Welcome to my channel and today i am here to help you with a simple step by step guide of loft boarding. At Southern Loft Boarding we are experts with over 13 years experience in Loft Boarding and Loft Insulation. We treat lofts, Government grant refusals, room in the roof and asbestos refusals. We provide loft insulation for any type of property.
Boarding a loft makes for a fairly easy DIY project that is incredibly useful in increasing the storage space in your home. The loft is often completely underused, so if you’re not planning on turning it into habitable space with a loft conversion, then adding loft boards and using it for effective storage can be a great solution.
Loft boards are fixed together relatively easily, but working withing the confines of the loft’s available space can make boarding a loft a tricky endeavour.
In this short video we showed installing raised loft boarding which was about 20 sqm using Osb boards and new joists running at 90 degree angles to the original joists. There was a lot of wiring and pipework under certain sections and we had to be careful not to disturb these too much.

• 4 inch joists
• 89 mil cls joists
• Tape measure
• Drill
• Impact driver
• Saw to cut boards to size
• Protective gear including gloves and a dust mask

Hi complete novice to this and just had our loft re insulated but the wool is like 200m thick and have existing chipboard (which is about an inch thick) that I want to place back on top - I want to place timber on top of existing joists to give the insulation room for air but unsure the size of timber I should get to place on top to lattice and size of screws to fix with - can anyone help? Many thanks
I want to do this, but there is a water pipe running along AND OVER one of the beams. I'm not sure what to do. That pipe can't be changed, it's connected to the fire sprinklers. I'm thinking to raise the whole floor right over the pipe, but I'd need way more wood than I'm willing to get... what should I do?
With the tongue and groove OSB loft boards, is that to increase the integrity of the floor joints or is that just a small detail?
As in, is there a reason to using it rather than sheets of OSB ripped down to size as I'd imagine that would be more budget friendly
we just prefer the smaller osb boards as they are easier to handle and cut on small spaces.
@@MrBish11 thanks for the fast response, I figured it was more for convenience but I suppose if ripping OSB isn't an issue for someone then it comes down to budget :)

No, I wouldn't, too much weight on the ceiling
is it structurally safe to add more joist on joist without having any weight issue?

Is it essential to lay batons? Wht difference would it make if I just lay boarding over existing joists?
How did you screw in the 2x4 timber? As in what length screws did you go for?
Would a pin gun work instead of screws?
Or maybe a nail gun?
Would it be quicker?

Hi, no we use screws as they can then be taken up again if needed although a nail gun would make it a lot quicker for us.

Perfectly safe for storage purposes, yes use cross cls 89mm at 400mm maximum spacing, brace underneath all board joins with scrap wood etc.

2.4m. cls at 89mm
Hi great videos .. just about to start mine and was going to do the battens at 600mm centres is this ok ? And the insulation .. is it ok as is 270 mm can you just put the new joists on and the boards or do I need extra wool . Thanks .
400 - 600mm spacing is fine, use at least 200mm insulation, the boarding will add to the thermal layer.

I knew I had seen 1 of your vids were you are dealing with uneven joists. How do you get around that ? When I lay a 3X2 across my joists on some joists it’s not touching. How do you resolve this 🤔 cheers
Use any spare wood as a wedge where the gap is, just make sure that it is stable.
@@MrBish11 I will cut a load of various width inserts before I start, it might keep the swearing to a minimum. 👍
Is it better to use additional beams instead of loft legs?
I want something quiet strong as an to put a room up in my loft so I can have an home office.
Would the way you done it be strong enough?
It should predominately be used for loft storage but I have done a few jobs where the client has used it for other purposes such as an office.

Hi Grumpy man, how do you work out cross brace timber sizes?
My original joists are 75mm x 38mm and span ~12ft from a central support to eaves each side.
Appreciate any advice.
Preferably use 89mm cls, but if low pitched use 63mm at 400mm spacing, overlap each cls by about 4 inches at each end and screw into each other to keep the same height - hope that this makes sense.

Hope you don’t mind me jumping in on brace timber size query. My Binders are 112mm tall. I was thinking of using 120mm brace timber so the OSB cover the binders either side of the loft and the binder in the middle. So basically binders will be hidden or should I use shallower braces so the binders are visible. Is this just down to preference and cost ?? Cheers
@@markevans3026 Hi Mark, we always go under the top of the binders (runners) as the cost and weight would be too high otherwise !

Does the two end of the board meet on a joist?
Yes
I guess boards are laid perpendicular to joists and we try and meet the board end on th joist as much as possible. Is that right, Mr. Grumpy Man ?

Hi how do you fix the stud timber to the joists? Just with Screws?
Hi Jeremy, yes we use 2 inch x 8 wood screws, these work really well with the cls joists that we use.
@@MrBish11 do you screw them through the sides of the CLS timber or straight through the top?

No, because you are not doing anything structural and not taking out any of the insulation, we have done hundreds of new builds this way.

Hi. What size screws did you use for this and how were the CLS attached? Did you screw through at an angle into the joists or straight through the top of the CLS into the joist?
2 inch twin thread wood screws, screw into the cls downwards angle about three quarters of the way down into the joists.

So there is no insulation under the new boards?
No just roll back the top layer

Having a lot of issues in our Victorian house as the wood is warped and high low spots
I don't know how to deal with it mate
@@deepmystic5850 brace up any areas that you have a dip, just use cut off osb and screw into the joists, should be fine as I have done that hundreds of times, just take your time with it and do it right for safety etc

But I have had to stop this project
When I was moving around on some of the ceiling joist I was feeling a fair amount of movement
It has made me paranoid about adding more weight to it
I think I am going to hire someone to come and fix the current joist
It wasn't alot of movement but it felt in some places the ceiling below was about to crack or giveway
