Static shock (2000) tackled real-life issues like bullying, riots, homelessness, racism and more serious problems. Jimmy brought his dad's gun to school because he wanted the bullying to stop. This shows that a person can snap after suffering so much abuse. Bullying can bring out the worst in people.
As a person who was bullied myself as a child, I definitely understand where the OP is coming from. Moreover, nowadays when I see TV shows with kids being bullied, I’m like, “Where are the teachers? Where’s the principal?“
Thats pretty much life, it’s unfair. I was bullied when I was younger to the point of losing my mental and emotional state. I didn’t do anything wrong from my bullying but I did had unhealthy coping mechanisms from it, like Masturbation and overeating. There’s so much pain and abuse that anyone can take until it reaches a boiling point, but it’s especially problematic when you’re a teenager dealing with these types of issues.
Honestly, I think The Mask is a very dark episode other than Perfect. Why do I think that? The Mask shows a female character in an abusive relationship, and stuff like that really happens.
The "Jimmy" episode was the most accurate display of bullying including when the victim gets tired and decides to end it by bringing a gun and wanting to shoot his tormentor. That's why I loved Static Shock growing up because they weren't shy about series issues like bullying and disabilities.
Stepney Gets Lost is definitely peak for being a very dark episode of an engine nearly falling to his doom - especially since scrap is a graveyard for sentient machines. I remember being so terrified of this episode in childhood along w/ the other scary S5 episodes on Spills & Chills VHS, but w/ time I overcame my fear and is another standout episode of the show (once in a lifetime event that'll never happen again in later years).
My favorite part of "Haunted": Raven: "See, Robin? There's no one there." (Slade appears out of nowhere and kicks Robin hard enough to send Raven flying!) Raven: "SLADE!" Cyborg: "You saw him?!" Raven: "I don't know if he's real or not, but he's real to Robin, and that's *all* that matters. Robin *truly* believes he fighting Slade. And Robin... is losing!"

@@emersoninfinitystone5785 To me the most disturbing episode from series 5 was Skarloey and snow as well as put upon Percy because Both engines in both episodes were almost buried alive in avalanches of a rock slide or collapsing snowdrift
It was my favorite episode because Obsession has a price But hey Batman was Obsessed with Catching The Joker As For Robin He was Obsessed with finding Slade
Definitely glad to see the bullying episode from static shock appear on this list. It is always stuck out to me as one of the most important episodes of the series. There’s no way a cartoon episode like that could be remade today.
The darkest thing about Speed Demons is the fact the Powerpuff Girls are prisoners of Townsville. They can't leave for a weekend without worrying about it.
When I got older, the way they talked about how Charlotte and Drew weren't actually going to have a baby, the way it was acted and portrayed, my brain thought, wait were they just pregnant for awhile, didn't know and have a miscarriage? Because I've seen this on other dark cartoon lists, and yeah my brain kinda always thought thats what it was instead of just a wrong pregnancy test. Also, i'll admit the the no 1 choice is creepy but....its never super super dark or anything. Honestly I feel the episode with that kid, Keef, is way darker than you remember. They legit show his eyes getting ripped out and replaced with robotic eyes.
I rewatched that episode a few months ago and am wondering if it was a miscarrage myself. Because of course, it could only be portrayed so much as either that or a failed test, especially on a kid's show back in the 90's. I've seen miscarrages portrayed in more "grown up" (maybe not for kids, but also not like...R rated material) shows as well, such as All in the Family, so I kinda figured how it would most likely seem if it were that. Though man, that giant baby creeps me out to this day.
I really think the worst part of Failsafe comes in the next episode when they’re doing the therapy sessions. After initially storming out, Superboy reveals how he felt during the simulation; happy. With everyone dying around him, he finally got to know what being Superman feels like, so he was happy, and the guilt of that crushes him.
Putting an episode of Courage the Cowardly Dog on this list is kind of cheating, considering that show has a LOT of dark episodes. Like what about The Mask? That episode is really dark because the things shown in that episode about being in an abusive relationship is real.
What about the Darkwing Duck episode "Time and Punishment"? Where Gosling Mallard accidently goes into a future where her father becomes the twisted vigilante Dark Warrior Duck and rules St. Canard with an iron fist?
Growing Pains from The New Batman Adventures. Especially the last line Batman says in it. "Sometimes there are no Happy Endings..." I was devasted as or more than Robin at the end of that episode as a kid. Poor Annie...
3:27 WatchMojo, You guys get a gold star for recognizing that early Thomas as a whole isn’t scary or frightening. It’s the morals and overtones that make individual stories particularly scary. ⭐️
Here here!. ⭐️ A much better job than the whole video Ms. Mojo did not long back talking about “traumatising moments” in the show. Seriously, they to believed in and tried convincing everyone of the whole clickbait crap of Henry dying in the tunnel… what a laugh that was. 🤣
I'm all here for it. Early Thomas, or specifically the Railway Series books and Wilbert Awdry in this regard, knew how to address realistic dangers and its outcomes without straying too far from its primary audience, the children. Reminds the young audience that there are always fears and risks to tackle, even in your generally cheerful little choo choo world.
I remember that video and having the same reaction. Honestly, the way the narrator said ‘for kids!’ at the Henry bit was stupid, as if she was a mom who was horrified that Wilbur awrdy dared to show kids what happened when they misbehaved, and that jumpscare with the trucks song is nowhere near as terrifying as stuff in proper horror games like fnaf.
3:37 As a thomas fan, it's true that the classic thomas does have some dark elements. Stepney almost being scrapped got me worried as a kid. But In my opinion, I think henry being bricked up in a tunnel takes the cake Sorry if you think it's off topic there.

Hey there! When you decided to updated this video, make sure you’ll replace “Holly Jolly Secrets” from Adventure Time with “The Death of Clark Kent” from My Adventures with Superman in the top five catalogue. Seriously, the whole Black Mercy thing, the fact that Superman is betrayed by his friends, the Brainiac-possessed Superman and that scream Lois makes/those black eyes she haves in the end is PURE nightmare fuel.
I wasn't phased by a lot of scary things when I was a kid. I can't help but be reminded of that one time in Gargoyles when Broadway accidentally shot Elisa after finding and playing with her gun. Course, a lot of that show was dark to begin with, so I don't know if it truly stands out. Gargoyles still good though.
0:32 I still never understood how that happens if they have separate mouths 10:05 probably one of the meanest episodes in television history. Why is everyone happy without Timmy?
You try coming up with an unexpectedly dark episode of _Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends._ It’s either the one where Stepney nearly meets his fate at the Smelters (“Stepney Gets Lost”) or the one where a former Skarloey Railway engine takes a fatal fall off the Old Iron Bridge, a story within a story whose plot provides Peter Sam’s driver and Duncan’s crew with a gambit to make Duncan regret teasing Peter Sam about his unsecured trucks/freight cars breaking away (“Duncan Gets Spooked”), neither of which scared me.
I am surprised that Star Wars the clone wars is not mentioned as well as the walking with trilogy considering in walking with beasts a bird chick 🐣 gets eaten alive by ants
My pick is for The Owl House. The show in general did some pretty dark things, from The Collector sorta magically lobotomizing people he wanted as friends to Odalia Blight being a total karen. I think the Season 2 Finale King's Tide takes the cake though. The whole season really built up the Day of Unity and its use of the Draining Spell. Magic users with a certain sigil on them would be sapped of not just their magic power, but their life during an eclipse. And it is harrowing to see the effects in action. Which is why Emperor Belos is certainly a living warning about the dangers of cult leaders. But Luz decides that if he can't stop the draining spell, she can make Belos suffer with them, placing the sigil on him to blackmail him into stopping the spell. And when he gets a taste of his own poison, it's no less disturbing, and by extension, he shows how inhuman he really is. I think the most insane part is that some people knew of the Draining Spell and still tried to help Philip for their own selfish ends.
In one episode of ben 10 Omniverse everyone dies and ben has to recreate the universe as an exact copy. Everyone ben, has ever known is dead what's darker than that.
Macross Sage farewell big brother. . . Death of Roy Folker. And you missed the one that started it all. The death of Optimus Prime in Theatres. I was their opening night. Parents and kids were screaming. The lights came on the movie paused. Free snacks and drinks were given out to calm people down and then the movie resumed.
You know something that is interesting, after Hama told Katara that she is a bloodbender, the episode ends with the latter crying of how much it pains her. And yet, she decided to use it again on a fire nation soldier as revenge for the death of her mother. Which is kinda crazy yet also baffling that she wasn’t traumatized by that as she didn’t bloodbend Azula after Zuko got hit the lightning blast.
The one episode that scared me so bad was Courage the cowardly dog the episode with the slab curse. SERIOUSLY how the hell did they make THAT guy up he is just so creepy
nah, the episode where the PowerPuff Girls super speed into the future where Him is in control and everything is all dark and gloom cuz they weren't there is much darker than the one about their sister Bunny
Batman Beyond where Terry and Dana’s friend is forcibly put into a mental hospital is extremely dark. Season 2, episode 16 The Last Resort and it is a good commentary on mental illness. I’d even include the special Cartoon All Stars To The Rescue for the entire special. Also, there’s an episode of Pokemon where one of the Pokemon passes away from old age and it was an anniversary episode. It turns out ok in the end when that Pokémon’s friend sees him in the clouds and joins Ash and his crew but it definitely brings some tears. I know the host said no anime, but this episode was kind of dark. Holy smokes I forgot about the Over The Edge episode of The New Batman Superman Adventures. Good episode but very sad and I’m glad it was a dream. They went pretty far in the episode and it still shocks me. Also, it was confirmed by the showrunners and others involved in the Elephant Issues ep of Tiny Toon Adventures that the show was never banned truly. Nickelodeon showed it and it’s been included on the DVDs. Oh, and Apokolips…Now! from Superman: The Animated Series. Superman and the people of Earth right back against Darkseid but before he leaves to go back to his own planet, he’s told by Dan Turpin to get away basically. Darkseid smirks and unleashes his Omega Beams and destroys Turpin. He does it right in front of Superman who rampages and destroys Darkseid’s equipment he leaves behind before we see Turpin’s funeral and the dedication to Jack Kirby to end the episode. For a show that was a flagship show of Kids’ WB! and prided itself on being lighter than its Batman counterpart, this episode was incredibly dark. It was originally to end with Jonathan and Martha being the ones to die but the network said they’d have to be brought back somehow. So it was supposed to be even darker.
This forgot the one show that gave kids AND adults nightmares in multiple episodes. "The Amazing World of Gumball." Example: The Joy "The students have turned into literal joy zombies, yet the rainbow and creepy eyes don't help either. The Rival: Anais was only just a baby, but yet her creepy menacing face always gave us viewers the creeps, and she's even willing to kill HER OWN BROTHERS! The Fan: For kids, you might think Sarah just wants to be friends with Gumball and Darwin, but as you grow up to be teenagers, you realize that what she's doing is WAAAY creepier. The Disaster / Rerun: Just imagine losing your family and friends right in front of your face, and having it being done by your enemies. The Wicked: Mrs. Robinson is evil, plain and simple, but the thing that scared us the most, was the fact that she didn't even help Darwin when he was choking, and yet smiled at him and closed the door on him.

The episode "Code of Hero" from Beast Wars was pretty traumatic for me as a little kid in the 90s. Watching a fan-favourite character get brutally beaten and then die in his best frenemy's arms was a hard pill to swallow in a show where you were used to seeing the good guys always triumph.
Since Angelica's parents rarely give her attention,I can see why she's upset. The one thing I hate about Fairly Oddparents is no matter the wish Timmy makes, big or small, selfish or generous,it has to go wrong in the biggest way possible.

Robin did not let that one slide 😭😭
In the final episode to Transformers Prime Beast Hunters, Megatron shoots Bumblebee with his laser cannon in front of Optimus Prime and the others.
I would've put "The Island of Lost Dakotas" from "Milo Murphy's Law "
Bob's fate wasn't known until the 10th episode of season 3.
You forgot One Coarse Meal
In one episode of ben 10 Omniverse everyone dies and ben has to recreate the universe as an exact copy.
Everyone ben, has ever known is dead what's darker than that.
20:22 courage the cowardly dog is already a dark cartoon to begin with. The whole series should be on here
Reminds me of Captain Planet with the Bliss.
The last episode of clone wars should’ve been on this
The one episode that scared me so bad was Courage the cowardly dog the episode with the slab curse. SERIOUSLY how the hell did they make THAT guy up he is just so creepy
2:31 “get ready to turn that clanker into scrap metal” Captain Rex Star Wars the clone wars movie 2008
I'm surprised I haven't seen any mention in the comments how the TMNT 03 episode on this list is REALLY similar to the plot of The Last Ronin
Finale episodes of Scooby-Doo Mystery Incorporated
@@reedspace8267 yeah
Ron Pearlman was perfect for playing the role of slade. truly terrifying 😮
nah, the episode where the PowerPuff Girls super speed into the future where Him is in control and everything is all dark and gloom cuz they weren't there is much darker than the one about their sister Bunny
still remember reboot ,that episoded was wild
I remember that TT episode...i miss the '03 TT...
TTG just...ruins stuff for me...
"The Amazing World of Gumball."
Example: The Joy
"The students have turned into literal joy zombies, yet the rainbow and creepy eyes don't help either.
The Rival:
Anais was only just a baby, but yet her creepy menacing face always gave us viewers the creeps, and she's even willing to kill HER OWN BROTHERS!
The Fan:
For kids, you might think Sarah just wants to be friends with Gumball and Darwin, but as you grow up to be teenagers, you realize that what she's doing is WAAAY creepier.
The Disaster / Rerun:
Just imagine losing your family and friends right in front of your face, and having it being done by your enemies.
The Wicked:
Mrs. Robinson is evil, plain and simple, but the thing that scared us the most, was the fact that she didn't even help Darwin when he was choking, and yet smiled at him and closed the door on him.
3:27 From @Thomas1Edward2Henry3 20 Best Classic Series Episodes "An Engine is to drop into a vat of molten metal. I dunno about you? but this is the equivalent to a Gas Chamber in a Concentration camp" Thomas the Tank Engine & Freinds is (currently) owned by Mattel Creations
Is it me or when the scene where a train in Thomas N Friends looks like Choo Choo Charles appearance when in the reddish lighting???
That's why I respect the older cartoons - they taught important life lessons about serious topics in understandable ways (for kids), instead of.....dumb fun, waffles and all that shit

It’s a wishful life is also considered one of the worst episodes as well
Even worse than anything from the last seasons?
Since Angelica's parents rarely give her attention,I can see why she's upset.
The one thing I hate about Fairly Oddparents is no matter the wish Timmy makes, big or small, selfish or generous,it has to go wrong in the biggest way possible.
It's like the monkey's paw.
Over the Edge, the Ultimate Enemy, Haunted and Failsafe are my favourites.
0:03 :( Oof...
From "The Dragon Prince" episodes "Heart od Cinder" and "Finnegrin's Wake" were pretty dark.
You can’t beat _The Mask_ episode of _Courage._ Holy shit…
