A watch that made all the headlines for the right reasons. We're looking at this watch as a "TAG Heuer" and not just "Heuer", and their whole approach of giving us a Modern watch with tonnes of Classic nuances. Easily one of my favourite releases of the year and one of the nicest looking Reverse Panda Dial Chronographs we've had in a long time. What do you think? 🥃

The reason this watch is so good is that it represents both sides of the brand - a modern, in-house chronograph movement combined with the proportions and legibility of a 60s Jack Heuer-era Carrera. Previous heritage models never managed this - I owned a 2017 Autavia and, whilst it looked good from a distance, it had the finesse and dimensions of a brick. This is definitely a step in the right direction

I may get some flack for this but I've made up my mind, I am going to pick this up over the SpeedMaster Professional. I've always looked at the speedy as this great value proposition and thought it and the Zenith Chronomaster to be the definitive chronographs in said price range. However, there was always something about the speedy that didn't fully mesh with me and I have thin wrists so 39mm is much more preferable than 42mm. This just has that perfect charm and quirkiness to it and It just gives me that feeling, that so called "it" factor. Sometimes we have to choose what the heart wants rather than the mind and that is the feeling this beautiful piece is giving me.

I feel you here. As much as the Speedy Pro is fantastic, there is one drawback that bugs me... manual wind. I'm finding more and more that having to wind a watch daily has me constantly on edge. SO! Ideal chrono for me is one that's slim, great size, well built, contrasty and automatic 😉 Get what you mean entirely 🥃

Just had a chance to see one in the metal. Both blue with date window at six and black with date at twelve. Partial to the black with a sober and well conceived placement of elements on dial especially the attention to the scale right at the border of the crystal using every millimeter of space at dial edge. Still digesting the date placement but it works and love that it is present serving duty. After feeling sticker shock post W&W 2023, subjectively I think there is value here for an integrated chronograph with great feeling in hand…a great first impression.

Great video, I have two weeks with my CBS2210 black dial and I love it. I do have more expensive watches but like you mentioned I admired Tag Heuer early on way back in the 80s. The caliber TH20 also got some upgrades over the H02. I would like to add that the caliber TH20 like the prior H02 movement can be worn with the chronograph hand running in sync with the small seconds in this way the date would be totally visible with zero wear and tear due to the design of the vertical clutch and low parts count of around 170 components which is low for a chronograph.

Great video. I think the Glassbox was one of my favorite watches from Watches & Wonders 2023. I would go with the reverse panda also. That quirky date at the 12 does add quite a bit of charm and character to the watch, besides the many other design details and overall aesthetics.
Indeed, my first luxury watch brand I personally through down my money on was a TAG Heuer. I still remember it the day in 1995 when I walked into a watch shop in Hong Kong and picked it out, based on design and what cash I had on me to afford.
It was a 36-37mm (I'm still not clear what the exact size was to this day, I get mixed numbers when researching) white dial black bezel quartz dive watch.
It may have looked like a typical dive watch based on Rolex Submariner design. But, I didn't know it at the time, it had a particular twist being the round and baton markers were reversed on the dial. Round at the 9 & 6. Batons at all others, minus the date window at 3 and of course a triangle at the 12. I would say natural for me to gravitate to a non-standard classic design format.
Anyways, that was my main watch for about 12 years. I had gone without a TAG Heuer for quite some time since late 2007. Most recently, I decided to get another TAG Heuer because it meant something special to me.
I purchased a new Aquaracer Solargraph in Titanium. It sort of goes back to my first TAG Heuer purchase, a quartz dive watch, but this time with modern improvements being solar powered and in titanium. And, the design this time is completely original. It's a damn pricey watch. But, I love it and it's a luxury product from a well-known and world renowned brand with long history.

Great piece ID Guy 👌 You are so right to highlight this watch, and more importantly, it’s history. The Carrera is a hugely historical piece and deserves more love than it gets I suppose. That said, my hard earned money probably wouldn’t go the way of this watch. For me, it doesn’t hold a candle to my Speedmaster. Money no object? I’d definitely have one though 👍

  • @ams914

I bought one online from Tag's website. Easy and fast shipping (as it should be). I had always loved vintage Heuer but they were obviously a fortune and this was the model that got me to buy my first TAG. The watch is gorgeous and not enough praise can be given to the actual "glassbox design" including the sloping dial. And I must be really lucky because the watch has been within a second or two of dead on for a week. I love it and I think I might be inclined to suggest someone choose it over a Speedmaster, if they were looking at chronographs in that price range. I think they're on par with one another from an overall build quality point of view.

I still have my 1st watch . I was new (1969) as was the watch. I could have bought the Tri-Compax at Zales with my entire 2 week pay check but Zales Jewelers in New Orleans wanted $95.00 for that one and all I got paid was $75.00 so I bought a Bi-Compax Baylor watch instead. It has a bi-directional friction bezel….a world timer. Baylor was the Zales brand name for Heuer chronographs. I was 15 and sure I would become a pilot one day. Made it to 40, had the mid-life thing and went on to become a SAR Pilot for a Texas squadron of CAP. Funny world. I am looking for my grail as I come into 70. This Heuer is looking goooooood! As always an amazing video! Online, the reverse panda is just beautiful and I was so excited to see it, but in the flesh it was a let down for me. The black on the dial isn’t as bold as it seems in pictures, the date doesn’t click into place when you change it so you need to position it carefully before securing the pusher and the numerals are so thin it’s quite hard to see. Also the pushers don’t have a solid ‘click’ feel when activating the chrono, they feel a bit flimsy. Visually I felt the blue dial piece had more presence.

Excellent video as always. I have a soft spot for Heuer chronographs - the CS3111 1964 re-edition is a personal favourite, small minimalist with solid Lemania movement. However Tag Heuer often gets some of the details slightly off on their modern retro-inspired pieces, and this is another example. Having the Carrera name above the Tag logo looks odd to my eyes, and having the date at 12 o’clock is slightly annoying. It’s a watch that at first glance you think - ah, that’s a really handsome piece, but when you see these two elements, it feels like they were shoe-horned in with no rhyme or reason. There are too many TH pieces where design choices appear to have been made where a committee has sat down away from the creative folk and made decisions about what goes on the dial, and it shows.

Great thought-provoking points about a great watch design - I agree it may well be the stand-out offering from W&W - and I see where you’re coming on the TAG thing.
But…there’s no getting away from the long-standing association with certain types of people typically in certain occupations saying something like “I’ve got a new TAG” that has made the ‘TAG’ moniker achingly uncool. Over the four decades since Heuer lost its independence, TAG has come to mean Tasteless And Gaudy.
Let’s be honest, if the clock could be turned back no-one would impose the TAG branding on Heuer now.
But LVMH has decided to double down with the TAG Heuer branding, and they’ seemingly can’t put a foot wrong atm, so what do I know!
    It’s still a great design.

TAG Heuer is now the horological home of the legendary Carol Forstier-Kasapi who serves as the Director of Movements after being involved in the development of the UN Freak and then 10 years +/- as the Director of Movements at Cartier. Heuer was during its heyday in the 1960s the horological home of the recently deceased Gerd Rudiger-Lang who went on to found the trailblazing Chronoswiss brand. If TH is permitted to become a movement/accuracy centric brand, people will come back. The inhouse Caliber 02 which was TH’s mea culpa for damage done by the intentional mislabeling of a Seiko derived movement as in-house was in some references such as the Carrera Twin Time skeltonized GMT chronograph bastardized by Hublot light designs initiated under the leadership of Jean-Claude Biver which was hurtful. The Carrera Glassbox is the kind of reference I have been waiting for from TH to serve as a modern complement to my 1973 Heuer chronograph. The Glassbox is a much better vehicle for the roll out of the Caliber 02 than some of the prior TH references that offered the Caliber 02. As Grand Seiko has proven convincingly, great movements and dials are what ultimately serve as the foundation for a hot brand.

I don't think one should call the 2010s Autavia and Monza chronos "reissues". They're rather reinterpretations. And the "glassbox" moniker has now been used for years for the Heuer-only 39mm H02 Carreras.
