The snow and ice covered Calif. Zephyr in snowy Ft. Morgan on 20APR2024

- In an abbreviated video today, the California Zephyr #5 made its station stop in Fort Morgan at 0542 MDT (On Schedule, in fact early by a tad). P42s #207 & #126 brought the 8-car consist to a stop with car 8 to the station ramp. There was no passenger activity. Kely did deliver a coffee to yours truly and then addressed a person on the platform who was told about the reservation system AMTRAK uses. He didn't board the train. After reaching the scheduled departure time, Kelly gave the high ball and on a clear signal, the Zephyr departed for Union Station in Denver.
As a footnote, my camera was rebelling against me and the weather (snow again). The scanner joined in the rebellion and stayed in the cab of the pickup. Neither shared the coffee that Kelly brought to me. LOL!

Good evening Mike. Glad you are getting moisture in FM. Much of the northern plains and upper Midwest pretty dry. No flooding anywhere in Red River basin from Lake Traverse to the Canadian border. Need more rain. Thanks for another fine video.

Man that's snow looks like it's really coming down out there. I can hear it loud and clear. And the ice and everything stay safe out there. We're supposed to get 30 something overnight here tonight. Been busy all day so this is the first time I'm seeing your video. But yeah all that stuff. And I think we're supposed to have 62 on Monday and 60 on Tuesday but it's going to drop back down. Those weird springtime weather patterns that we have.

Hey Hey Mr. Mike - A snowy morning in FMG for the arrival of the #5. Nice stop too - I'm thinking dynamic braking. Definitely a coffee day ☕. It's currently raining here and there's flood warnings in many nearby areas. It's supposed to rain throughout the night on into morning 🌦️ We're currently a rainy 64 F @ 2017 Hrs CDT. Good evening, Papa Geoff; Thanks for stopping by as well as the comments. Tomorrow it will breech the 60s for a high. This snowfall has no chance of staying for another ski season here. LOL! There was a lot of dynamic braking and the steam I saw from a couple of the integrated discs was interesting.
We are all done with the weather event here. It will chill down overnight as the cloud cover departs. But I am looking ahead to the 60s followed by 70s on Monday and 80s by next weekend. Hope the water doesn't get too deep down there. Got a lot more springtime weather to get thru.

I have no idea where that gent came from. Kelly tried to tell him to call the reservation center and purchase a seat thru them. That went over well. There isa "bus" service that would have moved him closer to the metro area where he was headed. Oh well.
The nice thing about the spring snowstorms is not having to dig out the sidewalks. The ground is warm enough that the snow melted away. No mowing here for at least a week. May not mow again now that all lawn care equipment must be powered by something other than internal combustion engines. That's thanks to a former Californian who lives in Boulder County. Doesn't take legal effect until next January but she is after the so-called governor to make it happen RIGHT NOW! 🤬🤬🤬🤬
She also wants the farmers to stop using diesel and gas powered tractors et al. Go figure.

How long does the engineers and conductors stay on a train going from Chicago to Emeryville and second question is do they work on the number six coming back east from Emeryville to Chicago just remember you’re a TH-cam legend
Good morning, Geoffrey; Thank you for stopping by and the questions. The operating crews are governed by federal laws that limit their time in service just as over-the-road truckers are. The crew that brings the Zephyr west from Chicago turns over at Ottumwa, Iowa. That crew turns over at Lincoln, Nebraska. The 3rd crew (the team I see here) is relieved in Denver by the crew that takes it to Grand Junction, Colo where another crew relays the Zephyr to Salt Lake City and so on to Emeryville. The same holds true for the #6 trains returning to Chicago.
The train staff (car attendants, lounge attendant, dining car crew) are with the train from Chicago to Emeryville and back to Chicago. Then they get several days away before doing it all over again.
The operating crew may return later that day or early the next day to the starting point. Example: Ric Works #6 east to Lincoln on Thursday nights, He returns to Denver on Saturday morning with #5, sleeps really fast and then takes #6 back to Lincoln. His next run is back to Denver on Monday morning with the #5 train. Then he gets some days off.
I hope that helps clear that up. There is more to it than that but let's save that part for another time.

Good morning Mike from sunny 56 mid Tenn. Always wondered if rain or ice on rails effected train operation. Also noise from superliner car nearby your location. Surely not loco' s so must be a heating/ AC unit. You are the train guru so i bet you know. Beautiful colorado morning anyway.

I think the Zephyr owned the BNSF Brush sub this morning. Had not heard any other rail traffic. I think your idea for the noise from the coach was correct. The septic system vacuum pumps have a different sound. I don't claim the train guru title. LOL! Just know enough to get into trouble with a real guru. LOL!

As wet and heavy as that snow was, I am surprised it didn't sound like surf slapping the beach somewhere. LOL! Or at least the shoreline of the nearest irrigation reservoir. Won't be like that in the morning. The thermometer will drop overnight from the 38F. that we are at now to around 20F. before skyrocketing for near 60 under clear and sunny skies. 70s on Monday.

Now folks understand why the trike isn't in use yet. I've said that I was a "fair weather triker". LOL! Anyway, this weather event may stick around and turn the snow into rain to help melt some of it in. The Dandelions and other weeds are really lapping it up. Same with the crabgrass.
That was neat of Kelly to deliver a coffee. Not only did it taste good, but my fingers liked the warmth.

Good morning, Carolyn; I thank you for tuning in along with the comments. The snow appears to have stopped for now. It is pretty to see on the grass and not piled up in the streets and sidewalks. If this weather event stays around, we will have some rain to help melt the snow. The robins were really scolding the snow and still chirping merrily anyway.
Those videos I shot with an assist from Engineer Ric. I was his guest on that run to Denver, spent the day with him and then rode back to Ft. Morgan with him in the cab, Tommy and Andrew working the cars. That was a fun day, and I learned a lot as well. Go the chance to see what goes on the public doesn't see. Wow!
That coffee not only tasted great, it warmed up my fingers as well. What a treat.

@@MikeJensen-jt9yr You know, when the train came flying in I thought to myself that has to be Ric then when the clear signal was given & no awrightttt, perhaps they were in a hurry.We had a college student that subbed & when he drove my route his favorite thing to do was hit the curbs everytime & you know thats not good for the tires.The students were more than eager to tattle.I guess the curbs were better than the sidewalk.!!!👋😉

Doesn't winter ever quit out there? I noticed in my latest NARP Newsletter that the Zephyr has moved up over the last quarter from 29% on time FRA score to 54%.
