1) Red is always positive, and yes... polarity matters with DC current. Most modern circuits will be protected from damage from reverse polarity, but not always. Red is "hot" and + 2) The frunk "jump start" ONLY works if the car is dead. This is to prevent theft from the frunk. It is only meant to be used when the car can't open the frunk itself. 3) The phone app uses Bluetooth to open the frunk, that's why it worked. This is so you can open the car quickly even when the car is sleeping or otherwise off the grid.

BTW. The frunk wires, the one with the red strip is the Positive wire. Industry standard is Red Positive, Black or Green Negative. For a power input system. Lots of different colour combinations in wires are used for different purposes, but for a two wire battery/power in hook up, like the front trunk open wires, this doesn't change. PS. Well done on working out a way around the issue.
Not your fault the car battery died, so it's good she took that into consideration for the review :) Your license plates always give me a giggle, it's great that you had a chance to take out the uwu, even if for less than good reasons 😂

Today I checked out your oldest videos and you are exactly who I thought you were! I used to watch your reptile videos back in the day. Amazing to see how far you have come :D
So I think what happened was the battery was dead enough to not power the main computer but still alive enough to open the trunk. So if the Tesla is working and powered the two wires in the front do not let you open the frunk (so that people can't just break into any Tesla with a 9v battery). So if the battery was more dead powering the wires would have worked. I guess there is a middle area where the car is like partially working
lol you shorted both of the 9v batteries out! they were just bouncing around in your toolbox if the negative and positive touched one of those wrenches which it probably did multiple times it short circuited the 9v battery 😢 Also she parked bad?! U should park in a space not blocking the lot 😅
Never feel bad about owning multiple vehicles. Variety is the spice of life and it's no different with cars. Each one is different, unique, serves a different function sometimes (as in your case, a good extra to have on hand), or it is just a completely different driving experience, which is part of the main reason some of us get different cars. EV or ICE, cars are awesome.
17:24 Teslas have a 12v battery mostly because its a standard voltage that is easy to find parts for (to reduce manufacturing costs) and all the electronics needed to step down the voltage of the larger battery would add tons of complexity and be super inefficient.
Yeah, DC-DC step downs are a bit more efficient than an AC-DC step down but they still waste a ton of energy and create unneeded heat too. It would have been better if tesla had just designed their car for everything to run off the main battery which is possible, but they cut corners by just adding the 12v battery. IF they had allowed the use of any 12v battery than i would be less critical about the choice, but the fact that they still force you to buy it when it is only used because they wanted to save on development time and part costs makes it a duck move IMO
@@zebraloverbridgetyou said yourself though- its more efficient to use a 12v battery. AND because they’re saving money in parts and development their cars are overall cheaper! The reason for the proprietary battery is they designed it completely differently from a regular car battery because the Tesla doesn’t need all those cranking amps to start an engine- it would reduce the life of the car battery DRASTICALLY to use a standard one. Also it’s not like they’re that more expensive than a regular 12v :) It would be cool if instead of a lead-acid battery they installed a lithium one that wouldn’t need to be replaced as often!
@@spaceman4782 They don't pass the savings on to the consumers though since they only let you use THEIR 12 v batteries which is the biggest issue tbh. not to mention that I doubt that we actually get any real savings
So what was supposedly special about the proprietary 12v Tesla battery? By appearances at least looks like a standard group 51r, the same battery that goes in like 80% of Hondas
There is nothing special there all 12 volt batteries you can get at any local parts store. Some of the new tesla uses a 48 volt battery. The older use 12 volt batter
I have found that older Tesla models, especially the 3 and Y models, did not pop the frunk, or did it only sometimes with a 9v battery. It works fine with 12v, or a jump starter. You could've used the other battery (the 12v, low voltage battery) youu brought, to try. Try it to know what works if it happens sometime again.
17:40 all the normal car parts are run off 12v radio, lights, blower, seats, etc. this is just due to it being a standard and cost effective for Tesla to go with it. From what I’ve heard it sounds like Tesla is trying to make all parts in house and design them for the high voltage battery eliminating the need for the 12v
Make sure to keep half a tank atleast in your car, it will ruin the fuel sensor if you go to E a lot, they're designed to be in a full tank and not an empty one
I live in Vegas where it gets as low as 28 degrees and as high as to 120 degrees so if my battery lasts 3 years, I'm lucky! More power to you and I hope your turo business grows...
" I don't know much about electricity". Clearly very true. Considering when the 9-volt battery didn't work, it didn't occur to you to try the giant 12-volt battery you brought with you.
I'm sorry but the one marked with red tape is positive, or +. You can use a pair of jumper cables from your Subaru's 12v battery to connect to the Tesla's jumppoints to not only open the frunk but also apply voltage to the Tesla's 12v system to open the doors
This was a helpful video. I’m now certain that I won’t be renting my car on turo. I don’t like how they practically force you to rent to people with less than 5 stars.
That car takes any 51R 12v battery. It's not proprietary. You can get them at walmart(cheaper) or any auto parts store(2x more expensive for no reason)
I'm only 7:30 into the video, but I've seen this happen a few times where the low voltage battery dies. Simply disconnecting the 12v battery and plugging it back in fixes it. In that case it wasn't a dead battery, it was a software issue where the car needed to be physically disconnected from the low voltage for it to reset.
6:46 newer Teslas may have a 15Volt Lithium Ion battery in lieu of a 12Volt Lead Acid battery. The LiOn batteries service life is supposed to be much, much longer.
I want to comment on 15:20, it’s pretty hard to hurt yourself on an EV as they are designed to keep techs safe when working on them. The 12v system won’t shock you and the 400v+ system will have warnings all over(orange/blue) and would shut down before you could touch it
i like the way you close your trunk on the subuwwu by touching the license plate. I do a similar thing with my car to not get finger prints on the back of it.
Was it a particularly hot day? Last year my car battery was working fine when parking at a hotel. Had three days in a row of 100F + temps outside. Car wouldnt start, turns out the temp completely shot the battery and the alternator wouldnt charge it. Had to be replaced
I just saw an interesting video from WeberAuto about their 16V LVB having a BMS system and the reasons it could shut the battery off, and ways to reset it. I realize that's different that this battery set up, but might be pretty good information for Tesla owners with the Li-Ion batteries.
All EVs and PHEVs have low voltage, 12-volt, lead acid batteries. It powers the vehicle's ECUs and works as a power relay to separate power from high voltage battery pack and network in the car
Sometimes 12V batteries just die without warning, get a battery tester (I have a $10 KingBolen BM550 and when comparing with my mechanic professional tester both had the same measurement on the same battery)
Wait what. Ofc you can buy parts from Tesla directly. Just look up the part number in the public parts data base from Tesla, create a ticked, write which parts you want, accept the amount to pay and they order it for you. Or is it different in the US? Im located in Germany.
The resons the frunk didn't open is because the 12V battery had still energy and it was still powering the car, it's a feature, otherwise anyone with a 9V battery could steal belongings on any tesla car
I suspect the 12v battery was mostly dead. Enough to turn the car off but not dead enough to prevent you from using the app to open the frunk and to disable the battery connections up front. I suspect that would be a huge flaw if people could open frunks with a 9v, so it must disable if there is still voltage in the system.
Glad it worked out hoped this video wouldn't also feature the brz having problems and was a little worried when the 9v tow hook trick didn't work it would end being a tow job (still seems odd that tricked worked like a charm on yours but not on the rental unless those cables have some internal damage). This has cemented it my mind there is such a thing as too much computerization for vehicles the fact you don't have a speedometer if the screen isn't working and you can't even pop the "engine bay" manually to swap a battery which is mainly powered by said battery seems like very odd engineering choices. Makes me wonder if tesla ends up in water can you even operate the doors still since those are electronic and not manual.

My 21 3LR 12v battery died after 2yrs 3mths and 75k miles. Car was parked in the garage and suddenly received a message on the Tesla app that there was a battery issue and to schedule a SC appointment. Without knowing what the heck was going on, I scheduled an appointment at my local service center for the next day at 0800. I then when out to find out what was going on and the car was acting up. It was dead on the drivers side but the passenger side opened, it had enough juice to pop the frunk. I pulled the 12v battery and put a battery charger on it overnight. I put it back in and was able to drive it 40miles to the SC, funny thing is the rear trunk latch failed at the same time but Tesla replaced it during the same appointment.
With the battery being dead it was probably draining enough power that one 9v battery wasnt enough. You can link 2 9v together btw, that might work in the future.

Great to see such a self-starting young man. It's kind of rare these days at your age. Your sense of humor and laid back attitude is also refreshing.
5 star human!
This video is a perfect demonstration/example of Freytag’s Pyramid. Love the channel and your storytelling. I appreciate after everything that happened you circled back to all the ways it worked out perfectly.
I love how this turned into a tutorial. Great to know!
"am I about to die? *tries* nope we good" lol your crushing life brother thanks for sharing 💙
You're right
I’m glad I’m not the only one who roasts other peoples parking
Oh you'd absolutely hate me
@SherbetStardust I do hate you Squee ❤️

@@SherbetStardustsame…. I used to say “every tire across or on the line is 100 quid” god you won’t believe how much I racked up in a day (nearly 10k lol)
but I didn’t earn the money lol
16:08 One thing about ratings is all it takes is one asshat to ruin your reputation. I got a 4 star rating as an uber passenger for not talking to the driver. I was tired.
true. it will take a thousand more trips to get my 4.99 back up to a 5.0 on uber
Man, the story went from bad to worse, then ended greatly. Also, she's improving! You go random lady from NC. Dude, you're such a DIYer. I await what's next in this series. Thanks for posting.
13:00 you brought a giant 12V battery with you? Why not try that instead of the 9volts?
I was literally thinking the same thing lol
Great job Alex roadside assistance at it’s best!
W rescue
I would suggest instead of replacing your battery, take it to advance auto parts or any place and they will test the battery for capacity. They can tell you if it’s half there or if it’s close to dead. I do this every two years. Great video.
Also consider that the IRS allows more than $.50/mile deduction for wear/depreciation so Turo is costing you money, especially before taxes are taken out.
People that do this are brave. I value my property too much to let random strangers in or use without my supervising.
Aye man, I’ve been watching you here & there for about a year to so now and I gotta give you your props for holding things down in life bro. You’re definitely on the right track in life and if you maintain consistency and don’t give into your negative feelings or thoughts when they arise you’ll for sure be successful.
Keep up the solid work lil bro! You’re doing a solid job making it happen and you’re a great motivation.
Oh my god not the leaf callback 😭 the fact that you actually went herping during that is wild
1) Red is always positive, and yes... polarity matters with DC current. Most modern circuits will be protected from damage from reverse polarity, but not always. Red is "hot" and +
2) The frunk "jump start" ONLY works if the car is dead. This is to prevent theft from the frunk. It is only meant to be used when the car can't open the frunk itself.
3) The phone app uses Bluetooth to open the frunk, that's why it worked. This is so you can open the car quickly even when the car is sleeping or otherwise off the grid.
15:50 in my experience if there are any issues just get the trip cancled. Fix the car and relist.
I really enjoyed this video Alex. You have a way of narrating and editing these types of videos that is engaging and relaxing at the same time. Also I’ve noticed over the last year that I started watching your channel, you are like the most resourceful young guy I’ve come across. Stay great! 👏👌🏼
definitely can see a updated video on things i wished i knew when i purchased a telsa in the near future
Not your fault the car battery died, so it's good she took that into consideration for the review :)
Your license plates always give me a giggle, it's great that you had a chance to take out the uwu, even if for less than good reasons 😂
Oh my gosh totally random but I have come across your videos before and been confused as I could swear I have seen you before somewhere.
I was wondering if you could just open the frunk on a random Tesla on the street, guess not
lol you shorted both of the 9v batteries out! they were just bouncing around in your toolbox if the negative and positive touched one of those wrenches which it probably did multiple times it short circuited the 9v battery 😢 Also she parked bad?! U should park in a space not blocking the lot 😅
yo we love a sponsor that is so aligned with your content!
Also it’s not like they’re that more expensive than a regular 12v :)
It would be cool if instead of a lead-acid battery they installed a lithium one that wouldn’t need to be replaced as often!
@@spaceman4782They are using lithium batteries now.
You need another battery (like 12V) to switch on the contactors which connect the traction battery. This is needed on every EV.
I think it's actually 14v not 12
There is nothing special there all 12 volt batteries you can get at any local parts store.
From what I’ve heard it sounds like Tesla is trying to make all parts in house and design them for the high voltage battery eliminating the need for the 12v
man i love this mans videos literally makes anything interesting to watch XD
How does this not have a million views there was so much put into this video!
Now at 13:52 and still feeling confident. The frunk wouldn't pop because the low voltage wasn't actually dead.
Good stuff man. Thanks for this video!
ty!
glad this worked out okay and you got a good video out of it
it's fun watching you problem-solve
6:46 newer Teslas may have a 15Volt Lithium Ion battery in lieu of a 12Volt Lead Acid battery. The LiOn batteries service life is supposed to be much, much longer.
Bro you are hella chill, love the vids!
Turo is really dangerous, people race and vape, abuse your expensive Tesla
Nice wrap on the BRZ
Your troubleshooting skills are impeccable
You could’ve used the 12 volt battery you brought with you to open the frunk… maybe the 9 volt battery didn’t have enough power
Wau 5 star human
21:49 Rocket powered skateboard?
$90 for a new battery is a very very good deal especially for a Tesla with sensors and crap in it
I want to comment on 15:20, it’s pretty hard to hurt yourself on an EV as they are designed to keep techs safe when working on them.
Try jumper cables and a car battery or jump box
re 10:00 with the frunk, you'd have had your good 12 v battery on you you could've used instead of that 9v but the 9v is way more funny
I just saw an interesting video from WeberAuto about their 16V LVB having a BMS system and the reasons it could shut the battery off, and ways to reset it. I realize that's different that this battery set up, but might be pretty good information for Tesla owners with the Li-Ion batteries.
Supposed to isolate 12volt system by unplugging black plug under rear seat.terminals may be live from wiring side from hv battery inverter
Since the app worked it explains the 9v not working ; theft prevention
i wish i had more friends like you!
You're giving Michael Cera vibes and I am so here for it
Had this same 12v battery issue with a Hertz Tesla Rental, the tow truck driver taught me how to open the frunk. Car gave no warning also
"For the first time, in my entire life, I can actually justify owning 3 cars" sent me
All EVs and PHEVs have low voltage, 12-volt, lead acid batteries. It powers the vehicle's ECUs and works as a power relay to separate power from high voltage battery pack and network in the car
Hey you had a 12 v battery in the other car that you can use to open the frunk
Where do you ride one wheels. Im in the triangle area (also go to trc) and am looking for some more mountain bike trails
Sometimes 12V batteries just die without warning, get a battery tester (I have a $10 KingBolen BM550 and when comparing with my mechanic professional tester both had the same measurement on the same battery)
Thank you.
shouldnt have looser 9v batteries in a toolbox, the metal tools can cause a short and cause them to overheat and possibly catch fire
Wait what. Ofc you can buy parts from Tesla directly. Just look up the part number in the public parts data base from Tesla, create a ticked, write which parts you want, accept the amount to pay and they order it for you. Or is it different in the US? Im located in Germany.
Your Subaru tag caught me WAY off guard for a minute
The license plate "RAWR X3" is just lmao
The resons the frunk didn't open is because the 12V battery had still energy and it was still powering the car, it's a feature, otherwise anyone with a 9V battery could steal belongings on any tesla car
I suspect the 12v battery was mostly dead. Enough to turn the car off but not dead enough to prevent you from using the app to open the frunk and to disable the battery connections up front. I suspect that would be a huge flaw if people could open frunks with a 9v, so it must disable if there is still voltage in the system.
i opened the first tesla's frunk while the still working battery was connected tho :I
Glad it worked out hoped this video wouldn't also feature the brz having problems and was a little worried when the 9v tow hook trick didn't work it would end being a tow job (still seems odd that tricked worked like a charm on yours but not on the rental unless those cables have some internal damage).
I agree with your renter in that you do seem like a great human! I watch a lot of your videos and there’s is no doubt you are the most forgiving, chill person I’ve never meet but would love to someday cause now I see you also ride a Onewheel! Do you ever attend the group rides with oak city Onewheel or have you been to oak city shred fest? If not, you need to look that up because it is awesome. Oak city is a huge Onewheel community with people all over the country comes to Oak city shred fest!
New to channel TH-cam recommended me you make good content
thanks!
Zip tie a battery in a bag behind the front bumper so u never get stuck without frunk access
Was probably some security feature to not let some random person jump the trunk open
With the battery being dead it was probably draining enough power that one 9v battery wasnt enough. You can link 2 9v together btw, that might work in the future.
He just had to use his phone to unlock the frunk.
Tesla will 100% sell you a battery over the counter. Just picked one up in Raleigh over the weekend for $91
2x anywhere else
