Unboxing so easily becomes a gambling addiction, I've seen it happen to others and I admit I've been tempted by the allure of unboxing an unusual myself. Good on you for breaking yourself out of that mindset and encouraging others to do so as well, it's a real problem that needs to be addressed.
Why has no one ever made the analogy that cases in video games are exactly identical to poker machines in real life. They’re for entertainment only, not for winning constantly.
Matpat made a theroy about it, check hos channel out it'a called The Game Theorist, he did it a while back so i suggest scrolling down to find the words video game gambling, hope this helped ya
Holy crap... It was so deep and... I don't know but it felt that Cosmic would start crying at the end when he did admit his own mistakes. Just... wow...
It's a klefki isn't it? *A key without locks *They had had a lot of space for new Pokemon but no room for good ideas. *It's signature move is fairy lock which blocks the opponent from leaving
Nice. I just got one as well. Today. After getting a Pro Original Kit in MvM, and having enough parts to put it together. I got fountain of Delight though.
I've never unboxed an Unusual, but I know someone with only 60 hours on tf2 who unboxed a circling tf2 logo multi class hat. That moment made me question life.
I was playing with someone the other day, and he got a hat drop. I asked him how many hours he has, he said only 87. I've never got any hat drops, even with my 500 hours on record.
I started playing mvm instead of unboxing because it still feeds my gambling addiction but is actually fun and I don't feel like I wasted my money if I get nothing
I only get keys when I have extra money on steam that I can't use on something else. It's a good practice and keeps both your expectations and desire to unbox low. At least for me it does.
I will stand by you and support you wherever I can dude. Ever since I found you're channel two years ago I have never stopped supporting you. Chin up Ya pal Dova
At one point I was obsessed with unboxing the Confidential Collection case, because the only item I didn't have from it was the Batsaber. These cases are really addicting.
You hear that? it’s the sound of a broken man, one who made bad choices, but is making amends with himself, god it’s so heartbreaking to see another fall apart.
I can relate to this as I got a crappy nuts and bolts unusual as my first, nothing for 2000+ cases and crates afterwards and currently I can seemingly unbox lower tier unusuals or unusualifiers consistantly, yet to actually get a high or godtier and it's certainly a huge waste of money. People also tend to think of my reactions to unboxing unusualifiers as either funny due to how many I seemingly can and have unboxed or just call me ungreatful because I'm not happy for unboxing an unusualifer as they would be happy themself for getting their first unusual, yet not understanding that I have the feeling that I can get another go at a godtier by unboxing 50-100 cases or crates and yet again not get anything high or godtier. At that stage it's just an unusualifier means I yet again wasted a lot of money without getting anything good. However my mentality for posting unboxing videos is that I do it so others do not have to unbox as it also obviously shows that even tho I consistently unbox unusuals I still do not get anything good ever.
I just only unbox when I really want a normal hat... like the stardust crusader, and if I spend too much money I stop and just save up for the item itself...
Dammn, i guess that me reminiscing on your past on the stream actually brought the idea of making this video. Thank you for reaching out to the people like me about unboxing. And thank you for just doing what you like and enjoying it
This was an excellently crafted video about the mentality behind unboxing and how that drive can kill your wallet. Unboxing just hurts not only yourself but the economy ever since the all class crates what you end up with in the end doesn’t amount to much and it’s sad how community members get screwed over nowadays
I know that unboxing is a bad thing by statistics and experience. But. I've dreamed of wanting to unbox an unusual. Even if it's worthless. Getting to every milestone in TF2. I've traded to unusuals before, I've had my loadout's stocked with my favorite items. I've branched away, sold items, came back, got them back. But the only thing left to say that I've made it in TF2, is to finally see that countdown reach its end, hear that creaking noise of the box opening up. That half a second where it's a gray screen, and hearing the clapping noises and whistling when you see the tag of purple over the tag, the description reading some sort of effect that puts that item at a higher tier. Regardless what item, what effect. I won't be satisfied until that day has come where I have experienced that moment.
Thanks for sharing Cosmic. It is hard for me to see your channel struggling because you are a great person to watch. I love your personality just wish more people could subscribe to you :(. Good luck man
Ay, I got an unboxing addiction (admittedly of a much smaller scale) after getting several valuable stranges and then a miami nights salty dog. After that my luck ran dry and I must'a wasted some $100 afterward, completely voiding any profit I made from that initial lucky streak and struggled for a good 2 months to break my addiction. It really is just gambling with a new coat of paint.
I used to unbox quite a bit. But luckily i had a goal, which was to just unbox 1 unusual. And i eventually did. I guess i got kind of jealous of people around me, unboxing good stuff. But looking back at it, those people have wasted way too much.
This… was powerful. I wish I came across it earlier, because I almost fell into the same unboxing addiction this halloween. I saw so many people unboxing god tier hats, I just had to try, I had to… and it never came. I began to think how it would be for nothing if I were to just stop, even though I felt guilty about spending so much. After 85 cases, and 230$, i finally looked at myself, and realized it would be best to stop. I realized it had got out of hand before that, but I couldn't quit. I had to get a patriot's peak, I had to make profit… but now I can see, that probably wouldn't happen, and I'd just have sunk deeper and deeper. If you want an unusual, just save up and buy one. Because if you unbox one, you may not even get a good effect or hat.
It might sound hypocritical, but even this season I saved up a little and unboxed. Not a lot, but enough. Support the game's development a little and still WISH there was a healthier way to do it that's not predatory on the consumer. I suggest next time you set a limit and stick to it. If you manage to trade things in and unbox a little bit extra and that's what you WANT, so long as it's not coming out of your pocket extra, then good! If you'd rather sell and cut your losses, also good. But set a limit. All it takes.
Gambling is addictive, no doubt about that. It feels as if it should be at least discouraged, legally speaking, if not outlawed. Maybe some day world, maybe some day...
honestly what people should do is buy some keys and get into the trading business. why waste $60 trying to unbox an unusual when you could just instead use that money to buy keys and get one that you genuinely want.
I usually just unbox one of every crate once, whenever they show up with an update, and I keep the item forever. Good thing the game isn't getting updated as much now! ;_;
As someone who got lucky and unboxed a decent Unusual a few weeks ago, I can say do NOT unbox. I previously spent God knows how much on cases since 2015 with nothing, and it is not a healthy thing. Imagine what I could've bought with all that money. If you REALLY want an Unusual, trade for one. Buying keys still supports Valve (Tho I don't think they deserve anything with how they treat this game) and you can get what you want, not have a one in a million chance of getting lucky. Great video, Cosmic. I hope it reaches people who have or are thinking about spending money on cases in hopes of a glowing hat.
One year ago, I unboxed my very first Unusual. Around 30 crates for a 15 key Purple Confetti Eliminator's Safeguard. I was very happy, even though I lost around 15 keys. Never unboxed again, scared of falling into that exactly curse you talk about on this video. So I sold the hat for a Unusual demoman taunt (horrible idea, lost 5 keys in the process) and then sold that taunt for 10 keys pure to get me a nice hat to start actually trading. Now Im stuck with low tier effects, but hey (I think to myself) at least I didnt spend 100 keys with unboxing just to get a nuts n bolts dread knot at best. So yeah Im happy with my blizzardy storm Ol Snaggletooth.
I was really hoping this wouldn't be a completely anti-crate video, since everyone is harping on loot boxes and whatnot lately, which is frustrating to me because they're threatening to take away something I really enjoy. I unbox because of the surprise aspect and to generate new items. Unusuals are a goal, yes, but it's mainly a bonus, since it's very unlikely to happen ( I could open up a million crates and not get a single unusual ). But of course people need to be careful when it comes to buying such things. If you are considering unboxing, ask yourself this : "Is this within my budget and would I be happy if I got the worst/cheapest thing I could get from this crate/case?" If yes, consider unboxing. If no, don't. If you really want an unusual, it's better to trade/buy directly than to try to unbox one. It's cheaper overall and you can pick which unusual you get. I am planning on making unboxing content in the future, but I am considering adding a warning in front of it to let people know that just because someone unboxes an unusual, doesn't mean they will too ( with the suggestion of buying an unusual instead, if they really want one ).
I used to be a guy who unboxed. Now, I don't see any need for an unusual. I'd much rather buy some specialized killstreak stranges which are MUCH cheaper than unusuals, and in mose cases (get it) less than a key. I like to feel rewarded for playing, and killstreak stranges do that for much cheaper. Now the last few stranges I want are close to unusual prices (Awp-er hand, kritzkrieg, gunslinger, widowmaker (not really) but I still believe they are more worth the price than an unusual.
I unbox because I have the money for it, and I've been very lucky thus far. Not a comment directed at anyone or making a point, just a statement of my position. But that doesn't effect the fact that this is a great video with a very real and very truthful point, not just for TF2 or even for games at all. We should all be taught to work for success, because relying on luck is no way to live your life.
I have unboxed 2 unusual taunts (both within the same 10 cases) and one unusual in my tf2 career. I am glad I didn't began to unbox more, but instead decided to sell those crappy unusuals, and trade them for keys and other unusuals. Slowly working my way up to something I want. The one unusual taunt I gave away to my best friend, the other I sold for 30 keys! just before the taunt crash, I slowly traded my way up to 80 keys, and now finally own my dream medic hat. And the unusual hat, well that trade up is still in progress, but it's getting there slowly! Please listen to cosmic afro, do it only a few. and focus on trading for profit, istead of wasting your money on cases. Even unboxing is a lot of fun, and trading can be boring. you'll be happier in the long run!
Well, the terrible truth is, someone has to unbox it first. Someone has the to do the gamble, first. I hope belgains gambling law will carry over to other countrys and Valve finally has to move away from this addictive system.
I do the 2 new crates i find after that i save one for my collection then the rest are sold or deleted XD i would rather buy 4 mvm tickets and play for rewards for a few hours then open 2 5 second cases.
so from what i understand. unboxing can get addicting and becomes like gambling (comment below is better if you wanna read this part xd) and just makes you want to keep going and going andn ever stop and when you do stop you just want to get back to it and thats unhealthy mentally, people also threat you with scam attempts and other stuff i cant remember BUT the point of this video (at least in my eyes) is: We can support the game without unboxing and without becoming addicted to it in an unhealthy way
Personally I think Valve should have a limit to counter the gambling. Such as, after opening X amount of crates, you should have a 100% chance to unbox any unusual from said crate. (Sure it would saturate the market, more on that below.) More than ANYTHING I solidly believe the unusual market should have NEVER exceeded it's current value. Valve is not to blame though, people were willing to pay that much for pixels, and now we have hats that sell for the same price as my college tuition. The trading community is the problem. One day, TF2 will be forgotten, and the hats that you spent thousands of dollars on will be worth pennies. Some advice for someone who has a mass of crates to unbox, don't unbox them all in one sitting. Put a limit on how many you unbox per day. I don't claim to know, or understand the unboxing rate. But it's really sad to see someone burn through 100+ crates, with little reward. I've done five crates per day once, and within a week I pulled a decent hat. Which means I didn't have to spend $250 for one sitting.
To be honest.... I should have deleted my Crates and boxes on TF2 a long time ago, I think I'm tired of depending on RNG to make the game more enjoyable. I am not going to get the Unusual Texas Ten Gallon I long desired when I first played TF2 and I now feel I can just play TF2 because I like the game and can worry about aesthetics later. If I ever get myself an unusual, strange, etc; I'm buying it from the market, someone has already done the opening and don't want it, might as well pick me up on somewhere in the future... or don't if I move on. (...Though having 4,403 hours into the game sure makes me feel that I should of had it long ago before I reached that number @_@; Tough life I guess xD )
1 of my subscribers said I should do a Colab ( pardon my spelling) with you saying that we have similar personalities. Honestly I would enjoy the exposure and could definitely use something to help really get my channel going. I do play TF2, though I also play a lot of other games, and would be pretty open to times when you can do it. You don't have to say yes and if you respond with a simple no then I will never bother you again. Thank you for your time and I hope this comment made your day a bit more interesting
I won't say it's a curse unless you have a gambling addiction. Yes, unboxing sprees are considered as gambling, just like the lottery. If you know you can control yourself, I don't see too much of an issue for unboxing. I do agree unboxing videos should not be uploaded, however. Maybe it's okay if you share the fact you unboxed a certain item, whether people believe it or not. Just don't really need to build the interest and inspiration to.
As I said, if you MUST, a few cases to support the development isn't a bad thing. I just wish there was a healthier way for consumer and the devs to allow us to support their game that wasn't based on outright gambling.
Unboxing supports valve and if they see people buying keys and stuff they might create more content for TF2....but at this point where they dont care anymore is not worth it to even support them anymore with our wallets (im talking about unbox ofcourse). Just stop.
Only old school Cosmic Afro fans know about the Burning Flames Hoodie.
Unboxing so easily becomes a gambling addiction, I've seen it happen to others and I admit I've been tempted by the allure of unboxing an unusual myself. Good on you for breaking yourself out of that mindset and encouraging others to do so as well, it's a real problem that needs to be addressed.

SF1NX CZ - yeah, I got my first hat drop around 350 hours, I have 3 now... at 990 hours.
Haha. When my drop limit resets tomorrow, I'm definitely getting a hat. I can feel it.
I started playing mvm instead of unboxing because it still feeds my gambling addiction but is actually fun and I don't feel like I wasted my money if I get nothing
ECKS DEE Yeah I mean, you still have the chance to at least get something good
Plus it costs less than a key
"How far you have to go down that road to see where it lead ??"
I only get keys when I have extra money on steam that I can't use on something else.
It's a good practice and keeps both your expectations and desire to unbox low. At least for me it does.
He unboxes the unusual at 0:11

This video ain't gonna stop me from Halloween unboxing and unboxing a few cases when a new set comes out
One shall say that Unboxing is like a one and only chance in life
But others say that once you start unboxing, there's no turning back
I just like to unbox 5 cases after an update or when ever they add crates
To hold off my addiction to buying 100 cases, I’ll buy 5 every weekend and keep em their until I feel like opening them
I can relate to this as I got a crappy nuts and bolts unusual as my first, nothing for 2000+ cases and crates afterwards and currently I can seemingly unbox lower tier unusuals or unusualifiers consistantly, yet to actually get a high or godtier and it's certainly a huge waste of money. that's why we wait for Halloween (if they double the unusual unbox rate again).
I only unbox on Halloween or in case of big updates like jungle inferno or so. Its like only smoking on social events lol
I’m hearing that they might be bringing back spells, hallelujah, but it’s just a rumor
I just only unbox when I really want a normal hat... like the stardust crusader, and if I spend too much money I stop and just save up for the item itself...

I don't usually unbox.
But when I do.
I get lucky.
Stay thirsty my friends
This was an excellently crafted video about the mentality behind unboxing and how that drive can kill your wallet. Unboxing just hurts not only yourself but the economy ever since the all class crates what you end up with in the end doesn’t amount to much and it’s sad how community members get screwed over nowadays
Oh hi, fellow Awful Hospital fan!

You won't get new hats unless you unbox the new hats to put a dent in your bank and a splitting pain in your head
Thanks for sharing Cosmic. It is hard for me to see your channel struggling because you are a great person to watch. I love your personality just wish more people could subscribe to you :(. Good luck man
I spent $400 on unboxing last week.
I keep thinking imma get something good, but never...
those who unbox are the ones who have the most or least hours in the game, it truly is unfortunate that neither get unusuals
Ay, I got an unboxing addiction (admittedly of a much smaller scale) after getting several valuable stranges and then a miami nights salty dog. I've only ever unboxed four or five cases. I did get lucky after unboxing a crate a friend gave me, but I wouldn't spend a lot to risk it again.

the best item i ever unboxed was a strange dead of night
and yes got a addiction from that...
Still no Unusuals in my inventory.
Well, to each their own after all. Best wishes for the future.
Rule 1 of gambling/unboxing: The house always wins
This is why I’ve traded for my Unusuals
My first unusual was a Steaming Bolted Bicorne.
i have unboxed and i have had no luck. I've have been bummed about it.
so is this why you sold the comic afro item?
Dregunburn he had to pay for car maintenance so he sold most of his unusuals
I was right way to unbox before i saw this video. What a coincidence
As someone who got lucky and unboxed a decent Unusual a few weeks ago, I can say do NOT unbox. I previously spent God knows how much on cases since 2015 with nothing, and it is not a healthy thing. I do the 2 new crates i find after that i save one for my collection then the rest are sold or deleted XD i would rather buy 4 mvm tickets and play for rewards for a few hours then open 2 5 second cases.
Well I dont even have the abillity to unbox anymore because im a Belgian lol
Finally afro. You're free. Now you can do your actual amazing content. ♡
600 keys can get you sum good unusuals
i miss your dead space lets plays.
You don't have to spend real money to unbox... trade up, gain keys, unbox them, trade again, once you start trading 100 keys is nothing
I think it's a keyboard
LOOTBOXES...
Thank you
so from what i understand. unboxing can get addicting and becomes like gambling (comment below is better if you wanna read this part xd) and just makes you want to keep going and going andn ever stop and when you do stop you just want to get back to it and thats unhealthy mentally, people also threat you with scam attempts and other stuff i cant remember BUT the point of this video (at least in my eyes) is: We can support the game without unboxing and without becoming addicted to it in an unhealthy way
Were are you?
really good video cosmic
Real winners dont gamble for virtual items.
Personally I think Valve should have a limit to counter the gambling. Such as, after opening X amount of crates, you should have a 100% chance to unbox any unusual from said crate. (Sure it would saturate the market, more on that below.)
More than ANYTHING I solidly believe the unusual market should have NEVER exceeded it's current value.
Which means I didn't have to spend $250 for one sitting.
yes
Why buy 600 crates when you could get keys? Lmao
Can you imagine 600 keys? Wow. You could get a lot of stuff with just a fraction of that!
Do you really have any rights to say that after... That?!
Guess it's a blessing they're banned here
1 of my subscribers said I should do a Colab ( pardon my spelling) with you saying that we have similar personalities.
Huh...
You cant even unbox anymore in my country haha (the netherlands)
I won't say it's a curse unless you have a gambling addiction. Yes, unboxing sprees are considered as gambling, just like the lottery. If you know you can control yourself, I don't see too much of an issue for unboxing. I do agree unboxing videos should not be uploaded, however. Maybe it's okay if you share the fact you unboxed a certain item, whether people believe it or not. Just don't really need to build the interest and inspiration to.
Heh remember that kid on that one server you were on. Yeah sorry I'm not bragging if this offends some peeps it was random I just met him
I see you in tf2
I’m 24scheeitzercn
I understand your pessimism. But Scream Fortress X came out and people are unboxing the new crate so....
Just stop.
