My husband grows about 99% of the food we eat. We buy some meat, don't eat our chickens, make our own food. We are so grateful to do this, living in Tasmania. We appreciate that many people can't do this where they live, so am glad you can eat healthily. ❤🇦🇺

Same here in Australia. Our government is currently having a hearing with our two major supermarkets, questioning them on the high prices. Covid is used as an excuse. It is price gouging and greed. The farmers are not getting any benefit from higher prices.

There is a LOT of price gouging on all over - talk to farmers, they will tell you prices have not increased as much but profits are skyrocketing for shareholders!!! LOVe your videos !!!
farmers in Canada will tell you the exact opposite and the farmers I know in the US say the same thing. Their costs have doubled in some cases...that is a 100% increase over the last 18-24 mos. Farmers are paying today in some cases 300% increase in things like fertilizer and pesticides, fuel is up by 50 % in most places, costs more to run the equipment, more to truck the produce more to grow the produce, seed costs , many farmers have spoken about 100-500% increases in seed costs since 2020. You can find farmers all over Canada and the US talking about the sky rocketing costs to do business and so yes all of those costs are getting downloaded to the consumer. "Corporate greed" is the sound bites our collective governments have been using for the past several months combined with paid on line bots to foster this thought that its just the grocery store owners who apparently woke up one day and decided "hey, I know, lets increase a can of Campbells soup today by 76% that should be fun".
No, Grocery retail actually runs on very low mark up, always have. They make their money on the quantity they sell, or the extremely quick turn over of their inventory. I have worked in retail in Canada for over 32 years and was raised on a farm. I know how much the cost to run a farm has sky rocketed and I know the reasons why, I also know that most big grocery chains are publicly traded and their profit margins have not sky rocketed in the last 3 years that is just not so. Do they make money? of course they do, its the whole point of being in business and they commit to their shareholders a certain amount of profit and they also commit to the banks how much profit they will bank in a year, they can not just deiced oh times are really tough for people right now as the cost of everything has sky rocketed so we will hold our prices and take less profit, shareholders and banks do not take to kindly to this way of thinking.

Groceries have risen insanely everywhere. I've lived in Ireland and the UK for the past 5 years, and when I visited California earlier this month I could not believe how much food costs had risen.
Prices tend to vary around the States, thankfully as California is very expensive. Where I live, not as much!
Yes! You are so correct! I just posted that my CA food purchases are as expensive or MORE expensive than the same items (eg. Oatly, or eggs) as on Svalbard! Crazy!

When the price of oil, which gas and diesel come from, that is what you get. Tractors, combines, trains, trucks, and other transportation relies on fossil fuels. It is going to get worse if the Democrats get rid of fossil fuels. If we go to all electric transportation and tractors and combine, a loaf of bread will be 10, maybe 20 dollars a loaf. Plus, fertilizer is made from fossil fuels, getting rid of that would decrease production, therefore supply. Demand is increasing because of immigration (legal or illegal). World and USA population is increasing. There are not as many farmers as there was 10 to 20 years ago. Farmland is going into CRP and not being used. All of this is a recipe for a disaster in the supply chain. Grain, meat, fruits and vegetables, fish, and among other commodities. It is going to get worse.

I’m shocked every time I food shop. The prices are so high ! It’s amazing how much they keep going up. Not to mention the number of food recalls in the USA 🇺🇸. Sending love 💕 and best wishes. 😊

In my area, food prices have only gone up since the “supply chain” issues caused by the shutdowns in 2020-2021. They never reduced once the supply chains were back on track.

I estimated your haul at $340 USD. Pretty similar to what we spend here in southeastern Michigan. I do think we have lost perspective on what is “expensive.” I used to buy a head of lettuce for about $1 and a dozen large eggs for about $1.29. Now they both can be almost double the cost depending on the stores. Can I say how cray adorable is Mr. Grimm eating his Lobnobs!😂. Love you Guys!!!❤
Eggs here in California are almost $5 a dozen, so I got my own chickens and supply my coworkers and neighbors with free eggs. Bread that 3 years ago was $1, is now almost $4
Still, shopping at places like Walmart-there the food prices are still pretty cheap. Veggies are damn expensive, but things like fresh meat are quite reasonable.
@@renatal1972 a dozen eggs in Canada is almost $8.00 (for organic) you can get a doz for $6.00 in some places.

I like how there is a difference between "do not eat/sell" and food that is "best tasting by a certain date" and that they discount it so it doesn't go to waste. I've had a lot of food over the years that is past the best tasting date and it's still tastes good to me.

My office was across the street from Stubb’s BBQ. I worked there for almost 30years. We could always hear the bands practicing. It was especially loud during SXSW, but oh what fun to people watch! It’s so weird that the bbq sauce is shipped all the way to Svalbard from Austin, Texas! But then again, that is our slogan; Keep Austin Weird 😊

In Canada ours have doubled in price as well. We now rotate what we buy. We never get everything that we need. We also buy more frozen veggies and fruit so things don't go bad.

Grim and the Lob Nobs! Oh my! This was so interesting. Maybe do another one where you take us through your day of eating. I love those.
Food prices in NY STATE (The City is even worse) are approaching dire. I'm even making my own yeast and other products again. I'm going to haul out all my canning supplies that I put away years ago and hit the farmers markets (knock out the middle man) this summer and can and freeze as much as possible. We go to a local farm that raises their own cattle for beef and I'm trying to source chicken.
I raised my own as a kid, but where I am now we aren't zoned for it or I would. I have a huge backyard that if I was able to get a garden set up, I could manage it, I just don't have the strength (or funds) to get it going. WE had a full acre veggie garden when I was kid. We hunted, foraged, fished, whatever it took. We never went hungry but dinners of bullfrog legs, and crayfish, with lots of bluegill, sunfish, and perch were common in the summer.
You can buy lots of processed foods cheaper than healthy foods, but even then, learning that mass farming has taken so much nutrients out of the soil, it's not getting into the foods we eat and we need supplementation of (non synthetic) vitamins and minerals...
Honestly the prices aren’t crazy different from where I’m at in the states (South Carolina) the chicken being $15 is insane and one Avacado for $4 compared to like $1 a piece here. But thank you for educating us! It’s cool to see the difference.

I mean she is in the middle of nowhere, so no big surprise there.From my experience avocados tend to be quite pricy in Europe because they are mostly flown in long distance while in the US you can get them from the South or Mexico.
I live in Anchorage, AK. We are in a similar situation with food needing to be shipped by barge or air. Our prices are very similar to yours. I lived in Stavanger 25 years ago and didn’t notice too much difference from Alaska then.
This is such a beautiful store, one stop shop. Grocery prices have gone up everywhere, I can see your prices being more due to the shipping costs, but considering that, some items did not seem that bad. Love your channel. 🇨🇦

I’m American. I do one big Costco run a month for household items like paper towels, toilet paper, cleaning supplies, etc. When it comes to grocery shopping I like to go 2-3 times a week because I don’t like my refrigerator to be packed to the max. I like getting a few days of groceries at a time. Also, I’ve found I have less food waste when I shop that way.

Your food shopping videos are my favorites! I love to see what others prefer to eat, the different groceries that are offered, and the cost of them. I average about $110 to $125 a week US for myself and husband. I also get good ideas of what to eat by watching your videos!

I love watching the grocery hauls. Living on the east coast of the US even I was a little surprised at how much some of your items were now. I get heated when my avocados cost over $1 a piece. I can’t imagine them being as much as you paid. The Bbq sauce was a smidge more expensive for you than where I am though and your Oatly is cheaper. For us it’s about $4.49 per container. Oh yea you’ve gotten me addicted to it as well. Thanks for that 🤣

I'm always surprised at the Oatly price. It's $4.69 where I am. But I guess since it's a Swedish brand, it makes sense it's more expensive in the States. The can of tuna for over $5 is crazy!

What our supermarkets in the U.K. have been doing is getting rid of all the cheap lines, which is what I used to primarily live on. For example, there would be flour, canned tomatoes and other real basic ingredients that you could use for actual cooking, which you don’t really notice any difference when they are all cooked together. Some were not lower quality, some were just odd shapes, some were a bit bland etc. but it didn’t matter if you could cook. These were all under the loss leader category. Unfortunately they have almost entirely disappeared. So where I could previously pick up a bag of flour for under 30p, I’m now paying full price…..which is several multiples of that easily for the supermarket own version, or into £2.00 and above for branded. Canned veg instead of under 30p (I remember paying 8!) you are again having to pay multiples of that because there just isn’t a loss leader version available. They were all called things like, Tesco value, Waitrose essentials, Sainsbury’s basics. ……..if they were so essential where have they gone?!
These ranges were basically there to get people in the store and written off as a loss. But unfortunately we relied on them to actually eat. And they have taken them away. And the offers they used to put the regular food on are few and far between as well. So it’s not just the cost overall rising, it’s the massive changes in availability of food at the bottom end of the range. Most notably in the form of cheaper basic ingredients which are simply not sold. The only thing you can get cheaply is premade rubbish. But if you want flour, or fat, or cheese, or veg then forget it. Unless there are added chemicals you’ll be out of luck.
Seems purposeful, doesn't it? ugh.

for pennsylvania, lehigh valley, we spend about 800.00 per month, which is up considerably from the previous years, and we do lots of fresh veggies and fruits, but we also eat out about 6 or more times a month.
Is that for two adults or do you have other family members to feed?

Hey....Lehigh Valley here too (who would have thought!! lol) The biggest thing I have noticed is that it doesn't really matter where you shop...the prices are about the same everywhere. I have seen things cost more at Walmart and PriceRite than Wegmans. Weis' prices are soooo high. The bad thing at Wegmans is their lack of variety. Yes, they have nice fresh things...but I am tired of seeing Wegmans brand everywhere when I want a certain brand.

I use the “ Almond Cow” milk maker. It is so easy to make my oat, coconut or cashew milk or creamer. I figured the cost of buying special milk versus making it greasy . And I’d rather know what was in it. Just a thought. Thank you for always sharing !

these prices are very on par with prices of similar items in Canada, some are actually less. Our chicken would be more than what they paid and our cheese and dairy are also higher here.

I. have so much work to do but I just HAD to sit down and spend a few minutes in my favourite place I've never been to with some of my favourite people (and puppy) I've never met! :-) Thank you for forcing me to slow down and really enjoy something that isn't work-related. I loved watching your shopping trip and yes, prices are INSANE! I've been doing vacuum sealing of dry goods and canning of meals and ingredients for a couple of years now and have a bit of a stock put aside at what were definitely lower prices. But seeing you and Christopher shop reminds me of how truly expensive it's all gotten. Thanks for the education and please thank Grim too because he always makes me smile which is great for the psyche and the endorphins 🙂

Also those dishcloths….you can wash and sanitize them in the top rack of the dishwasher. Here in the States, we call them Swedish dishcloths. I have so many of them as I absolutely love them.

Wow!!! 😮 Your budget / spend is nearly £1,000 per month. That is insane compared to the UK for a couple. We - 2 adult household - spend about half that!!! I think I need to stop moaning about grocery prices here!

Love this kind of videos! My husband and I love cooking but lately we've been cringing every single time we go to pay at the grocery store. We're in Spain and we've definitely noticed the price hikes. Prices are intense worldwide to say the least. We've been adjusting and managing but it's been quite a ride.

What a relaxing video with my Sunday morning coffee! I think we're all obsessed with the price of groceries right now. I have to wonder when, and if, prices will begin coming down.
Thanks for sharing , that was pretty interesting, while some prices are higher then here in the states others seem reasonable. I think you should scan the receipt an save it for a future grocery haul so you can compare prices for future grocery hauls on common things you buy.

That grocery store is actually amazing considering where it's located. I visited a handful of times during summer 2023. I bought a lot of faxe kondi there lol. One of those times I saw grim tied up out front and I said hi to him!

We are two as well as my son is an adult but still live with me. and I don't spend as much. The crap cost a lot , like in our country (I am from Switzerland). If I only buy essential and fresh food (I am vegetarian), it will cost me around 500 chf /month plus maybe 100 chf for things you don't buy weekly, like toilett paper, soap for dish, etc.... But living on an island def makes it more expensive as well

Prices are up here, too. We used to spend $400.00-500.00 a month, now it's closer to $750.00 a month. That includes cleaning supplies, laundry detergent, etc. We are looking g forward to the local farmers' market opening soon... love buying fresh produce locally.
This video was very interesting. It is crazy how high the food prices have gone. We have a monthly food budget of about 500€, so to see you have to pay 300€ per week is mind blowing

I think you guys would absolutely thrive with a Gardyn…FRESH greens & herbs ALL THE TIME. I buy my own seeds and grow what I want…variety of lettuces, tatsoi, chard, kale, basil…most greens thrive in it. If you make space in your home, do 2 or more units for peppers, tomatoes, beans, cucumbers etc.
I close up ours in the summer as it’s too warm inside for it but I grow veg outside then. I highly recommend it, I love ours so much.
Also making and using your own sourdough starter…I bet you guys could do really well with both of these and have fresh, less expensive goods at the ready. Thanks for all of the wonderful content ♥️
