Right I was actually gonna say I think there’s a lot of room in a edit to convey the feeling you want as well. The first way works a little better if that’s what you’re trying to convey.
What I started noticing is how much movie makers love tyre screaching. I've recently rewatched Breaking Bad and I'm not exagerating when I say I don't think there is a single car scene without it. They screach when driving off or taking a turn, no matter the speed or even if it fits the scene. They even screach on dirt. It doesn't bother me, but once you notice it you really can't unnotice it.
Breaking Bad is a fine example of good foley. Fairly often foley will be turned down or not all of it will be used. The foley team(performer and mixer/recordist at the very least) has stated that they used almost everything they made for the series. Foley is lots of fun to create, edit and mix.
If I remember correctly, the sound of the webs attaching to things in the original Spider-Man trilogy, was actually someone who had made a whip from the tapes inside VHS'es, and was striking different objects with it.
Hey brother Paul, I thought this was an amazing video. You are incredibly talented, not only as a filmmaker (which your short film final version showed proof of) but as a storyteller and educator. Seriously, most people would be happy to be good at any one of these three talents, and you have them nailed down amazingly. I thought I was good with foley and sound design in my short films, but wow, yours is on another level. Brilliant to randomly come across this kind of filmmaking video because of the algorithm, I'm about to binge watch the rest of your videos because this was incredible.
One of my goals once winter is over is to make a short film, like 3-4 minutes long, this year. Hopefully I can pull something off. This stuff helps, thanks!
Baby Driver made me realised the power of sound effects/sound design as I love watching movies with headphones 🎧 and trust me, you can feel what the main character is hearing or feeling. Thanks for this enlightenment 🤠
Imagine recording the sound of someone writing but trying to recreate every stroke like a swing, trying to match the speed, intensity, of the ink or led, pressing down on paper, or whatever surface, hearing the scratching, like nails on a chalkboard, or scraping, of a key, slashing a metal door, or hearing the tire, rip & tear, while the air, is streaming out it's last few... drops, of pure, full, last breaths, of hissing, giving out, at a constant frequency, never ending, until..... it's... all... gone. Hissssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss
This guy is THE BEST. His videos are extremely well-edited, concise, and all-around fun to watch! After watching, I searched for similar channels, but this is ONE OF A KIND. I'm impressed by the talent he possesses, and I can't wait for the next upload.
I'm doing a film assignment on video essays and while researching I came across this video. I love the way this was structured and the topics you touched on. Funny enough, I am also doing it on sound design. This is great inspiration for me, keep up the good work!
I didn’t notice a change with the music until you added the voice dialogue at the very end. Then it totally changed. That was the only reason I realized the two of them were together in the same scene. Also it actually seemed like the guy had fear in his eyes looking up when I did not get that watching it the first time.
I was working out while watching this and had to stop when the diseased keyboard came up. That long pause, hesitation of the hand and timing with your narration leading up to the Wilhelm scream cracked me up so hard!!! Beautiful.
"An Additional One!!" had me dead. Excellent video, btw. This is very good, and it was nice to see some workflow and I got to learn plenty as someone who's looking to get into sound design and editing. Thanks so much and keep at it!!
My edditing was recently getting worse and i felt lile giving up. Im glad youtube recommend this to me. I always just left the sound in my recordings so hopefully this'll change my production quality a fair bit Thanks man, keep up the good work and +1 subscribers
This is amazing!! I can vouch for the importance of Foley in a film having worked at a Foley studio for a while. It's such a unique part of the filmmaking process and nine times out of ten elevates the film to a much higher degree, though sadly is never treated as important as music or dialogue.
how incredible....sounds...to visuals....this is something i always miss...until recently...and wow what a difference it all makes....so worth it...to ADD sounds... nice lesson...thx y...
Love watching your videos. Watching how you incorporate the concepts being explained is remarkable. Your skits, though short as can be, have their own flavour and it is noticeable the effort put into them. Especially loved the Foley bit (not to say the video as a whole).
Shot very well and the foley just took it to the next level. I hope to make some videos like this one day. I'm even learning the way use music. Nice work Paul E.T..
Ohhhhhhh! Now it clicks! Let me elaborate. The Sound video was actually the very first one I stumbled upon three weeks ago. After enjoying it I moved on. Fast forward to today, I come across another video from you (unaware it was you) - 'How Filmmakers Make Cameras Disappear | Mirrors in Movies: Part 2', and I was genuinely impressed, prompting me to subscribe. As I clicked on your profile to explore more videos, I rediscovered the Sound video that I had watched and even commented on before. I must say, I love your content! The titles and thumbnails are really eye-catching. The power of SEO is evident!
@paul_et Hi Paul, personally, I liked the first shot before the additional sound effects, perhaps only one sound (like a gun charge) to bring you back and make you look up, but even just the line of dialogue was enough. Sometimes, less is more. Even if it's not realistic when you sit in the forest by your own and hear no sound. But I think it happens in moments when you are really deep in your thoughts. From my own experience, I've been in the forest where I could not hear anything, and it created such an eerie feeling. For example, the movie "A Quiet Place" used perfectly less sound since it was the plot but also is what created tension, especially in the shots of the daughter who was deaf.
so this what they call yt premium and for the 1st I'm gonna say to dear algorithm, Thank you I'm really loving the new content popping into my home page
Dude… what the absolute flippity flap, you’re channel is incredible. After watching a second video I am convinced this is something special. Subscribed.
I love this video. I would love to show it to my year 7s to help them understand how sound works in films but the f-bomb makes it impossible. I'll save it for the year 12s!
You may not see this comment, but this video is awesome. Great editing, top notch sound mixing. I've always been fascinated by sound effects in movies and music in general. I like what Corridor Crew does with visual effect analysis, but nobody does the sound effects. This video of yours, although compressed by TH-cam has high fidelity and surround effect as well. Thank you.
Watching this two weeks out from upload. The "Me likey" bit held up. Damien Chazelle gotcha. lol. Great video, my guy. Love this stuff. Very inspiring.
Good audio > good video. I shoot doco style stuff and never thought I'd want a stock music service with SFX. I think my last job had 50-60 SFX clips in a 3 minute video. Waves, boats, helicopters, small boats, big ships, feet walking in sand, chainsaws.. And the sad part is that if I've done it well, no one will even notice. Also, looking forward to Foley Man
Yo I just came across your channel and I gotta say man your videos are Really well edited and they look super clean and fell like great videos I really love them! ❤️🔥also as a film lover and cinema lover I love seeing other people talk about film and learn more about things! Stay blessed bro! 💜🔥
i'm not gonna lie, your woods clip how you showed it originally with all the silence was very anxiety inducing. Good job
I agree. Sometimes the absence of sound is equally as important
ya the original was kinda horror type scary , some shit about to go wrong
Yeh it made me nervous
Right I was actually gonna say I think there’s a lot of room in a edit to convey the feeling you want as well. The first way works a little better if that’s what you’re trying to convey.
I agree the first shot was really insane
What I started noticing is how much movie makers love tyre screaching. I've recently rewatched Breaking Bad and I'm not exagerating when I say I don't think there is a single car scene without it. They screach when driving off or taking a turn, no matter the speed or even if it fits the scene. They even screach on dirt.
It doesn't bother me, but once you notice it you really can't unnotice it.
To be fair, they are also always hauling ass when driving away or parking.
Hahahahahahaha screeching on dirt
Ever watched the NBA? The sound guys reeaaally love their screeches
Breaking Bad is a fine example of good foley. Fairly often foley will be turned down or not all of it will be used. The foley team(performer and mixer/recordist at the very least) has stated that they used almost everything they made for the series. Foley is lots of fun to create, edit and mix.
U just cursed me
I actually really like straight up silence in movies in some moments,it gives the scence weight
lmao i swear i didnt copy you exact same thought mate xd it made the scene so much more dramatic right
Exactly. Like in Interstellar, when Dr. Mann explodes the ship, it’s dead silence which adds to the weight of the scene
Bro summarized one of my future lectures in an 10 min vid.
Thanks Paul!
*sweating profusely
You’re welcome?
7:20 - That app for SFX is Soundly, for anyone wondering.
If I remember correctly, the sound of the webs attaching to things in the original Spider-Man trilogy, was actually someone who had made a whip from the tapes inside VHS'es, and was striking different objects with it.

Thank you! That means a bunch
watching this whole video on mute
Without subtitels
good one ahaha
You monster...
I don’t think this comment can be topped😂
😅😅😅
Your videos are so well done. I’ve recently become fascinated with video production and this is gold. Inspiring stuff
One of my goals once winter is over is to make a short film, like 3-4 minutes long, this year. Hopefully I can pull something off. This stuff helps, thanks!
Do it!!
sound is underrated

Love the way you explain cool stuff like this in filmmaking please keep making more! :)
I'm doing a film assignment on video essays and while researching I came across this video. I love the way this was structured and the topics you touched on. Funny enough, I am also doing it on sound design. This is great inspiration for me, keep up the good work!
ADR is something that is sorely missing from so many smaller projects, especially on TH-cam.

HEY THIS IS GREAT!! I AM A MUSICIAN, SOUND DESIGNER AND CAN UNDERSTAND HOW IMPORTANT SOUND EFFECTS, MUSIC ARE! SO THANKS FOR SHARING!!
So good to see a video dedicated to the art of sound! ❤️ Absolutely loved it.
why does Jack Foley sound like someone that was involved with the JFK assassination!?
There are so many well made high quality videos on youtube about everything. Especially filmmaking, I AM SO HAPPY.
I was working out while watching this and had to stop when the diseased keyboard came up. That long pause, hesitation of the hand and timing with your narration leading up to the Wilhelm scream cracked me up so hard!!! Beautiful.
the story telling, the jokes, the editing, the message. everything about this is amazing
"An Additional One!!" had me dead. Excellent video, btw. This is very good, and it was nice to see some workflow and I got to learn plenty as someone who's looking to get into sound design and editing. Thanks so much and keep at it!!
This is incredible. I already knew most of it, but for a beginner your explanations are so thorough. Also the editing was top-notch.
Superb mate. Your sense of humor is brilliant. Love the way you demonstrate. Keep inspiring.
My edditing was recently getting worse and i felt lile giving up. Im glad youtube recommend this to me. I always just left the sound in my recordings so hopefully this'll change my production quality a fair bit

I was eager to know the story about the ice. You nailed it haha
how incredible....sounds...to visuals....this is something i always miss...until recently...and wow what a difference it all makes....so worth it...to ADD sounds...
nice lesson...thx y...
forgot the safety disclaimer for the pine cone. ouch 😁
just happened across your channel - digging the personality 👌
Love watching your videos. Watching how you incorporate the concepts being explained is remarkable. Your skits, though short as can be, have their own flavour and it is noticeable the effort put into them. Especially loved the Foley bit (not to say the video as a whole).
Amazing as always. It's like Christmas has come early. I'm really enjoying your work and hope you continue to make videos here on YT. 👌🏻
This was such a informative video for all the amateur filmmakers that make the mistake of not giving importance to the sound effects.
YOU ARE UNDERRATED MY MAN!!!
Shot very well and the foley just took it to the next level. I hope to make some videos like this one day. I'm even learning the way use music. Nice work Paul E.T..
Alle deine Videos sind geil!!
That is one satisfying narrating voice 👌
Probably my favourite Movie sound wise is "Killing them Softly", it has such realism and clarity.
I’m making a book movie trailer thing for school, and this helped me so much! going to watch all of your videos now
I've been enjoying your videos ever since you published Jam on toast Netflix doco. Keep it up!

I first saw your video on ads in movies. I regrettably didn't subscribe. I finally found you again and am not leaving.

Love that pine cone reveal at the end. 😂Brilliant.
The way you edit RULES! At so many points your timing makes me think YES!
The guys voice in the fridge 🤣
I love this video. I would love to show it to my year 7s to help them understand how sound works in films but the f-bomb makes it impossible. I'll save it for the year 12s!
Filmmakers who teach other filmmakers are legends.

This video of yours, although compressed by TH-cam has high fidelity and surround effect as well. Thank you.
I think you should add forest ambient sound.
It’s a good day when Paul ET uploads a new video!
That was some kind of Handcannon Blaster he was holding
Watching this two weeks out from upload. The "Me likey" bit held up. Damien Chazelle gotcha. lol. Great video, my guy. Love this stuff. Very inspiring.
This intro could've come straight out of one of Mario Wienerroither's „Musicless Musicvideos" 😂
Beautiful way of educating.
This video is better than 2 years of Film Degree!
I Like your editing looks clean and you got that Eye of an Editor well done ! You got yourself a new Subscriber :D
2:46 kinda feels like a hiphop video. It actually does
The background score reminded me of tenet, great work
Good audio > good video.

Like the Kuleshov effect, but for sound.
Man you’re the best, thank you for all the tips.
Wow mate, what an edit! Watched every minute.
1:12 You can see the emotions and expressions from his hands as he tries to figure out wtf just happened to his computer
THIS EATSSSSS
Using unreal engine, Adobe premier, after effects, FL studio, and Paul’s pro tips , I’ll have a something worth watching soon
Yo I just came across your channel and I gotta say man your videos are Really well edited and they look super clean and fell like great videos I really love them! ❤️🔥also as a film lover and cinema lover I love seeing other people talk about film and learn more about things! Stay blessed bro! 💜🔥

2:40 “An additional one” 😂😂😂
The pine cone payoff was the ICEing on the cake.
your story telling is masterpiece..
0:28 ahhh it's the art of Foley, Foley and Sound Effects editing are totally different things. XD
Enjoyed watching that.. Great video!
Hands down the best TH-cam channel on TH-cam ♥
3:41 is how the mic boi does every movie I've watched 💀
I actually liked the scene with you sitting and no sound better it made the situation more tense with the silence imo
Needed this video thanks a lot make part 2
the window wiping sounds (in the music rhythm) were off tho
Tiktok's founder : inspiration loaded sucessfully!
I didn't even get the plot without the music, kinda wild
