinion...
Truthfully it depends on your natural patterns & feels. Some players feel more hands & others use there bodies more
@Gilesgillgolf so there is no correct answer it's all feel driven per individual. Thank you for your response
@@philwilkinson2924 it’s more a case of what you do naturally. If you don’t turn and your very armsy then you need to focus on more body less arms (and Vice versa)
@Gilesgillgolf is there some sort of video/test that you have or can do over the winter on a topic like this, as I can't be the only one confused by this..
@@philwilkinson2924 its just videoing your swing and seeing what your natural pattern is, there’s no magic answer unfortunately
My club face seems to be wide open at impact when i try this, even in slow motion practice swings. Any idea what i'm doing wrong? not a fan of bowing the wrist it hurts to do so personally.
Either your grip is not correct, you’re extending your lead wrist on the way down or you are not rotating your forearms correctly as you come into impact in order to square the face. By the sounds of it if you cannot bow your wrist then you need to make sure your anatomy and grip are corrected at address as you probably have a limitation in your wrist
I tried pushing left hip back and hit the ball, seems like it chunk/fat a bit. Is there anything i need to do w upper body?. Thanks!
You’ll be casting the club or you’ll be stuck on the trail leg
I strike the ball better when I remember to stick out my butt/ hips. Great video and explanation.
Great stuff!
I think we're on the cusp of major correction - and thus improvement - in golf instruction, like the one that occurred when the traditional model of ball flight laws was proven incorrect In the 90s. Today the issue is hip movement - turns out that trying to rotate your hips as fast and as much as possible to initiate the downswing is not good advice.
Couldn’t agree more
Excellent! So when is the proper time to stand up in the golf swing? After the ball is long gone? Thanks.
You’ll start to heavily extend the lead side around shaft parallel in the downswing
@Gilesgillgolf Many Thanks.
This is a VERY difficult thing to do trying to keep hip depth during the swing. But it definitely separates the best golfers from the average ones. I just spent two hours with the chair and half speed shots and did more harm than good. My swing is a mess now and had a terrible practice session. I think I will try this sometime again in the future but I have never been able to master this move and will probably remain a 14 handicap.
The key is setting it up right in the backswing. Most players have to early extend from poor backswings
I ageee with u. My swing was a bit messed not until i fix my back swing up right. Everything else just slotted in smoothly! Amazing!!
@@rickrochel8170 exactly that. The golf swing is a chain reaction so you need to have things in place earlier on
This works great for me on the practice fairway but i seem to go back to my old habits on course 😢
Could be something simple like you’re posture or setup changes or you don’t complete your backswing turn out on the course
In the start of the downswing should the weight stay on the right heel and then push off to stop the early extension?
No it shouldn’t stay in the heel. I have a downswing footwork video you should watch
@@Gilesgillgolf thanks for the reply, much appreciated. I will check the videos out 👍
Very important to understand that early extension is actually a functional movement to help square the face. If people don’t understand how to square the face the body is GOING to compensate. You can’t not so although for advanced players the chair can be helpful (I’m scratch and use this) for a weekend hacker this is not going to work. You need to have a square face in order to maintain shaft lean and actually use that space. 😊
Exactly what I teach
I have to disagree with Trafyknits in his opinion of the golf swing. It is true that there are only a very few super elite players. But almost ANYBODY can vastly improve their golf swing. Even the tour pros will tell you that as much as 80 percent of the golf swing is strong fundamentals. Grip, stance, and alignment. MOST OF ALL, HAVING THE DESIRE TO IMPROVE. The majority of golfers grab a club haphazardly and go at it. With little or no regard in building an end result. That's fine if you don't care about playing well. The great Ben Hogan said in his book five lessons that almost anyone can shoot golf in the Seventies. Not scratch necessarily. But consistently break 80. Watch an expert like this marvelous young instructor like Giles Gill. Follow it and apply it. Abd your game will improve. And approve. I know one thing. You're on the right channel if you want to get better.
Thank you Donald!
You seem to stay down at impact and past, are you not suppose to push back from the ground at a certain point?
You do push out the ground but moving your upper body into right bend is what keeps you “down”
Is this same with driver? Or just irons
It’s the same with driver yes
This was the best swing thought for proper rotation I've seen. Like its crazy how focusing on my butt cheeks makes the rest of my body just fall into the slot without thinking.
Terrific light bulb tip
Amazing! Glad it has helped!
Seriously, watched this and hour before playing 18 yesterday.
Tried the swing thought of the butt cheek vs back plane just for fun.
Proceeded to flush every ball with every club dead straight downrange.

@@theCycleReport amazing! So close to breaking 80!!
Is maintaining knee flex throughout the swing another way of accomplishing this? You certainly can't keep the hips back if you straighten out your knees, especially the right one at the top of the swing.
No the knees need to change flex. It’s a blend of losing flex & reflexing. See one of my latest video where it says it’s all in the ones.
i am fighting a v bad case of early extension + very steep downswing+ hands roving far out in front at impact, wonder if/suspect this may be the magic potion for me
Something will be causing those things. Your root cause issue will be in the backswing
@@Gilesgillgolf thanks Giles, you're right, i take it away shallow and inside....now fighting the shanks , work in progress
Very good bud you only need to explain the positive moves please in slowmotion also thank you
Thanks
An interesting concept but I'm left confused by the video. I get that you have to accentuate to get the point across but what you do in your swing appears very different to what you talk about previously. The movement you discuss is not one I'd attempt because (as you can see in the video) it brings your head closer to the ball which is going to result in the club contacting the ground before the ball. When you hit the ball you don't appear to move your hip relative to your initial stance, essentially maintaining your initial position through the swing. So I'm not sure what approach I should be taking here?
You have to realise feel verses real are two different things. I might feel like i push my hips back a yard but they might only move an inch.
Pretty much all tour pros drop down and lose height in the downswing. Once they do this then they explode up just prior and through impact. Now if you want to swing it slow and rely on your arms then don’t do this move but you’ll struggle to move
As someone who plays off scratch, I can also say that if you’re not focussing entirely on hip depth you’re not ever going to achieve any consistency with your ball striking. It is imperative to striking the ball well.
Your club contact is altered by ball position (hitting up on the driver with ball off the left heel) and down (for irons and wedges) by moving the ball back in the stance. Hip depth should remain constant in any shot.
Does your weight move back into your heels with this squat move Giles?
No. I am pretty exceptional at doing this move. Weight in feet stay pretty athletic 70/30 weight distribution toes to heels. Only time it gets to the heel is at the finish of follow thru. But who am I ? Only a 9 handicap 🤷♂️ good luck
Pretty much what he said 😂
Because when you maintain hip depth you maintain a consistent spine angle through the swing.
If you have good side bend control
I hit it off the toe when I do this. I think I need hip depth but my hands need to drop to force my head from not pulling back.
Could be a setup error or something else out of position
