I just pulled the cylinder off mine today. Gota replace the rings. ( 3rd time I have the jug off ) First time I was going 60 and the and the piston welded to the the cylinder wall then let go! Quite scary! I have had mine since 1998. I have put 10k on the clock. Don't go 12 volts. If you dont wanna, you don't have to run a battery. Your lights will be dim but it will run. You can get a 6 volt battery from home depot in the alarm section. Also rethink repainting the tank if it has no rust inside. There is a clear coat that stops rust on the outside of the tank. It is called patina to preserve the paint in the in the state it is in.
Thanks for the advice! Yeah that would be pretty scary having weld to the piston wall while going that fast. I haven’t worked on it much but I have been messing around with ways to pull out the dents on the tank without having to buy a dent puller. The plan is to complete repaint the tank at some point. Same design just slightly different colors, to ones that are available in spray cans from duplicolor. I kind want to change to 12v for brighter lights. I got a new headlight bucket with 6v led and I don’t think it cuts it. Mind you that’s at idle with no battery still. I have some buddies that want to do a multi day trail ride across washington next summer, the plan is to take this bike since I don’t have anything better so I have to get it ready for that. - wiring done - new neutral indicator plug on case (that shot out the other day when I started it and was puking oil) - change seals on the case covers - new tires and tubes - service suspension - replace other wear parts Then I can move onto thing like paint, 12v conversion and redoing the seat
