    Warm audio make awesome equipment! Really good hardware. I think I noticed a bit of a difference on THD and response from both of them. The WA76 sounded a bit more trebly plus easier to distort and the UA sounded with fuller low and low mid frequencies and cleaner at higher input levels, specially on distorted guitars. I guess that it depends on what you are after. WA comes pretty close though. Thanks for the video!

      Azael Buendia Revive Audio!!! I bought my unit from them, and it is a much more solid buy. I am OVER ECSTATIC ABOUT MY WA76, especially coming from them with the mod. You van push it hard, and it is AMAZING, and doesn't loose bottom like the stock versions.

    Sounds like Warm Audio recreated the WA76 after the UAD 1176, not the UA 1176 version. What a great misunderstanding. Hm, I'd prefer the plugin then, it's more convenient.

    The Warm Audio people took a lot of shortcuts with this thing, give it to the people straight. I ended up buying one only because it was modified from the start. The stock versions loose bottom end when cranked. Point Blank. I guess it's ok if you don't push it, but you need to have these modified when you get them. I didn't know they were that bad until everybody I talked to said the same thing. The guys at Revive Audio straightened me out though. They gutted the whole inside and did what they needed to to get my unit right. They even modded the power supply. I'm impressed. Warm is a good company, but they fell short with these because of cutting corners. The guys at Revive Audio left the Cinemag Transformers, but replaced just about everything else. They bypassed certain things in the signal path as well to get a better performance. I have the Warm Audio Tone Beast mic preamp and it is a sheer work of art!!!! They are even calling it the Avalon Killer because it really is that impressive. Can't believe they fell short on the 76'. It's all good. With guys like the dudes I went to you don't have to worry about it. LOL.

    I think the 1176 is quality wise a notch above the Warm because it attributes more to variables like opulent, deep, etc. But the Warm can be very useful, especially on vocals due to it's strong harmonics and aggressive nature. You can here the internal components clipping. But the fundamentals are weak relative to the harmonics which excludes it from specific tasks. The context will decide. Thank you very much for the comparison !

  • @s4salenow
    @s4salenow 7 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    Unfortunately, judging from the needle responses, you didn't match the attack and release times between the two units :) you set the knobs to the same number values however, each unit seems to respond totally differently at the same settings. Still, the WA76 *IS* an amazing unit and well worth its price!

      Yeah this is actually far more accurate than any other shoot out where they are at the same ratio. I have a wa-76 and the studio I work at has a couple 1176's and I can definitely say that the WA76 has much more drive that the original 1176. I actually suprisingly like the WA76 better!

      There are small differences in the tolerances of most of the parts in these units, especially in potentiometers. Even if you look two units from the same year and same company there would be slight variances in how you set each of them unless their a factory matched pair. That’s just one of the many idiosyncrasies of analogue gear.

  • @zackingraham8718
    @zackingraham8718 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    The WA sounded better, more crisp and more present in the high end on all sources except the kick drum. It had plenty of low end but sounded muddled like a big 808 drum. The guitar and vocal turned on and came to life each time the WA76 switched on. Very impressed. I do think some tweaks could account for the muddled kicks on the WA. And for the presence on the UA. Im poor so Warm Audio it is.

    the difference on vocals is quite evident, Warm Audio seems less 3D, more colored like it's trying to act like a colored compressor on purpose. I actually find UAs to always sound cleaner than clones, maybe because the clones always desperately want to sound "vintage"

    just received my WA87 today..Hooked it up to my TB12 and WA76 and put it threw a few test, and it is a very nice Mic. You just have to try it for yourself. I was amazed of the tones that you can get from it. I did another test with the Rode K2 and the AT 2035. The WA87 Topped them both, but this is my ears and my Producers Ears... if you get a chance, just to into a Music Store and see if they will let you try one out, you will be amazed. There is a mid range bump in the WA76 compared to the UA1176 giving the UA more depth and openess. Whereas the bump in the WA gives it more presence. EQ could/might change either, depending on what you want. It could be a good test, to try to EQ the WA to match the UA and see if that's the only issue.

    I have a WA76 here and feel the same way about the audio files in this video as I do about my WA76. On most resources, I end up not liking the final product due to the strange high-end frequency/ artifacts this box imparts on it. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE how this box compresses a signal, I just don't like the high-end. To me, the UA-1176 was perfect. Some people may think the subtleties are minor while I think they are a major part of the final sound or the decision to keep that final sound. The UA handled the low end much better as well. There was a definite weight to the audio that I couldn't find from the WA-76.

    The point of buying an expensive compressor is not only for sound, because most copies and clones are able to “compress”. You pay for build quality, you pay for good components, and good quality control. Which I don’t feel warm audio has, they spend so much in advertisement so where do they save money where others don’t? Buy what you want, but buy gear you’ll never have to service and will arrive perfect, not unlike all the horror stories of Warm Audio where things arrive broken and with bad quality control.

      The lead guitar was literally the only one that I thought /maybe/ I'd prefer the UA over the WA but only because, since the WA just has more of a bite in the tone, it felt a bit harsh. But then again, that's in solo. In a track the WA might sound better ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
      If it is still a little harsh, a simple lowpass is a hell of a lot cheaper than buying the UA over the WA.

    Hi guys, I'm from Russia! Some say it is better for WA as well? This compressor is simply different, there is a clear equalization of the middle and upper middle, while the original 1176 focuses on the lower middle and bass. On the barrel you can hear it, the guitar is perfectly audible, the vocals not really - I think just the song unsuccessful. (I wrote in Russian, thanks to the translator)))

    so for the sake of chimmin in... I actually thought that the fact the settings weren't the same was a cool thing, talking about the input and output more so than attack and release. Seems like you guys were going more for the sound vs matching settings. Matching settings never seems to work between different manufacturers...with that said they were really close and I'm sure with a tad more tweakage might be almost undiscernibly close, I did hear the warm sort of brighten up a hair and that may be a good thing or maybe its because the warm is brand spanking new and the UA stuff has been truckin along for a bit. I've heard from all the big boys how these things go "out of spec" with time and Andrew Scheps likes it on his gear..I don't know if that's what's up here, but it would make sense if it was or maybe the Warm is just brighter. anyway, I thought the wa76 was awesome and I dig warm...I have the wa2a and wa87 and am stoked! thanks guys

    As is usually the difference, the UA has a fuller, more defined low end than the Warm version. Owning both, i’ve come to also feel like the UA just sounds better the longer I have it, while the Warm version has become a bit sterile sounding to me after a couple years. At one time, when I was less experienced, I would have preferred the sound of the WA, but now I would favor the UA, without question, if money wasn’t a consideration. To me, improvements are very subtle, and most probably wouldn’t notice much of it, but there’s a cumulative effect i’ve found with using the more ‘high end’ piece that seems to work best for me, although that surely would not apply to everyone, so make sure you properly formulate your expectations to suit yourself, first and foremost.

    im a professional apparently...i have grammys. I could BARELY hear the difference....I can only imagine in a mix. for the cost differential ill take the warm Audio please. For the snob in me, ill take the originals.

      The King Try getting a Wa76 modified by Revive Audio. Thats what I did for an extra 250 bucks. You'll really lose your mind when you hear THAT!!!! TRUST ME!!!!

    What are these folks complaining about? It's a great test I think. Totally impressed by the WA76, sounds as good if not better than the UA 1176. Listening through UA 2192 converters and Genelec 8040s monitors here, I think the WA76 has a tad more sparkle to the sound and I really like that.
    The alternative would be to find a original 1176 in good shape, good luck with that. Just saw one on the Vintage King website and it was almost $ 6000, unbelievable!!

    An off topic question, how come for every single one of these high-end gear shoot-out video, the drum audio examples used always sound like shit? lmao snare: poorly-tuned ringing trash can, kick: literal cardboard,

  • @DrumsJulz
    @DrumsJulz 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great video!
    But sorry kids, nothing sounds like the original 1176!
    There's just more meat to it!
    Sounds much beefier, fuller!
    Ok, not that much, but noticeable.
    Again, for the price, the WA76 sounds awesome.
    Soundwise though, UA1176 wins.

      DrumsJulz My Wa76 was modded from the start by a company called Revive Audio. It has as much beef as the 1176, TRUST ME!!!! Warm did cut corners on the 76's, but when modded by Revive, SMH... PURE BLISS!!! I LOVE MYYYY UNIT!!!

  • @simonbjr18
    @simonbjr18 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    In my opinion, this kind of comparision is ridiculous... "I can't hear the difference...It's better then the classic...whoooo wow."
    But the big suprise is when you work with them, and in context they sound nothing to the real thing. (Every pro knows that, and thats why they don't sell the classic gear, and fill up their rack with WA)
    The classic, always a classic, and no compromise.
    Btw! I don't say that you can't go with this gear, just don't get fooled by the marketing. The two gears are NOT the same! And they are so far frome each other... And the results will be dissapointing if you are searching for the classic sound.
    Same when you would like to buy a mic. Hear the results in context. Then choose.

  • @MervinRijo
    @MervinRijo 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I bet you, no one can identify them if it was blind test, you my be able to hear subtle differences but not fully identify it, overall this is sunjective at the end the average listener dont care what element they used in a Mix they just hear a record that's it. they are not going to Listen the Low end, or the mids, neither high end... Peace!

      I've got 3 DBX 160's and a WA76. I prefer the 160's on kicks and floor tom, the WA76 on the snare. Love them both but they act different to certain things.

      I'm gonna run it in my vocal chain

    Sorry, they do not sound the same at all, my opinion, WA is completely saturating, it makes the high end so arsh, you can hear it clearly on the guitar, but on other sources it’s still there. This kind of saturation does not sound coming from transformers but i guess is all the signal path low quality... UA is cleaner, does not color at all. Much, much better. These differences to me remain also in a mix. A bad sounding source is always bad. Settings were not matchad.
